Games You Borrowed and Never Returned

After a long day of air travel (with the actual flight being the shortest component, damn shuttles), I took a shower to unwind. To try and distract myself from the new mystery substance rotting in the shower corner (pretty sure it's caulk), I thought about this blog and how I need to branch out thematically. Thus, I present to you...

The Great Mem'ries of Games I Did Not Purchase (or Pirate)

I was behind the Zelda curve. Up until OoT, my exposure had been limited to renting a Link to the Past, playing the prior renter's save game (how great was that as a kid?) for 20 minutes, and then giving up. That game was too damn hard and slow for a first grader, especially one that owned Final Fight. I did, however, tell one of my classmates that I had beaten the game. It turns out his parents played the game more than he did and I had to answer a bunch of gameplay questions from them during a field trip. I don't remember what I said, but my "tips" were definitely not useful. That should have taught those parents to get involved in their kid's life. From that point on, I avoided Zelda, lest I have to relive "yeah.. uh... you get the sword... near the tree.. " Years later, after hearing the many great things about OoT, I asked my younger sister to game a neighbor boy into letting us borrow his copy. He had bragged about his skills on the 64, she told me about it, we enjoyed a laugh at his expense, and then we threw down the gauntlet of "you haven't beaten it, I bet we can beat it in two weeks." Two weeks turned into more like a month, but we never gave the game back. I still have his gold cartridge somewhere in my closet. Zelda provided hours of free entertainment for us. We'd print out things from GameFAQs, she'd read them aloud, and I'd play. Sibling bonding at its purest. The first run through, I never played a minute without her.

My sister was also part of my other "theft." I scored a copy of Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES from a friend of mine after a sleepover. He was still basically asleep when my mother picked me up the next morning, so I seized the opportunity and asked if I could borrow the game. Too groggy to object and not enough of a gamer to notice (this was also years after the SNES was released), I kept the game and he forgot. I suck at fighting games, but I was actually pretty decent SFAII. Once again, I had my sister on stand-by with the move list.

Anyone else have any good stories of misappropriated games?

For the few that care, my mom's new PC has been built. Pictures will be forthcoming.

Is it the officially licensed Nintendo version? Those things hold their value surprisingly well. You might be a bigger thief than me if you account for depreciation/scarcity.

Aquaman, FSD, I am shocked that you would take a shower, shocked.
My bro and I, after receiving a second 64 as a gift 'appropriated' a second copy of GoldenEye from a neighbor who shortly thereafter moved away. Still has that kid's name on it in permanent marker. I think we snagged a copy of FF VIII from the same kid after I sold mine.
Odd, those are two games I plan to discuss... maybe kleptomania and gaming are related?
Our balding friend was my second set of eyes when I was playing God of War, but my brother and I were always playing against each other. Wish he had helped me with MGS2, which I never finished.

Damn you! Damn you! I wrote about the reverse of this in my blog a few weeks back. I've lost too many games this way. I'm the sucker, I guess.

The only game that I have yet to return, and never will, is Lunar for the Sega CD. He got my copy of Vay, and we lost touch. Fair enough trade, though yeah, I got the better end of the deal.

@JanesOn

Its Prima's Official Guide if I remember correctly.

It wasn't even my friend's copy either. It was his co-workers.

@alaxender, sounds like your exchange student story is a cover for importing chinese bootlegs.

I just dug my NES out of my parents' basement, and somehow now possess TMNT II and Metroid, but am missing the SMB / Duck Hunt cart. I can only assume this was the result of some horribly lopsided 2-for-2 temporary game swap that was never completed. Sucker.

My brother borrowed a friend's copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and never returned it. I guess he never wanted it back considering what a shit game it was. Unfortunately, I had to buy another copy of Shadow of the Colossus because a friend of mine borrowed it, then eventually moved away while it was still in his possession along with Zone of Enders and a DVD. I've lost a book and a CD that way too...

Sonic 2 but this was like in 2002 so I don't think the guy really misses it. But I lent Super Metroid out to a friend last summer and I still have to get it back from him which I plan on doing.

My friend let somebody borrow his PS2 and all but one of the games.

The person moved away and took his PS2. My Friend gave me his last game and went to buy a used Xbox.

Dr. Mario for the Gameboy
Pre-order Wind Waker disk with original Zelda games.
This isn't really the same, but I found a Mario Kart Double Dash disk (no case) outside my friend's house that suprisingly worked.
