Lately I’ve been playing games a lot more with my comrades on the PSN, who, most of which love to talk trash, especially while I’m present. I do admit that I partake in the joyous festivities, and begin calling people “douches” or “fags” while enjoying a match or two of my favorite games (BLAZBLUE!), but recently I’ve noticed the amount of tension and frustration a constant barrage of insults and name-calling can cause.
During a game that requires your full attention, such as Blazblue or Street Fighter, talking shit could distract you or throw you off and possibly cost you a win. On the other hand some trash talk can be so infuriating it may have an adverse effect, and cause you to explode into a wrecking-ball of fury bound on destroying your opponent; although the “wrecking-ball of fury” part is less than likely, frustration remains constant in both scenarios.
Trash talk and games go hand in hand; in fact, trash talk is in association with nearly anything competitive, but is it welcome? I think it is a very useful tactic in games if used correctly, but sometimes people can, and usually do, get carried away. This normally ruins a great night of gaming for those not as tolerant. I on the one hand have become very hardened through the amount of insults and fun poked at me. I won’t say I haven’t been affected negatively by smack, but a continuous array of personal attacks does get old after a while.
The purpose of this blog isn’t to try and persuade some of us who have a strange illness known as, diarrhea of the mouth, but to merely state my view on the topic. Maybe some of you think that I’m “being a whiney bitch and need to man up.” Well to those of you that think that here’s a big-ass “Go fuck yourself motherfucker.” I hope that doesn’t bode well with you, because you suck ass… My apologies about the “wrecking-ball of fury” showing it’s ugly little head in the previous paragraph, I just needed to vent.
One of the major things that annoys me about trash talk are the people that “dish it” and can’t take any negative criticism themselves. I mean, come on… You can say something about someone’s momma, but you get pissed off when that same person reveals that you secretly love little boys? Honestly, if you can’t take shit, then don’t open your big mouth. Though that’s not the same for someone who fabricates an insult about another person and he/she responds by getting personal.
Personal attacks should be saved for the internet-tough guys that tell you how much you suck after telling them “great game,” not friends. If you want to pick a fight, by all means go for personal insults. Maybe tell your friend how much his lazy-eye disturbs you or how much of a loser he is for still living with his parents. I’d have to be really good friends with a douche like that if he ever uttered something to that degree. Yet, insults like these really aren’t that bad if you’re talking to a person privately, which brings me to my last point.
Trash talk can be an annoyance and sometimes uncalled for, but talking smack in front of friends to make you look like some kind of “big shot” is probably the most childish thing you could do in a competitive game. This is usually demonstrated by talking to your peers as if the person you’re insulting isn’t present; not to be confused with someone making fun of you directly. Trust me guys this makes your e-peen grow a few inches…
Well to conclude this tl;dr blog I’d like to leave you all with a note. Don’t be a dick to your online friends. Remember they’re your friends for a reason, and while smack/trash/shit talk might make a game between good friends more enjoyable, restrain yourself from getting carried away and getting personal especially in front of a group of friends. Trash talk should be a fun and welcome aspect of anyone’s gaming experience not a humiliating, irritating annoyance.
Grow a pair PikeWoman. You pussy ass punk mother fucker lol
trash talking isn't bad. it's the little 5 year old children that annoy me.
I knew someone was going to do it, though I'm glad it was you Jack... You drunk bastard, LOL
Gaming online does tend to expand your vocabulary... and not always in positive ways. I used to watch my language online... simply because I do that old fashioned thing of trying to treat others as I want to be treated... and yeah, when you kill someone and they call you a "fucking bitch" it just seems unsporting and childish. Increasingly though (especially in open mic games) I do notice that a cheap kill will elicit my response of "fucking asshole" instead of my usual exclamation of "crap". It also seems to be slipping into my real life... out of respect I just never used the "fuck" word around my parents but am noticing that I do it all the time now.
Eh... most of my comments tend towards the "good kill" or "That was for your C4 that I ran into earlier" type of comment, but you're right that increasing trash talk can turn a friendly game into more of a competitive game... with those same feelings of frustration and anger. I rarely start anything... but I also find it hard to resist responding to those attention-whore assholes who feel the need to get personal. :(
Perhaps these could be used as placeholders for the ones you're lacking. :)
I'm not quite sure what to make of this...
