Who wouldn't want DragonBall Z as a movie?
JACK of No Trades | 6:53 AM on 09.04.2007 20 comments

"20th Century Fox has greenlit a US $100 million big screen version. The movie will shoot in Montreal next year, wrapping in July."

I wonder if it will be CGI or will it be starring Samuel Jackson as Picalo, and Hugh Jackman as Goku? Can't wait.

You must be so proud.

Jesus, well, in case this is new to anyone in a younger generation, it goes something like this. The movie studios options your childhood, rapes it, and leaves behind a cold and emotionless shell that has visual similarities to the original, but everything else is wrong. There will be 2 sequels, and each will suck harder than the first.

BTW, Transformers, is and always will be an anomaly. A mistake. It should not have been as good as it was.

Oh, and for the record, I wouldn't. Dragonball has always sucked. FOX waited too long to jump on this, but that's MO.

LOL! I was in middle school when DBZ was a huge hit. You must be an old muthafucka to not like DBZ. It was a great action anime.

Yeah.. I used to like DBZ back in, like, 7th grade.
It was all cool until I realized the format for every season.

Goku: "HAHAHA! I'M THE MOST POWERFUL PERSON IN THE UNIVERSE!!"
Cellfriezabuu the man-burglar: "Nuh-uh!" *smacks Goku*
Goku: "AHHHH! *head asplodes*"
Gohan: "HEY! THATS MY DAD! WAHHHHHHHHHH!" *goes Super-SayanOMG1337*
Vegeta: "ITS OVER 9000!"
Cellfriezabuu the man-burglar:"HAH! YOU CAN'T KILL ME BECAUSE I'M THE MOST POWERFUL PERSON IN THE UNIVERSE! SO WE SHALL DECIDE THIS WITH AN EPIC STARING CONTEST THAT LASTS 15 EPISODES!"

Every episode I've ever seen of DBZ is under 1 minute of action, and about 20 minutes of grunting and/or whining.

This film is gonna flop. Why? Because the Dragonball series is loosely based off of Superman, with chinese tale Journey to the West mixed in. The series are extremely long with a huge cast of characters. There's too much to make a movie out of, and on top of that the original series are very violent in their uncut form and never meant to be a kids series in the first place. Cartoon Network hacked up the series badly.

My favourite scene in DBZ is where Anrdoid 17 rebels and kills Dr Gero, by beating the crap out of him then repeatedly jumping on his head, sending his brains everywhere. Uncut is the only way to enjoy the series properly. Go check it on dvd.

A big screen film though, Transformers was more credible and great, but its gonna be very hard to do DBZ justice well. A live action version has been tried before in japan (and it looked awful).

They'll do nothing of the sort. Anyone that checks out anything on me will get their ass kicked, unless you're a chick, then you can check out anything you like on me.

Aevlad and Droobies nailed the problem on the head with Dragonball.

Besides, aren't there like 40 DBZ movies already?

Do not want. If they are to adapt an anime/manga pick something with a decent, coherent plot and deeper characters. Besides wouldn't the film be 3 hours long with 2 hours of that dedicated to the characters charging up their special attacks? The manga was drawn out over 30 something books and I remember only 1 or 2 of the plot arcs being particularly interesting.

Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing, Last Exile, Mai Hime and perhaps Gunslinger Girl spring to mind to make quite decent movies. Although I wouldn't want them to be touched, live action adaptations always go to shit. I couldn't stand Transformer, I felt it was another travesty.

I was talking about this on the d-toid stickam last night. I cannot believe they're actually doing this. If it was being done in Japan, then MAYBE it would be cool but it's being made by americans and will be hollywood-ified. That will make it suck. However, I will still see it because something this epicly bad MUST be viewed on the big screen. I will take my friends and we will go and point and laugh at the abomination. It's just too bad that the movie can't be nearly as awesome as something like Volcano High (BUY THIS MOVIE! The english version is a good laugh, but the Korean version--on the opposite side of the disc--is where it's at).

(I typed this rant first, but decided to put it at the end :P)
As a kid, I LOVED DBZ despite it's repetitive format. I loved the show all the way until the end of the Cell saga (cuz then things got stupid). I STILL think the show was great. It was the perfect action show for it's time and I'm glad I could watch it. The only thing that trumps DBZ even more is the original series, DragonBall. Now THAT series was original. It wasn't nearly as repetitive and the fights were much cooler because they weren't constantly zipping around. You actually saw their movements and they didn't rely on ki beams nearly as much.

Also, the reason why many DBZ episodes had long pauses and long grunts instead of fighting (and long flashbacks and long power-ups...) was because that was the way to do filler back in the day. Instead of making up stories, the animators decided to do this. They caught up to the DBZ manga really quickly, so the only way they could stall until more story came out was to stall for time. Although they DID do filler stories a few times, this was the main reason for all those long-ass pauses.

Also, the Garlic Jr. Saga was the best saga EVAR. No Goku to help everyone, and it had an AWESOME twist.

Also, Piccolo will be played by Vin Diesel.

Also, ballz.

Bebop already had a decent movie. Angelic, are you telling me you'd prefer Hollywood to take a shit on Cowboy Bebop over this?

HOLLYWOOD!!! Bubbie! How was your schvitz yesterday?!!
Listen, you keep that DBZ movie on track. Anime is a gold mine for movies. Lemme suggest some other titles to get fast tracked.

Sailor Moon, One Piece, and Card Captor Saukra. You make those and nothing else, all else is garbage, baby.

Love ya, see you guys in Vancouver next month for the shoot.
I gotta thing!

This is about five years too late to be relevant. $10 says some girl is now able to go Super Sayin to be politically correct.

@ Cowboy TTop

After Saban lost the series (after they had hacked up through to the middle of the Namek arc), Funimation edited it, not Cartoon Network or Toonami. The last show that Toonami themselves made significant edits to was Tenchi Muyo.
