Ugh moments in gaming: Accidental resets
HydroTonix | 11:07 PM on 02.28.2009 14 comments

Are you one of those people that always accidentally shuts off or unplugs someones console while they are in the middle of a game? I am. And when it happens, boy does it happen.

You see, just a few hours ago my little brother was playing Persona 3. He is about 78 hours into the game, so he is almost finished. He just so happened to be at a part with a long stretch with lots of story, but not so many save points. Since he's been playing for around 2 hours, I think, hey, I'll go play some Dreamcast. Being the dumbass that I am, I wasn't thinking straight. So instead of just putting the TV on another input and leaving the PS2 on, I accidentally press reset!

For a little kid, he sure knows how to punch. I'm so sorry little buddy, I DIDN"T MEAN TO! ;_;

Have you ever experienced something like this?

Haha, I've had the power go out while I was playing before and I got sent back ridiculously far (or because I didn't have a memory card, like with Shadow of the Colossus...). Never anything like this though.

This one time when I first played .hack/G.U. for -hours- the day I bought it, I had a friend over and showed him some neat shit you can do but he wanted to play something else.
I thought nothing of it, turned it off reached for the game he was handing me--and it was at that moment I froze.

Right then I realized that I hadn't saved since I started that morning and I had lost everything.

Sadly I really enjoyed the game too but after losing that much progress I just couldn't bring myself to doing it all over again.

(P.S: The unsubbed version was awesome.)

Ya, I totally understand. It's the shits when this happens, like remember when I was playing The Hobbit on GameCube and then you turned off my game? That was sad.

I'm the guy that always hits the "reset combination" by mistake while button mashing in fighters. The worst thing is, the combo is different with each console. Like, one has just start and select, while another is start+select+a+b+x+y+shoulder buttons, or something.

How the hell do you hit Start+Select by accident during a fighting game anyway...?

I've had that happen as well. Left my game on while I had to go out for two hours and when I come back I hit the power button on my Playstation(as I'm use to turning on my system before my tv), then wonder why the hell the picture hasn't come one. Yeah, I got real disappointed after that.

@ Gantz: Map the LP and LK Buttons to start and select of course, duh. :)
And for me, the worst "Ugh" moment was saving over my file in Harvest Moon 64. I was like 8, but in the game, I was 2 years in, just married. I was absolutely crushed.

This reminds me of one of the greatest ways to piss off a sibling during the NES era. You go up to the NES while they're playing and press in the reset button but don't release. Since the system won't reset until you release the button, you have yourself your own makeshift hostage and detonation device so long as you have the button compressed. Then you may start the negotiations.

Ever see someone play a game while using their toe to keep the system on, because I sure have. I find it most effect to do during puzzle games.

Other than that, I've only accidentally turned off my DS phat and lite while playing. Either a unfortunate finger slip or bumping the power slider.

I'm pretty sure this has happened to me once, but I can't remember when.

Anyway, a similar thing happened. In Ocarina of Time, completing both the Shadow and Spirit temple before completing the game itself, in one sitting. And I didn't save, so when I had to do everything over again, when all I wanted to do was to hunt down those last heart pieces and golden skulltulas.

Most of my worst moments come from my 360 when I'm playing a game for a long amount of time, and since its always a 'save anywhere at anytime but there's an occasional autosave' kinda game I don't worry about saving a lot. But there's those points where is no autsave for awhile and I'm just playing and playing and get to a big point and....it freezes. I hate it so much.
