Valve to port Source engine, games to Linux

This is currently just a rumor, but it's a well founded one: Valve has recently hired a linux programmer, and other games using the Source engine such as Postal 3 have announced they will be available on Linux and Mac OS.

Valve currently already has Linux-based dedicated server distributions for most of their commercial games, with the exception of Garry's Mod, and the tools available for Source Mods to do the same.

I'd be nice with 1 exception: I hope they don't try to push a version of steam for linux, I choose Linux over windows to avoid spyware and spyware-like software and have overall better stability and security, and im not about to ruin it to run Half Life 2 and its episodes.

So they're writing a GL renderer for it then? I guess not that weird, PS3 version must've used one. Moreover that means they could do native Mac ports as well.

Oh, this would be neat. The only real reason I still run Windows is for Team Fortress 2 and other Source games (even though I never really play them, I just miss having them readily available).

The PC version of TF 2 on the Mac? Steam on a Mac? Fuck. I might get an iMac when this shit happens(hopefully real soon).

Misanthrope, they almost certainly will be bringing Steam with it to Linux. How you count Steam as "spyware" is beyond me. Steam up front tells you what it monitors and it's nothing beyond the games. Anything beyond play statistics and antipiracy it'll explicitly ask you about, see: Steam hardware survey.

Wedge, Valve didn't make the OGL port. EA did.

I kinda jumped there. Well, hopefully it becomes more than a possibility.

I'm pretty sure I've already seen someone running TF2 in WINE or a Windows Virtual machine box.

I'm happy to hear this, the games are the only reason why I still have a windows partition. And no I don't want to play under wine...

Yeah, steam aint spyware or anything. As annoying as it can be, when i have no internets or whatever, at least its actually a great service when it works.

And theres no way in hell theyd release anything without Steam. Its their anti-piracy, and its probably the most effective system out there. Other than that their games are all very much worth buying, anyway.

greeneggsnsam: virtualization isn't as fast as natively supported programs. For someone (that someone being me) who has a computer that can run HL2 on Windows, but can barely run Peggle under WINE, this is awesome news.

That's cool (if it's true). I was wondering if any more game publishers were gonna start caring about Linux users.

I might have the wrong impression on steam but its only because what I know did on the initial launch. First of all requiring online activation to offlines games is 100% unacceptable I don't care how "convenient" they claim it is. Case point: Half Life 2 launch was a complete joke and a disaster and some people had to crack their legitimately purchased game to be able to play since steam was pretty much AWOL the first week or so.

Now don't give me that "every game launch is rough" line because this is an offline single player game we are talking about and not being able to play it cause valve says you need steam to authenticate your copy its a joke.

Second at least as launch steam was doing a lot of questionable things like preloading game demos and downloads even if you didn't ask for it and share your bandwidth to their p2p network without even asking. Thats spyware to me.

Now if you guys tell me and offer proof valve has discontinued such abusive practices then thats fine, but I use Linux ( Archlinux to be more specific ) to be in complete control of my system and im not about to release control of for example, my bandwidth, to valve if they don't disclose that they will be using my bandwidth. Thats as good as spyware to me and I don't are if they are not doing it right now, to me "once a cheater always a cheater" and I'll never install steam at all.

If they offer an installer that doesn't requires steam on Linux then I might consider it, but otherwise no.

tsunamikitsune took the words right out of my mouth. There are only a few Windows-only applications remaining (of which Steam is the most important) on my system that keep Windows as my primary boot.