I have mixed feelings. I enjoy talking shit to my friends and even getting it back. That's not a problem at all for me. (Although when people run thier mouths to sound tough in front of a group of people, that can get annoying)
The biggest problem I have is when people want to whine and belittle what you're doing because they can't beat you. I wrote a long comment about this on someone's blog a few weeks back, but here's the short summary:
According to how most gamers act, NO ONE has ever been beaten fairly in a videogame. They lost because dude was lagging, or because dude was cheap, or a button masher, or picked a N00BZ character, or because thier giant ass boil was distracting them from concentrating on the game.
That shit drives me nuts. It shouldn't, but it does. If you can't come up with a strategy to adapt and overcome what someone is doing, that's your fucking problem. It doesn't mean the other person is a n00b or sucks or is cheap. It means you don't have enough skill as a gamer to adapt to the situation at hand and come out on top.
I love trash talking. I do it all the time. But one thing you will never hear me do is make excuses for a loss, or belittle the skill of the person that just beat me. If I lose, it's because I wasn't good enough. Plain and simple. Not because the other dude was cheating or some other lame excuse I could make up to try to make myself feel better about just getting my ass handed to me in front of my friends.
Anyway that's all.
@Moose
Thats what happens when you play fighting games. People are competitive. They don't like to lose. It shouldn't piss you off to the point of crying.
@Elsa: I completely understand where you're coming from. I've been trying to cool down my language myself for the same reasons. It's like every time my parents critique my lifestyle or anything really, my foul mouth goes off. Conversations like that are usually followed by awkward silence and me having to apologize.
@Y0j1mb0: Oh don't worry I've got a nice, healthy pair right here; although you might want to tuck yours back in, someone might trip. :)
@Moose: Well said, but for me the excuse game isn't as bothersome as someone who puts down others (on a normal basis) in order to make himself look bigger in front of his peers. It's even more disturbing to see these people do it to their own friends. Like I said, trash talking should be fun, but if someone is clearly not getting the same amount of enjoyment from it, you should tone it down. There will always be people that don't ever think it's enough, and they ruin great friendships.
Also, I GUARANFUCKINGTEE that someone who has already read this blog will talk about it tonight as if I'm not in the room with them. Honestly, some people on Dtoid aren't as "cool" as they seem.
@ Jack:
No one was crying you twat. You know what fuck you asshole.
@Moose, you deleted me off your friends list because of my post above? Wow, you need to grow up and learn to not take things to heart. You fucking little sissy bitch.
Says the guy who took me deleting him to heart.
It's pretty simple. I'm not going to waste space on my friends list on people who are going to run thier fucking mouth to me.
Lets settle this in a BlazBlue match, but you can't spam the X button.
Jimbo just got own'd.
Ok, I'm calling it tonight. BlazBlue Yo-Momma contest. The winner won't be the one who wins the fights, but the one who has the Wu-Tang Clan backing them at the end of the night.
Also, I get my fair share of trash talking on PSN, considerably less that what was present on XBL, but still a good amount.
Then again, I do play with some of the drunkest motherfuckers on the internet.
/Facepalm...
Can't we all just get along? D:
I know! Lets watch Pikeman's favorite movie evar.
See you online, sucka :D
I have a better way to settle this. Let's see who won't get laid off from thier job.
I WIN!
Not everybody works at BurgerKing Moose.
You're right, but you might have to if those bills keep comin' in.
Well gentleman, way to demonstrate how people can be civil as well as righteous and not allow their emotions to get the best of them; moreover, not getting personal in front of their peers...
Also, eeew bees!
You might be right. Can you ask if there are any opennings? Im sure they would love to replace you with a person in control of their emotions.
I can't because I don't work there, but I can swing by on the way home monday and pick u up an application
@ Pike:
Whatever man I came in here and dropped my thoughts on the issue in a civilized way and then look what happened.
@Moose
"Whatever man I came in here and dropped my thoughts on the issue in a civilized way and then look what happened."
You sure displayed rational thoughts last night.
