I don't know. In my opinion, I think he's a decent director, but I also think he's a tad overrated.

I'm actually kinda glad they're going with a different director for The Hobbit, since the book had such a different tone from LotR. It'll be nice to see the same world through another director's eye. I've enjoyed pretty much everything Del Toro has done (even Mimic, which was unfortunately dragged down by lousy casting and studio interference).
Del Toro did a great job with Pan's Labyrinth, so I think he could do a good Hobbit film.
