Ten things you don't know about the guy behind the name Jack Maverick
Jack Maverick | 6:31 PM on 07.25.2009 17 comments

lol unoriginal idea for a blog

I'm actually pretty surprised that I have held back from doing this blog for so long, perhaps because trying to think up ten of the most interesting things about me seemed like a difficult thing for me to do. I feel a little late for this party, but I feel like I should get one of these things in before I forget.

1) Jack Maverick is actually the name of a detective I came up with during my last year of high school, because we had to do this thing in a class where we were asked about what careers we had planned on doing. I had plans on becoming a comic book/manga artist by the time of graduation, and I had the urge to come up with an original character. Then that name came up when I was thinking about the TV series 24 and the plot of MegaMan X.

It was a dumb name, but I loved how cheesy it was, so I held on to the name to use in various sites. Then laziness factored into my life, and the guy still has yet to see the light of day. I may have plans on doing something with him hopefully.

2) I always have to know what the time is. I can't even leave the house unless I have a watch on me. There's at least one clock set up in every room of my house. My bed has three alarm clocks on it. Time is serious business with me.

3) I'm a clean freak when it comes to my gaming systems. I spent countless hours making sure my controllers are free of sweat and dead skin particles before I feel like playing with them again. You can only imagine how much of a nightmare it is for me when I go to a friend's house and I play games there. The grease...ugh.

4) Music changed my perception on life when I was younger. I never wanted to interact with anyone during my gradeschool years. It changed when my family bought this old and huge radio, and we turned the thing on. I was immediately entranced in the music, I was in love with the way the stories were told melodically, etc, I didn't think the world was terrible anymore. My love for music has grown since then.

5) I did some pretty dangerous stuff during that same age. I remember doing a lot, but the only one that comes to mind was when my older brother and I were playing with our mother in this hair salon she owned at the time, and she was trying to seek us. There were two conveniently-placed air vents in the ground, which I didn't want to go into, but my brother kept tempting me to do it. We jump into the vents and hide there for a while

Then I hear this creaking coming out of nowhere, which I thought nothing about, until two minutes later. The vent pops open, I fall about ten feet onto a pile of wood, and it was completely black. Imagine how terrified my eight-year-old mind was at the time. They do find me, and I've had some big back problems for a month following that. This is also a possible cause of my current fear of darkness.

6) I'm a lover of all things film noir. The style, the acting, the way that there's usually a gruff voice saying a cool line while something interesting is happening onscreen, it's all good.

7) I think Zak MacKracken and The Alien Mindbenders is the best point and click adventure game ever made. I also think this because it's the only point and click adventure game I ever played. I still lack an urge to remedy this situation.

8) I would make a terrible fireman because I love watching things burn more. I'm a cruel man. :(

9) I have no child skills. By that, I mean since I never grew up with younger siblings, I don't know ways to effectively communicate with them. When I talk to one and they insist on yelling back, I'm lost since I don't know what to do.

10) I'm literally like a bug. I'm always drawn in to stuff with an obnoxious amount of blinking lights on it. It's why arcades are one of my favorite places to hang out.

Wow, no wonder I held back on doing this thing for so long, I feel like a nut after reading this over. Oh well, at least I'll have my clocks to keep me company so I don't feel so insane.

I think that Jack Maverick is a pretty badass name for a detective.

Seeing that you haven' played other point-n-click adventures and love noir stuff, play both Hotel Dusk Room 215 and Grim Fandango. Though GF has a more comedic snap in it.

I am pretty careful with my videogames too, hell I sleep right ext to them. Except that my Nintendo64 has a chili spot in it and I haven't cleaned it yet.

...

I'll get the Windex.

Was wondering why you held back on this. I too am a lover film noir and you actually do sound nuts. but just a little :)

Hahaha, your #2 is something I have as well. I used to even sleep with a watch on, and in recent years (with watch bands breaking out my skin or just failing in general), I adapted to using my cell phone as my watch. It works pretty well, when it doesn't die on me. D:

I've probably weaned myself off of time addiction. I mean, how else do I play a game until 3am and realize how late it is? =P

I always thought your name was a clever reference to stealing something from Mel Gibson.

You know, cleaning my controllers and systems would be a good habit. Nothing like the feel of a clean/new controller.

But there's also that special worn in and kinda grimy feel of a well used controller. Just feels right, with the nuances worn down by use and skin-slick. Nasty...but special.

Music is awesome, yes.

Cool blog!

@blehman, I actually did try out using Max to reference Mad Max at one point, but there was something about Jack that I found to be more alluring. Maybe because I found more cool last names to fit with the name, I dunno.

"Jack Maverick" is a great Detective name! LOL

Great blog! It's always fun to find out more about other gamers... and if I'm ever in an online game with you I now know I just have to point out something shiny with blinking lights to distract you while I kill you! :)
(and more online games should have shiny things with blinking lights!!!)

You know that small crease that goes around the edge of the PS3 pad Jack?

I clean that out with my nail every hour :P (not as in on the hour every hour just as in that's how often it needs the stuff taken out of it, probably).

I've always thought Jack maverick was one of the best names on here as well :]

A man with one watch knows what time it is.

A man with two is never sure.

Do you happen to live in the AU by any chance? :D
Jack Maverick's Destructoid Blog
If only, Mag. I have to suffer living in the middle of nowhere (The Midwest in NA) for now. Nothing interesting occursat all in these parts, I wanna get out of here. :(

What if I've finally turned into what they've always said I would turn into? A maniac. A psycho killer. A guy who enjoys quoting Sin City.

In a brief description, I play all genres of games. My personal favorites are and always will be platformers and shoot 'em ups. Galaga is probably the first shoot 'em up I have ever played and it was definitely the longest to hold my attention. Platformers, jeez, far too many for me to name. There are a few FPSs I like, so few that I don't feel like naming any. But if they manage to be different enough, it has my attention. I have my fair share of fun with other genres as well. Except fighters, I tend to be pretty bad at those but it still doesn't put a hamper on the amount of fun I can get from them. Arc System Works is one of the best fighting game developers around. Capcom, SNK, and everyone else is meh.

I was born in 1990, my first video game system was a Sega Genesis and it was probably the best thing I had ever had the chance to play. As the years went, as did my interest in the video games field. Parents and relatives usually got me game consoles for birthday and christmas gift, you wouldn't believe how excited I was when I got my first SNES. My older brother and I did all we could to pool money together to buy GameBoys (Maybe a GameGear as well, dunno) and eventually the Playstation 1 and 2. I can safely say that I have interacted with every Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Microsoft, and a few Atari consoles and handhelds at least once. As of now, I still play games as often as I can, despite my game library has not been expansive as it once was a decade ago. Since GameFly and various other rental places popped up, I have still been able to keep playing to my heart's content.

As of now, college is something else that eats up three to four days of the week. Whenever I'm not doing college activities, I am improving my drawing abilities, watching movies, expanding my musical tastes both new and old, offroading with my friends, eating cultural food and, of course, playing games.

And I am a sucker for just about anything film noir, enough so that I occasionally write in that style. It's fun stuff.
