Hey guys, let me start with this - I OWN a PS3.. Yes. I caved. I got mine early too! Remember, back when they were impossible to find! /sarcasm
Anyways, I picked it up and no longer than a month, the price had shot down $100. That made me bitter to begin with. But I was one of about 1000 people who suffered, so I pulled my pants up and dealt. But CNET wants to say the PS3 is on life support right now, and Gabe Newell just said the PS3 is garbage.
It's funny, I have a wealth of gamer friends/people I know, and the only person I can think of who bought a PS3 was the CIO of the European arm of a massive (massive) multinational corporation. Everyone else has a Wii, 360, PC, or some combination of those. The only thing PS3 has going for it right now is the brand name. It's the typical Sony idiocy of entering a market which is perfect happy with its established format, and trying to sell everyone proprietary bullshit. My PS2 has pride of place next to my monitor, alongside my 360. If the PS3 every becomes anything but an embarrassment, I might consider one. But the way things are going? No chance.
I've been using mine is a BluRay player as well. I'm actually thinking of putting linux on it and playing with that. Until MGS4 comes out I think my 360 will be seeing more game time.
I don't know what everyone is complaining about. Perhaps it's because you'd rather be playing your 360. I don't have a 360 so I don't know what that's like, but I play my PS3 and I enjoy the hell out of it almost on a daily basis. WarHawk is a quality online title, and Heavenly Sword is spectacular and is taking me longer to finish than it took some Destructoid people to finish Bioshock and Halo 3 combined.
I honestly don't know what it is that people are complaining about.
As far as Gabe goes. He states that investing time into milking SPEs of their power is a waste of time and then goes on to say that multicore is the way everything is going and that software developers have to put in some extra work to get things (like Cell) to work. I would definitely agree that the PS3 isn't perfect, but like the PS2 it is hard to program for, but there is a lot of power under there. I wish they could have done better than the RSX but what's done is done. I'm having fun though. And, in the end that's what counts. I also enjoy playing with my Wii, and I'm looking forward to Galaxy and SSBB along with Ratchet and Clank on the PS3.
If the games don't appeal to you then sell it, like the guy who sold me mine. To each their own.
Bhiveknows what he's talking about, of course, this is coming from someone who's been labeled a sony fanboy, so I suppose I'm bound to jump onto anyone who doesn't label the PS3 as a big pile of bullshit and chips
You're not making a valid comparison brainderailment - use iPod gens instead.
Also, I am a gameswhore.. I love them to death, and collect compulsively. So my PS3 is going nowhere, though I doubt I'll pick it up to use much before I get a DualShock 3. I just enjoy force feedback in my games.. Gabe's point that I didnt have time to go indepth and post in the article about, that I see what he's saying, is developing for the Cell. The technology is new, and might only last the lifetime of the PS3. It hasn't been adopted much with respect to commercial PC's. It's in short, harder to devote time knowing and programming for the architecture, and try to port for. 360/PC compiling is so easy to go back and fourth for them, they can develop on those two platforms simultaneously and release the game on two platforms much quicker. Minimizing time, Maximizing productivity and profits.. It's all about development costs. Too much time would have been needed for his team to work on the PS3 version, so they gave it away to EA. I hope that all versions play the same, but my money says it'll feel better on 360 or PC.
Anyways - whoops, I'm not THAT pissed about losing out on the 100$ - it would just be nice to see Sony treat its customers better.. Apple gave rebates after they reduced the price on a product quickly after launch, Sony's approach is so Arrogant. Pay what WE want, for what WE tell you - YOU want. The 360 is no different, I ranted about getting screwed to Major Nelsons blog. The Live gold subscribers who pay for a year, never get free time on Live, because we have to wait so long to cash in on our 30 day free cards, etc.. An XBL Arcade game for continued subscriptions of Gold would be nice..
But anyways, the PS3 came out, and has dropped price almost - and probably will be - 2 times before Christmas. They haven't released or announced PS4 so why would your argument about cars make sense? That is surely not a good sign as they more than likely have not started to make money on the hardware. Making developers pay licensing on Blu Ray discs is not good. Making them learn a new architecture that won't come in handy when they develop a port (to PC, or 360 or Wii - more straight forward coding platforms) is not good. And the current position (3rd) in the next gen wars, is also not good. The situation looks a bit grave for now, but you can certainly not count them out yet.
I see your point about the compiling for PC/360. That would significantly lower production costs for those two individual systems. But, that doesn't help them transcode to the Wii or DS or PSP or PS3. I guess Gabe should just stick with MS. That way he can develop a game that can be bought and played on at least two systems.
He's right about the Wii though. A lot of 3rd party developers are scrambling to get games on the Wii. There's only going to be more of that mass exodus in the near future.
I bought my 60GB PS3 right before the Price Drop too. I own 22 titles as of right now.
( Folklore came today ! ) I'm satisfied w/my descision to go w/Sony...
I passed two heartfelt chances to own the 360 but couldn't make the move/ Mainly because of all the RROD madness.
I say too if your going to own a Multi-Platform game. Why not Sony's version instead of the 360 iteration. I mean you paid the $$$$$$. Now invest in that investment.
I also have 8 PS3 Games PreOrdered as of right now till the end of the year. It's early in it's life & best yet FREE online play. Invest or not to; is the ? ......
Yeah, but the games aren't looking or playing better on PS3!! Sports games are running at 30FPS, and if its released on both systems - I choose the 360 version for the Gamerpoints/achievements, Xbox Live Multiplayer - and the force feedback. That may just be a matter of preference to some, but I like smoother frame rates, and you cant beat the achievement system! It really makes it worth while to pick up the game, when you have a few milestones left to accomplish
@BS3 Owner
22 titles?!?! I bought the PS3 about the same time as you and I own 3, resistance, motorstorm, and Heavenly Sword. I know I've been buying multi-platform games on my 360 but even counting those I don't think the PS3 has 22 games worth buying yet. Do any of your games start with Genji or Gundam or Lair?
Gotta agree that I'm not seeing much for my PS3. It does have some good games on it, Resistance, Lair, Warhawk, Motorstorm, and to some extent Heavenly Sword. (one of those was a joke, can you figure it out?). I guess I don't have any games for it because I'm in the same boat as JesusXP. I just prefer the 360 so all multilpatform games I buy are for 360. I've bought more PS2 games than PS3 games! I'm looking forward to Ratchet & Clank, it will finally be my second game.
I'm no PS3 hater, but there just hasn't been many exclusives I'm interested in yet, and I can't say I'm in love with Sony.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
