About Me

I'm Infinitestrike and I'm from the UK. My gaming history basically started with a Sega Mega Drive, followed by the PS1, PS2, Gamecube, GBA SP, DS, Wii and XBox 360. I guess my favourite games are the Metal Gear series, Devil May Cry series, Bioshock, Crash Bandicoot series (PS1), Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Gears of War and Halo.

My favourite boss fights are The End, Psycho Mantis and General RAM. My favourite levels to explore would probably be any of the planets in Mario Galaxy.

Currently playing:
Batman Arkham City
Modern Warefare 3
Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks

Help please: Computer Science or Computer Games design degree?
Infinitestrike | 4:46 AM on 02.07.2009 22 comments

At the moment I'm receiving offers from universities giving me the choice of either a computer games design degree or a computer science one. I'd like to make it into the games industry, (programming) but I'm not sure which course to pick. I've been told that Computer Science is a broader subject and I can specialize afterwards. The uni offering me computer games design says it can offer me work experience. Unfortunately, I’ve since read that not all of the computer games degrees in the UK hold much merit in the industry.

Any advice?

I'd say CS, I've heard a lot of stuff about CGd not holding merit, too. Plus, I don't think you'd get many advantages, and with CS you can go into a way broader range of jobs, just in case something goes wrong.

Go for CS. From anything I've read about the games industry, it's that CGd doesn't do enough to get you employed by the industry, where as CS does. And like above said, you have more choice should you not get into the games industry.

Computer science. It keeps your options WAY open. Which is FUCKING IMPORTANT.

And besides. I have a few friends taking games courses, its for dossers, if understand know the term.

Go for CS, it's more general and more widely accepted. You can also specialise during your degree, so you could take some gaming related courses.

Most certainly go for computer science, it actually means something.

Most gaming companies laugh at those with "game design degrees".

I'd imagine that experience would be better accepted than a gaming degree anyway. GET MODDING AND MAP MAKING!!

Since I don't have an opinon of my own, I guess you should go with Computer Science. Ya.

Funny, I asked the same thing to Shipero. He said CS too.

Yeah CS gives you the ability to not work in the games industry. And lets face it, you gotta keep that possibility.

Hi I work in the games industry. Most 'game design' diplomas do not carry a lot of weight. Computer science is a better bet, and gives you other options.

You can also get a computer science degree and then do a shorter games design diploma (separately) but get the computer science degree first.

you can get farther with a computer science degree than you can one specifically for game design. That is what i remember being told at least.

Thanks guys for the advice! I'll pick CS then. Why are the computer games design degrees so hated anyway?

@JKH13 I got offers from Queen Mary and Kings College London for Computer Science and Brunel and Westminster for Games Design.

From what I understand computer games design doesn't teach you the skills that game industry employers need. This is partly because it's quite a modern course.

@INFINITESTRIKE:

Go for Kings, that place is pretty awesome and the course should be good. Best social scene out of all the London Unis imo.

Also game design courses are hated because it seems to be a bit of a cop-out from what I understand. You learn what you need to know at the time but it doesn't take into account that technology changes over time and you will need the knowledge to easily adapt. Comp sci. not only teaches you indepth programming, but it helps with problem solving, logic and other skills that will come in handy whatever you decide to do.

It is also generally a much harder course and companies like to hire people that have the capacity to learn more and know how to work under stress rather than hire someone that knows what to do at a basic level but could have difficulties further along the road.

If neither work out, use my fallback plan. Get into porn. I've already picked out my name, Rusty Gunther!

I would go and do CS. It will be your better bet. I remember thinking the same thing when I was faced with the decision, one or the other.

I did some research and found that alot of people were going into the games industry, but there were really limited seats for the jobs. So I figured to play it safe and stick to CS. Also, I wanted anything game related to be a hobby and not some job that I'd eventually go insane over.

That was me two years ago. Now... I am going into Firefighting because I got burnt out on CS. I had done three years of computer programming in high school prior to my college life. Though my years of programming were relatively light compared to what others took, I still got burnt out and fast.

So you might be like me and the other millions of kids in college who go into one major, only to find out they want to do something else.
