The first thing that happened when news broke that Treyarch was making the next Call of Duty game and it was going to be set during WWII, was people lost it. "HOW DARE THEY GO BACK TO WORLD WAR TWO!"
I loved Call of Duty 2 and 3 and of course got way into Call of Duty 4. And Now being a part of the Call of Duty World at War beta, I realize I really like WWII as a setting way more than a present day battlefield.
The sights and sounds are just way more atmospheric than a modern day battle. It really takes you back to another time when wars were not fought from hundreds and hundreds of miles away with missiles, they were fought up close and personal.
Modern day may have impressive technical weaponry, but it does not have the unique architecture, vehicles, and all around vintage feel. The sounds of an Artillery strike laying waste to the other side of the map is truly something unmatched by a current day air strike.
I also want to talk about some of the Gameplay. In Modern Combat you have Air Strikes and Helicopters as rewards for kill streaks. In World War 2 there were no Helicopters to be found on the battlefield. Instead you have DOGs, this may not sound very menacing but OMG, you don't realize how fearsome rabid attack dogs truly are until you are being killed over and over again by a bite to the neck. Easily you can take one or two down, but can you take down 3 without them ganging up on you and deal with the enemy team firing at you? Its a fantastic change of pace for the multiplayer component and it works extremely well. Whoever at Treyarch Said "I Know, lets do Dogs!" should get a raise.
Maybe I just have not become over saturated with the setting yet due to having Call of Duty being the only real WWII Series I have played but tonight I learned that I like WWII better than Modern Combat.
I can claim 3 titles as fully instating my love of video games. I don't remember the order that I first played these games but I will try to put them in the order that I think I first played them. These games fully transformed me into the Gamer that I am today
#1 Super Mario Land 2 Six Golden Coins
ignore the lame text in the vid
This is the first Mario game I think I ever played and I must say that it truly was a fantastic game to start on.
The levels are completely different from anything seen in the other Mario games. At the end of each level there is a Bell you have to ring instead of a flag pole. Levels included Space, a haunted graveyard and a giant Mario Robot.
Another Item of note is this was the first ever appearance of Wario. Wario was the villain and he had kicked Mario out of his house and locked the door and the only way Mario could return to defeat him was to collect 6 golden coins that were spread across the world and being held by various bosses.
#2 Kirby's Adventure
I was obsessed with this one. Kirby's Adventure was released right as the NES was on its last breath and is my favorite NES game. Everything about it was amazing; levels, powerups, Enemies, Bosses, everything.
There are seven worlds that Kirby has to progress through to restore the pieces of the Stolen star rod to end the eternal nightmares of the citizens of Dream land. Graphics were amazing for the Nes, but even more incredible is the music. Just listen to the music on the vid and tell me that is not some fantastic video game tunes.
This one is on the Virtual Console for 500 points and I completely recommend it.
#3 Disney's Aladdin
This one is amazing. Disney's Aladdin was released for the Genesis by Virgin interactive and featured an animation style very similar to the Animated film. It also featured music from the film and also music composed by the legendary video game composer Tommy Talarico.
Levels included Agrabah Market, Roof Tops, Cave of Wonders, Inside the Genies lamp, Sultans palace, a Magic Carpet ride, and one of the most exciting side scrolling levels ever, THE ESCAPE FROM THE CAVE! Again note the incredible music throughout this level.
Combat mainly involved Aladdin's Sword but you could also throw Apples and occasionally jump on the backs of Camels and they would spit at the guards. Free lives were gained by collecting golden Aladdin heads amd Continues were bought from the traveling salesman.
This one is easily found in cartridge form for the Genesis and I highly recommend it.
So I am browsing NeoGaf and looking at the Gaming Setups 2008 Thread and seeing lots of posts with Nice TVs and a great selection of Current Gen Games, then I see This:
I play a lot of games on almost every system. I have been a Hardcore gamer since the early 90's. I somehow stumbled on to video games when I discovered my parents original Gameboy and NES. From then on I have been playing and I can honestly say I will probably never stop as long as I live. Most of my time is spent Gaming, exploring the internets, and listening to Video Game Podcasts.
My favorite genres are:
Action Adventure, Shooters, Puzzle, Racing, Platform, Portal, Action RPGs, and Music/Rythm.
I am a Gigantic LOST fan and eagerly await the safe return of the surviving Passengers of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815
