What if I've finally turned into what they've always said I would turn into? A maniac. A psycho killer. A guy who enjoys quoting Sin City.

In a brief description, I play all genres of games. My personal favorites are and always will be platformers and shoot 'em ups. Galaga is probably the first shoot 'em up I have ever played and still manages to hold my attention to this day. Platformers, jeez, far too many for me to name. There are a few FPSs I like, but only if they manage to be different enough from the rest. I have my fair share of fun with other genres as well. Except fighters, I tend to be pretty bad at those but it still doesn't put a hamper on the amount of fun I can get from them.

I was born in 1990, my first video game system was a Sega Genesis and it was probably the best thing I had ever had the chance to play. As the years went, as did my interest in the video games field. Parents and relatives usually got me game consoles for birthday and christmas gift, you wouldn't believe how excited I was when I got my first SNES. My older brother and I did all we could to pool money together to buy GameBoys (Possibly a GameGear at some point as well) and eventually the Playstation 1 and 2. I can safely say that I have interacted with every Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Microsoft, and a few Atari consoles and handhelds at least once. As of now, I still play games as often as I can, despite my game library has not been expansive as it once was when I was in my "prime." Since GameFly and various other rental places popped up, I have still been able to keep playing to my heart's content.

As of now, college usually eats up some days. Whenever I'm not doing college activities, I am improving my drawing abilities, watching movies, expanding my musical tastes both new and old, partying with friends, eating cultural food and, of course, playing games.

And I am a sucker for just about anything film noir, enough so that I occasionally write in that style. Rad stuff.

Video Game Box Art Needs to Do Less Soul Staring
Jack Maverick | 3:18 PM on 04.11.2009 11 comments

I always get an uncomfortable feeling when I decide I want to walk down the video game aisle and see if there are any news games that have been released recently. One reason why that is is that I always get this feeling that the employees are stalking me and feel the urge to ask me weird stuff while I'm browsing. But the main reason is because I really dislike having box art staring back at me with a manacing look, and this becomes worse when around half of the library being sold seems to have this menacing look.

Of course, video games have a lot of ways of making a good first impression if you just look at them. This is where cover art really matters because it can either make or break a game if you know absolutely nothing about it. If the box art shows the main character performing some kind of action, it will raise interest. If it shows a serene setting with the main character looking at it, it will raise curiosity. If it shows nothing but a close up of a character's face, it tells nothing other than the box art people had nothing better to do than mess around with the zoom function of their computers.

Take Killzone 2 for example. The close-up of the Helghast soldier is, although pretty awesome since those guys are cooler than the ISA, rather unorthodox. It tells nothing about the game except that the Helghast have red glowing goggle things and enjoy staring menacingly at other people. On the other hand, there's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Despite the fact that the dude on that is still staring at me with a grimace look and would kill me without a second though, it's still better because it still tells you what the hell this game is about since it has a cool background and guns. Okay, it's not the best box art but it tells you what you're going to be finding in the game.

What goes through box art designer's mind when they decide to go against making something interesting that tells you what the game is about or making an enchanting background to entice us, then they go "Here, have a closeup on a main character/NPC's face?" It's like they want us to research what the game is about before we buy it...or they're against their company and want the game to scare people, I'll never know. Also, if you have a weird looking character like Faith from Mirror's Edge and you decide to post a pretty large closeup of her, that probably isn't good. I've read many posts about how people didn't buy the game because the box art was so appalling and if they did buy it, they did it with the box art facing down on the counter because they were so ashamed. Actually, I'm pretty sure they were trolling but the game still suffered mediocre sales so that's all I have to go on.

Oh, and regarding MGS4, CGI closeup Snake? It's bad.

The MGS4 boxart pissed me off so hard. I think that's half the reason I got the special edition with the badass traditional MGS art on the outside of the whole deal.

L4D is the only subtle box art I have in my 360 collection.
The rest are in your face faces.

Maybe Fear2's box is alright though.

I'm pretty sure thats sarcasm, but L4D boxart is more unsettling than anything I've seen.

But where would all the BADASS appeal go to? Not that we require it that much anyway.
