How Many Of You Idiots Thought Bioshock Sucked?
JACK of No Trades | 10:30 AM on 09.17.2007 47 comments

The game is simply beautiful and revolutionary. I’ve been playing games for over fifteen years and I can tell you that Bioshock is one of the greatest FPS I’ve ever played. The gameplay is outstanding. What blows my mind is that some people thought it sucked. Who in the fuck are these dipshits? The artistic design in the game is phenomenal. How could you not like the game? I don’t like JRPG’s but at least I can see the beauty in Eternal Sonata & Blue Dragon. They reminded me of every other RPG I’ve seen, but I still don’t think they suck.

If you didn’t like Bioshock, maybe you shouldn’t play games again. Your standards are way to fucking high. The ones saying this game sucked are probably fanboys that are jealous, because its no on their console. Bioshock is one of those games that made me feel happy inside. It refreshed my memory on why I love to play games.

Give me some GOOD REASONS why Bioshock wasn’t a good game.

This is where I find most of these dipshits comments.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Anybody who says the game sucked is either a Sony obsessive with a vendetta or somebody being different for the sake of different. If the game wasn't to your tastes, fine, but there is no legitimate reason to say the game is inherently bad. That's why you never get any other argument than "it sukked d00d."

In retrospect, I do think BioShock has become a tad overrated and it didn't fully realize its potential and promise. However, it was still a damn fine game and one that only a stone-hearted rogue could accuse of sucking.

Bioshock was a great game. Who's saying it sucked?

The only complaints that I had were the lack of inventory and an extreme lack of challenge. Other than that, totally stellar game.

I agree with Jim that its only fanboys saying it sucked but there were some let downs like the ending and the AI wasn't as stunning as I wanted it to be. Still it was a brilliant game in almost every aspect adn teh only reason these things are brought up is because the hype was so high for it, otherwise they probably wouldn't have been brought up.

Is that your TV Jack? It makes me cry when I think waht I paly games on.

No one said it didn't look pretty...

The game was FAR from revolutionary though. It is a good shooter, but nothing new is brought to the table. Overhyped...

I hated the hype, not the game. The game was good, but nothing spectacular.

The "choice" system was a little too Molyneux (i.e. Black & White lolol I made a funny) for my tastes as well.

For the game being so heavy on story, the ending sucked balls. That doesn't make the game "sucky" but that was my only disappointment of the game. Other than that it was damn amazing.

Yeah, I too was disappointed in the game. I think I expected it to cure cancer...

Since it didn't cure cancer, it sucks.

I don't think it was overhyped. If you want to see what overhyped is, do a search on Halo 3. The use of plasmids was excellent. (Melt ice to find a new passages). Also, upgrading your weapons was a great addition. Of course some of these additions have been used in previous games, but there hasn't been a game to incorporate them so well.

The game was good, they should've called it System Shock 3.

Incorporating things that has been done before is not revolutionary.

Black incorporated guns really well, FAR from revolutionary.

Snail pretty much hit it on the head for the major complaint I have. It played a lot like a more casual version of System Shock 2. I don’t think that’s a truly bad thing. It just made the mechanics a bit too easy at times.

Bioshock is still a great game (even with random nitpicks) and a personal favorite of mine.

Uhh..... Deus Ex?

I mean, once you play the first Deus Ex, every other shooter of that type (RPG-elements, story characters susceptible to death, multiple ways to tackle obstacles) is kind of lacking...

Trust me on this one, go find a copy of that game and play it. The graphics are pretty awful by today's standards, but it has the gameplay to make up for it in spades.

I played both Dues Ex's. I have The invisible War on PC right now. Its a great games, but not like Bioshock. Bioshock atmosphere and detail put it on another level.

Goldeneye was revolutionary on consoles. I'd say Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were revolutionary. Maybe Quake as well...but NOT BioShock.

Detail and atmosphere has nothing to do with revolutionary. You are comparing graphics/detail to gameplay. Graphics/atmosphere/detail can NEVER be revolutionary. And I sure hope BioShock has more atmosphere and detail put into it than an a couple year old game!

I really liked bioshock, but I have no desire to play though a second time like I did with system shock 2 or deus ex. I do agree that the atmosphere was absolutely fantasic though.

