Regarding E3: Where's Pendleton Now?
IronPikeman | 7:37 PM on 06.02.2009 15 comments

After watching all three Press Conferences courtesy of Gametrailers live-feed of the show, I have to say that this E3 was amazing! There were a few missing factors that many of us speculated and expected to show, but I 'm sure we'll see them announced soon enough. Of course there is still a ton of E3 left for us to anticipate and be excited about.

Today's press conferences, as you all may already know, mainly consisted of Nintendo and Sony's offerings. While Nintendo's conference was very underwhelming, I want to focus on what Sony has discussed today and whether or not they had a few tricks up their sleeve or if it was a "fake-o" after all. To be fair, I will only be going over the PS3 material because quite frankly I really have no interest in portable gaming. I'm not saying that the PSP Go or any games and features, officially announced, were not a major part of the show and should be disregarded; what I'm saying is that I personally just prefer console gaming.

These are some of the things that captured my attention today:

Rockstar announced an exclusive new IP, Agent. Set in the 1970's, this game is based on espionage and that's all we know so far. I expect this to be a great addition to the new spy/saboteur fad that seems to be spreading amongst the industry.

Square Enix also announced Final Fantasy XIV Online exclusively for the PS3 and PC. I consider this to be the biggest, and my favorite surprise of E3, so far. It looks to be a sequel to the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI. While I dislike paying a monthly fee in order to play a game, I might succumb to this drawback as long as the game looks and plays good. The cinematic trailer is absolutely gorgeous, but why expect anything less from Square Enix?

United Front Games surprised us, as well, with ModNation Racers. Just think of Mario Kart with Little Big Planet customization. It looks like a very impressive game with a ton of customizable features and even a race track creator. It's astonishing how deep the creative aspect of the game goes, allowing you to edit everything from the landscape to you're own custom car. It plays much like Mario Kart, with power-ups and weapons, but unfortunately we weren't able to see very much due to time restrictions. I'm really looking forward to this title.

Assassins Creed 2 was played during the show, and I couldn't be more excited. It seems like the Ubisoft development team got the point that Assassins Creed 1 was a bit repetitive and added some great new features that will not only make the game less repetitive, but also more challenging. The smoke bombs and Leonardo De Vinci's Glider got me all hot and bothered, in the pants.

God of War 3 made it's appearance with a beautiful demonstration. For those of you turned-off by the underwhelming quality of last year's footage, you might want to take a look at the video below. The game looks absolutely amazing! I really can't wait to get my hands on this and start gutting centaurs, with my chaos blades, only to watch their organs pour out on the floor in front of me. WIN!

MAG's gameplay was presented with a staggering list of 256 real people playing. The maps are enormous and the grand scale of players is almost overwhelming. The overlook on the map with all the players fighting eachother gave me goosebumps. I'm definitely picking this up this Fall (I call dibbs on FNF hosting duty!).

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was present, with a gameplay demonstration that kind of sucked. It sucked that there wasn't a single flaw within the entire demo. It also sucked that the physics and sheer quality of the game is astonishing. Lastly, it sucks that it's a PS3 exclusive. :D (It's not like "you guys" didn't brag about your stuff).

A Gran Turismo 5 trailer was shown with a quick snipet of a damaged car. I knew Polyphony wouldn't let us down and provided us with something new to look forward to. I've always been a Gran Turismo fan and this installment is on the top of my list for most anticipated games coming to the PS3.

Last, but not least Project Ico or The Last Guardian was officially announced and shown. The trailer was not much different than the leaked video a few weeks ago, but there were some definite visual improvements. It's the last game of the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus series, but I hope team ICO continues to make wonderful games like this.

Overall, I think Sony brought the huge-ass guns at this years E3 and unless the other two companies have anything left to announce, I think they've taken the show. I hope you all enjoyed it; I know I did.

Why do you look so angry in your picture? Is it because you're wearing a suit?

I'M RIGHT HERE! HI!

Also, yes, I commend Sony on a great press conference, but I believe Microsoft's was still the best. They had little-to-no downtime, ran for a respectable ammount of time, and gave us a glimpse at shit we hadn't heard about before, whereas Sony gave us boring Jack Trenton and that overly-long ModNations Racers demo, shit we WERE expecting (Kaz even called the PSP Go "the worst-kept secret of E3), and the strangest-looking motion device I've ever seen. But, like I said, props on the GOW3 demo, the FF14 announcement, and the MGS trailer.

P.S. Get my name right next time.

I agree with you on a LOT of points, Uncharted 2 was fantastic, MAG is nirvana for the online gamer inside me, Mod nation speaks to my creative side and looks to be epic, epic in user generated content. The FF14 was a 'bomb' like announcement that came out of nowhere.

As a looong time fan of GoW, 3 looks, and plays, terrific.

But it was GT5 and the ICO game that I liked the most. :)

That Trico trailer was beautiful, trust team ICO to pull at your heartstrings and make you feel a varitey of emotions all at once!

You forgot Hannah Montana. How could you forget the star of Sony's show??

I definately cannot wait for some 256 player MAG action on FNF. Waiting for stupid HD buffering on the youtube to finish so I can look at it.

I'm boycotting all Uncharted 2 and GOW3 footage till the games come out. No point in hounding after something that won't be out for a while.

@Pendelton:

"and gave us a glimpse at shit we hadn't heard about before"

LOLOLOL...you so silly!

On a serious note, HANNAH MONTANA was the reason Sony won E3, hands down.

Sony really walked away with this E3, I was not expecting ( but I was hoping for) half of that. Besides if I dont say sony won E3 they will send kratos to gut me.( that poor poor centuar)

I'm really surprised so many people are excited about FF14. There is only one MMORPG king, and it's name is World of Warcraft. I played FF11 and thought it sucked compared to WoW. Since then Blizzard hs only continued to increase the quality of it's game. I'm not sure how FF14 can out do them in anyway.
norm9's Destructoid Blog
@SilverDragon- I think that one way ff14 can out do WoW is to make it free to play. No subscription fee for Ps3 owners. That's all I can think up. I'm not a big fan of WoW (only did the 14 day free trial and got bored) but making it a price issue would certainly help.

I'm excited for all of the games you mentioned.

I hope that Mod Nation Racers gameplay/controls are similar to Mario Kart. If so, that game could have some very addictive MP.

I wish they explained more about Agent.
