How Char Aznable Helped Boost 360 Sales in Japan
Infinite Obscurity | 2:37 PM on 08.03.2008 12 comments

No, not the D-toid Char Aznable. The fictional one. Many of you may not have heard of it, but Mobile Suit Gundam: Operation Troy was released in Japan for the 360 last month and did indeed manage to boost the 360's sales a bit. In actuality though, I just wanted to bring this game to the attention of some of you guys.

Whether you're a Gundam fan or not, I think many people can agree that the idea of a Battlefield style game with huge robots is pretty badass. You start the game out on foot, and have the option of picking from 3 different classes. However, the on foot stuff is rarely used, even though it seems like theres a decent amount of weapons to use. The meat of the game begins once you get into a mobile suit. The game is mostly team-based, with 2 factions(Federation and Zeon) battling it out. You pick what your mobile suit is equipped with beforehand and it seems that theres a ton of customization options. If you ever get tired of the normal mobile suit gameplay, you can even jump into a tank, or just take out mobile suits with a homing missile while on foot. Also, you have the option to play the game in first person or third person view.

I would tell you guys to check out the demo using a Japanese XBL account, but after having downloaded it about a week or so ago, the demo has mysteriously disappeared off the Japanese marketplace. Even so, the demo already has quite a few dedicated players in the U.S. Personally, I didn't think the demo was too impressive, given the fact that you're restricted to one stage, one game mode, and one of 2 mobile suits total, but at least you can be assured that there will be a decent community when the game comes to U.S. shores.

On a somewhat unrelated note, if you do already have a Japanese XBL account you can check out the demo for Armored Core: for Answer.

lol I totally thought you meant D-toid Char Aznable.

I'd never gotten into gundam, but robots are cool, and it kinda reminds me of VirtualON. A US demo for this would be nice.

Why have I never heard of this game before, some of the PS2 Gundam games were decent. My favourite in the series has to be Gundam Wing though.

Char Aznable can boost the sales of anything in japan. they could make an automated flapping penis that sprays lemon juice in your eyes and it would still sell as long as it was colored pink/red and had the Zeon symbol on it.

now if youll excuse me, Im going to drink some juice out of my Space Jam sippy cup while laying on my Lion King bedspread.

Char Aznable is the most popular anime character among males in Japan. I would love one of those Zeon laptops that they released around 7 years ago.

lol I got a shout out? Awesome.

This actually looks pretty sweet for a Gundam game. I like the option of running around on foot, because it reminds me of Shiro Amada from the 08th MS Team OVA. The dude took out a Zaku with a rocket launcher.

Any Gundam news is good news for me. Except that Crossfire PS3 launch title.

This does sound pretty cool, but then that might just be because I'm rather fond of most Gundam series (I'm watching Gundam X right now!).

Ugh! Radgoll physics for gundams? Whaaaat? And did you see the explosion after the respawn timer? Also the boosts look pretty weak... bargain bin title on launch? lol

The ragdoll physics are quite silly and make no sense, but the game itself is still fun, so I don't mind too much. When actually in a mobile suit, the physics are pretty good. Also, the boosts depend on what mobile suit you are using, though usually it's best to use them in a tactical way, which is why people won't be wasting all their boost at once.

@Justice:
Gundam Wing?! are you serious? It's all about Zeta Gundam!

This game actually looks pretty decent although the music seems a bit too much. It'd be pretty badass to play in the cockpit view.
This has kind of got me excited for the next series of Gundam 00