The game was not revolutionary, it looked amazing but it wasn't as good as some people make it out to be. AI was a BIG letdown for me.

I completely agree with you that in terms of atmosphere and detail, Bioshock is arguably flawless. I loved the world of Rapture. It definitely stands out as one of the most iconic worlds ever put into video gaming.

However, in terms of gameplay, it didn't do all that much that was new or even all that interesting. If you strip away the fantastic atmosphere and story, it's a fairly run-of-the-mill FPS.

The world/atmosphere of Rapture really pushes Bioshock out of the realm of mediocrity into its spot among some of the best in history. Which is actually saying quite a lot.

Dude, nice post.
I played through the game all the way through with the lights out, sound on surround, and my big ass tv right up to my face, so from start to finish it was fucking fantastic. I even liked the [1] ending I received.
Although it wasn't a revolutionary shooter, it was tons of fun, and the story and pacing was delicious. /done

What could have been added to the gameplay to make it better? Be able to drive in a sub through Rapture shooting at Sharks and Squid? That would be cool as hell, but it underminds the story. Im just saying, there wasn't much more they could have added to improve gameplay. It was near perfection. Also, its a FPS, what do you expect? Everygame you play these days only has some things added upon the basic genre. The same goes for RPG's.

The AI wasn't that bad. How could you improve it? The NPC run to health stations, to the water when on fire and hides around corners. Bioshock has the best AI yet.

@Jack

I think making the Big Daddies slightly easier, but completely removing Vita Stations would have made the game significantly better. I like to be challenged when I play games, and Bioshock really just had no challenge whatsoever.

Even if that was only in the game as an option, I would have liked it a lot more.

I also found most of the plasmids to be fairly useless. A shotgun blast to the face was almost always more effective than setting someone on fire.

One other thing that came up when I was debating whether or not to play it again was that if I did play it again, how would I play differently? I did basically everything there was to do in the game aside from research every enemy, and that was just on one play through.

My friend and I were discussing the vitachambers and someone said thet they would have been better if you had to pay money to use them. We all aggreed until I pointed out that over the course of the game you come across so much money that if you could carry it all by the end of the game you could fill a giant vault and swim in it like Scrooge McDuck.

Turok games didn't have AI that ran toward water when set on fire. The AI didn't even try to heal itself.

AI that ran towards water when set on fire and tried to heal itself? That doesn't seem like crazy AI intelligence. It sounds more like a command type thing. The code would probably be something like, "when set on fire -- jump in water." Don't ove exaggerate it, yoh.

It was a great game, but the ending was the equivalent of being slapped in the face. Disrepectful. It still deserved a 10 out of 10, though.

Wouldn't that be awesome though? Hey Jack, that's one thing we could add to Bioshock to increase awesomeness. A giant money vault that held all the cash you collected over the course of the game that you could swim around in. I hope someone from 2k is reading this.

Speaking of Turok, remember that awesome death frisbee Predator rip-off thing? Razor wind I think it was called? I still have that cart sitting around, I should give that a whirl. Talk about awesome weaponry.

if you played the past system shock series the story would have been ruined for you..... and if you played gears of war the graphics would not have wowed you.... and if you played half-life 2.... well you must get it by now... Its a well rounded game which does a lot of things well but nothing really 'revolutionary'. Its in essence, just a next gen FPS, meaning it combines elements from past games and brings them together in a neat little package.

Bioshock deserved an 8/10. not a 9.8/10.
There is no reason why this game is supposedly better than Half-life 2, or any other games on the top of the metacritic lists.

I ask you, Jack, how is Bioshock better than Half-Life 2?

O yah, and about the comments on people hating bioshock being sony fanboys, that's completely wrong. I have a few buddies who absolutely hate Bioshock, and they are all die-hard 360 fanboys. I think Bioshock has created it's own cult of fanboys. I am now going to make a blog post about this thought.

The atmosphere & story in Bioshock is leaps and bounds over Half-Life. The only thing that give Half-Life a edge are the vehicles and gravity gun, but the gravity gun ison par with Bioshocks telekenisis. BTW they both use Havoc physics.
