Do people still go to IGN for reviews?
JesusXP | 11:36 AM on 11.14.2007 50 comments

Honestly.. There probably has not been a more crooked gaming site on 'teh internets'. Each channel maintains a high bias. Reviews are often "ported" between systems. Terribly inaccurate with respect to information they present. Extremely poor content, lack of updates, membership fees/widespread advertising..

I dunno.. I just had to throw it out there. I read the Assassins Creed news on the first page, and it really doesn't surprise me all that much. IGN is heavily driven by the companies behind its advertising. The reviewers are almost certainly paid off for the high profile game reviews. The scoring/grading is ridiculous.. I'm pretty sure the only consistency in IGN's reporting is that its all Garbage.. always.

I don't know, personally I haven't looked at IGN for a review on a game since IGN64 & thereafter the v2.0 revision of the site. After that, the commercialism was way to evident to continue reading the site convincing myself they were unbiased and open minded.

They suck!.. (And Joystiq has too - since its acquisition from Time Warner/AOL)

I go there to laugh at the reviews, and then scroll down to the ass hats who pay to read "exclusive content" and laugh at their complaints about the reviews (and the comment spam). IGN is a dead whore.

I check them out but I don't really take anyone's reviews seriously except my own. I listen, read, watch reviews but most of the time they don't sway my judgment of a game that I already know I want. Except of course if they say a game is down right broken out the box.

I Went to IGN for the first time 7 months ago, and was disgusted at how incredibly stupid it was. The sad thing is, this dumbass kid I know claims it's the best videogame website.

I must admit that for all my disdain of the site, I still pay for a membership. I've been a paying subscriber for a number of years now.

I enjoy being able to get my hands on guides and stuff earlier than usual if I need them and I appreciate having a number of reviews to fall back on, including IGN, GameSpot, Destructoid, and Penny Arcade (although I realize they don't really review things in the traditional sense). That way I can read a wider variety of opinions instead of relying on one sole source.

I actually find myself visiting IGN more for the Movie, DVD, Gear, and Comic channels more so than the video game related ones. Whether or not that is worth my monies I'm not sure of yet.

I don't, however, utilize their commenting system or really keep anything up to date on there. Destructoid has become my blogging and community site for those such purposes. I simply like you people more and enjoy the comradery that is much more evident here.

You actually pay for a membership???? That shocks the hell out of me, I have known no one who has done such a thing, now I know one.

I do visit IGN more for the DVD, Movie, and Gear sections like you do. I forgot to mention that.

Well hey, if M$ offers you 1million to say their game is good, as a company hard to say no to that when everyone is struggling to survive, same applies to gaming companies such as all those exclusive games PS3 had now either went multi or actually left them. Same applies to Fox news, Cnn, ect ect.

Money talks

So nothing surprises me when I see a couple of reviews being biased or payed for.

but to their defense... they do have the chobot on their arsenal... I think thats how they survive all the medieval times. She just flashes teh angry mob and everything is back to normal.

I only use Gametrailers to gauge whether or not the game looks fun or not. Their reviews are perfect for viewing the games ups and downs.

I rely on making my own opinions for the games I play. Random people on the internet will never convince me to think differently. Sadly, this is not the case for many gamers and I congratulate them on being tools.

I still think IGN is the best major review site but I mainly only read the Wii review section. I think their editors are great. Far better than 1UP that completely underrates most great games then gives giant scores for over-hyped trash. GameSpot does the same thing as 1UP but isn't as abrasive while they do it.

I'm happy with IGN, I love Destructoid but I'm not going to jump on the hate bandwagon just because of one minor issue.

why is this the common consensus here? i like ign, i don't think they're stupid. what am i missing? perhaps i'm fail...

and who isn't dependent on advertisers? Crunshii said it right, money talks. there's no difference there between IGN or any other site in that regard. i need to get real arguments instead of "ign = fail". if you look at it from that direction, this discussion = fail. because i never here any constructive critiques against ign. just badmouthing. come on people, you're smarter than this

my trusted review sources:
1. Edge
2. 1Up
3. EGM
4. GFW
5. IGN

xper: It's just cool to hate IGN. I think they're a great site. I didn't used to like them but I think they're much better now than they used to be.

I don't know about Edge or GFW but I definitely disagree with you on 1UP and EGM. I find both of their reviews to be poorly written and generally way off base.

so what, you disagree with everything on that list except ign? 1up can be totally smug sometimes and far up their own asses though, and not very well written (compared to edge)... but they seem to be on par with my opinions.

yeah, obviously reviews are personal opinion, but it the line is crossed too much over some publications.. I can't believe the IGN podcasts either.. these guys must spend LESS time researching actual game information then the asshats who work at EB/Gamestop... They know so very little about what actually goes into developing a game, it makes for an extremely sad review.

I dunno.. I had to vent. A lot of sites really do suck for reviews, me and my friend were discussing this and proposing ideas for our own, but I'm a pretty lazy guy.. so it more than likely won't happen.

Either way.. I can't figure out why IGN remains the powerhouse in gaming related news sites that it still is... I guess majorities are still as dumb as they've ever been..

Why does stupidity spread faster than intelligence?

