Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Wait, what?
I enjoy being able to get my hands on guides and stuff earlier than usual if I need them and I appreciate having a number of reviews to fall back on, including IGN, GameSpot, Destructoid, and Penny Arcade (although I realize they don't really review things in the traditional sense). That way I can read a wider variety of opinions instead of relying on one sole source.
I actually find myself visiting IGN more for the Movie, DVD, Gear, and Comic channels more so than the video game related ones. Whether or not that is worth my monies I'm not sure of yet.
I don't, however, utilize their commenting system or really keep anything up to date on there. Destructoid has become my blogging and community site for those such purposes. I simply like you people more and enjoy the comradery that is much more evident here.
You actually pay for a membership???? That shocks the hell out of me, I have known no one who has done such a thing, now I know one.
I do visit IGN more for the DVD, Movie, and Gear sections like you do. I forgot to mention that.
Money talks
So nothing surprises me when I see a couple of reviews being biased or payed for.
but to their defense... they do have the chobot on their arsenal... I think thats how they survive all the medieval times. She just flashes teh angry mob and everything is back to normal.
I go to IGN often for reviews, but that's not the only site I read.
I rely on making my own opinions for the games I play. Random people on the internet will never convince me to think differently. Sadly, this is not the case for many gamers and I congratulate them on being tools.
I'm happy with IGN, I love Destructoid but I'm not going to jump on the hate bandwagon just because of one minor issue.
and who isn't dependent on advertisers? Crunshii said it right, money talks. there's no difference there between IGN or any other site in that regard. i need to get real arguments instead of "ign = fail". if you look at it from that direction, this discussion = fail. because i never here any constructive critiques against ign. just badmouthing. come on people, you're smarter than this
my trusted review sources:
1. Edge
2. 1Up
3. EGM
4. GFW
5. IGN
I don't know about Edge or GFW but I definitely disagree with you on 1UP and EGM. I find both of their reviews to be poorly written and generally way off base.
so what, you disagree with everything on that list except ign? 1up can be totally smug sometimes and far up their own asses though, and not very well written (compared to edge)... but they seem to be on par with my opinions.
My mispell gets 1 1/2 fire trucks.
I dunno.. I had to vent. A lot of sites really do suck for reviews, me and my friend were discussing this and proposing ideas for our own, but I'm a pretty lazy guy.. so it more than likely won't happen.
Either way.. I can't figure out why IGN remains the powerhouse in gaming related news sites that it still is... I guess majorities are still as dumb as they've ever been..
Why does stupidity spread faster than intelligence?
I want some candians. They sound tasty.
@Jesus
Because it's easier to blindly flail out then it is to research.

Well said my man. Pretty soon hating on reviews will be the cool thing to do on the internet, just like saying Shadow of the Colossus is the BEST.GAME.EVAR or Zach and Wiki is SOOOOOOO GOOD. YOU MUST BUY IT!!!!1111!!!!!OMG
Bet on it.
(sorry, had to do it)
but there's just too much ign bashing here that holds no ground whatsoever. i appreciate your somewhat founded answer as to why ign sucks (that they're stupid, apparently), but it just seems unfair. to me, this sounds like the sites you don't like are the ones disagreeing with your own preconceptions about certain games.
We do not hand out "10" willy-nilly (just look at Matt C’s 9.7 score for Super Mario Galaxy. Easily one of the best Wii games to date. A possible Game of the Year win. But still not a "10").
Games are judged by certain criteria based upon game play, graphics, storyline, construction, etc... Not hype (ala: Assassin's Creed).
We do not rush through games in order to have the first review posted, we do not pander to what is popular. If we think something sucks, we tell you so, along with an explination as to why we made the decision we did. From that point, you have the option to agree or disagree and spend your money accordingly.
Obviously, none of these scored/write-ups are carved in stone. Plus, like all reviews, I'm sure a certain amount of unintentional bias (whether positive or negative) comes into play. Nothing is infallible.
However, be very aware that almost everyone at IGN struggles to give you the best reviews, discussions and scores on the games you're interested in so that you can make an educated decision on what to or what not to spend your hard-earned money on.
P.S: Zack and Wiki is a surprisingly fun and challenging game from Capcom and Shadow of the Colossus is another amazing title. If you think otherwise, you're an idiot and don't know your games.
Thanks for proving my point! =)
but you're alright, dude
Like I said... PORTED reviews and previews. This is a big site. Each section should have its own editors, and own completely different preview/review. Alot of this is rehashed shit - telling you its for the PS3, with blatent Xbox360 references within the body.. It's a horribly broken site, a majority and I'm just venting about the brokenness/corruption in gaming publications.. Check out Gamespot.. this is even pretty weak..
http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=22749
They claim the PS3 has better framerate and xbox boasts better contrast..? Thats weak.. thats really weak for an attempt to display differences within each game. Even the IGN review claimed ps3 suffered massive framerate issues. Almost every game that is on both systems has the same complaint. Gamespot has since started going the way of IGN the past few years..

but, yeah, i don't agree and blablabla. because i don't have the same experience as you, it seems. i've not noticed any ported reviews or bias reporting there. i gotta spend more time there. but i do agree that the subscription thing is stupid.

You're welcome >_<
Gah!
I don't quite understand my hate of IGN and Gamestop. There is just something about them that infuriates me.
I recently renewed my Insider subscription for the second time, this time for two years (a total of four, for those of you who can’t be bothered to do the math). You can’t discount an entire site just because of their reviews; obviously, everyone (on any gaming site) tries to be unbiased, but reviews are inherently subjective — one man’s 9.4 is another man’s 4.0. I like their Insider-exclusive content (the HD videos alone are great), and the columns on Insider are always well written, too.
Also, like B-Radicate, I spend just as much time (if not more time) on the non-gaming channels (Movies, TV, DVD, Gear, etc.) as I do on the game-related channels, and there’s a lot of fantastic content on those parts of the site. I just think it’s fashionable to hate on IGN, especially because we’re here at Destructoid, which, as an independent company, is the polar opposite of IGN (or, as many people call it, “The Man”), with its News Corporation ownership and industry connections. It’s like with the console wars...I say: to each his/her own.
"Industry connection"
Despite being "IGN: The Corporate A-hole" we still struggle to get exclusives, proper coverage, etc...
Any industry connections we have we established with hard work and ethics. Remember, IGN and a good chunk of it's staff have been around for a LONG time and have survived many ups and downs (primarily the ".com" bust a while back).
It would be unfair to the people that work here till after dark every evening and on the weekends to chuck our connections and largess on nothing more than FIM ownership.