WTF!? how can you say stuff like that JesusXP? you just answered your own stupid question about stupidity. sorry, sorry... we need to keep this is a civilized level. i'm turning into a fanboy here, defending an obvious broken system.

but there's just too much ign bashing here that holds no ground whatsoever. i appreciate your somewhat founded answer as to why ign sucks (that they're stupid, apparently), but it just seems unfair. to me, this sounds like the sites you don't like are the ones disagreeing with your own preconceptions about certain games.

I can personally attest that the IGN editors that do the reviews try to give the most fair review possible.

We do not hand out "10" willy-nilly (just look at Matt C’s 9.7 score for Super Mario Galaxy. Easily one of the best Wii games to date. A possible Game of the Year win. But still not a "10").

Games are judged by certain criteria based upon game play, graphics, storyline, construction, etc... Not hype (ala: Assassin's Creed).

We do not rush through games in order to have the first review posted, we do not pander to what is popular. If we think something sucks, we tell you so, along with an explination as to why we made the decision we did. From that point, you have the option to agree or disagree and spend your money accordingly.

Obviously, none of these scored/write-ups are carved in stone. Plus, like all reviews, I'm sure a certain amount of unintentional bias (whether positive or negative) comes into play. Nothing is infallible.

However, be very aware that almost everyone at IGN struggles to give you the best reviews, discussions and scores on the games you're interested in so that you can make an educated decision on what to or what not to spend your hard-earned money on.

P.S: Zack and Wiki is a surprisingly fun and challenging game from Capcom and Shadow of the Colossus is another amazing title. If you think otherwise, you're an idiot and don't know your games.

ZOMG, what the fuck have I missed? Just go to fucking Metacritic and check the overall consensus. It usually works for me. From there, you can check out all the different scores. IGN scores many games higher than other people, but not always.

xper.. I would love to start goin at it, as to reasons why I dislike IGN. Numero deuce would be the "paid" content portion, and thirdly would be its ad supported, rarely updated, extremely bias main page for non-subscribers, but heavily third is the preview/review rating systems..but I have tons of work to do.

Like I said... PORTED reviews and previews. This is a big site. Each section should have its own editors, and own completely different preview/review. Alot of this is rehashed shit - telling you its for the PS3, with blatent Xbox360 references within the body.. It's a horribly broken site, a majority and I'm just venting about the brokenness/corruption in gaming publications.. Check out Gamespot.. this is even pretty weak..

http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=22749

They claim the PS3 has better framerate and xbox boasts better contrast..? Thats weak.. thats really weak for an attempt to display differences within each game. Even the IGN review claimed ps3 suffered massive framerate issues. Almost every game that is on both systems has the same complaint. Gamespot has since started going the way of IGN the past few years..

I have to say I trust EGM but their reviews have become very lacking as of late. They sound more like a group of people bickering with one another over whether a game is good or not.
I don't quite understand my hate of IGN and Gamestop. There is just something about them that infuriates me.

@Jess (if I may call you that): Ah, but it isn’t quite HTML; it’s BBCode! Still, I agree that it’s annoying how you have to use separate sets of formatting tags if there are line breaks in your comment. And yeah, Zack and Wiki and Shadow of the Colossus are two awesome games.

I recently renewed my Insider subscription for the second time, this time for two years (a total of four, for those of you who can’t be bothered to do the math). You can’t discount an entire site just because of their reviews; obviously, everyone (on any gaming site) tries to be unbiased, but reviews are inherently subjective — one man’s 9.4 is another man’s 4.0. I like their Insider-exclusive content (the HD videos alone are great), and the columns on Insider are always well written, too.

Also, like B-Radicate, I spend just as much time (if not more time) on the non-gaming channels (Movies, TV, DVD, Gear, etc.) as I do on the game-related channels, and there’s a lot of fantastic content on those parts of the site. I just think it’s fashionable to hate on IGN, especially because we’re here at Destructoid, which, as an independent company, is the polar opposite of IGN (or, as many people call it, “The Man”), with its News Corporation ownership and industry connections. It’s like with the console wars...I say: to each his/her own.

hahahahahahahaha!

"Industry connection"

Despite being "IGN: The Corporate A-hole" we still struggle to get exclusives, proper coverage, etc...

Any industry connections we have we established with hard work and ethics. Remember, IGN and a good chunk of it's staff have been around for a LONG time and have survived many ups and downs (primarily the ".com" bust a while back).

It would be unfair to the people that work here till after dark every evening and on the weekends to chuck our connections and largess on nothing more than FIM ownership.

You misinterpreted me (or maybe I wasn’t clear). I hate not being able to convey sarcasm over the internet; I’m one of the few people (even rarer among Destructoid readers) who don’t buy into the whole “IGN is The Man and because Rupert Murdoch owns News Corp. — which owns FOX, of which Fox Interactive Media is a division, of which IGN is a part — IGN employees are corporate shills and automatically get the first scoop on everything” tripe. I’m sure you guys do work very hard over there; it comes off in the immense amount of content on the site, and its longevity is a testament to its quality and massive readership. I’ve been visiting IGN since the days where there was a psx.ign.com, and I still spend a good portion of my internet time there for a reason.
