When I saw the trailer for this game it made me confused. It's taking the route that Skate. took when it was first revealed. They're marketing it to actual skateboarders. People that understand what it's about, people that know about skateboarding. As far as I can tell there have been no games that have been what skateboarding is actually about. Bloggers and reviewers praised Skate. for how realistic it was. How much it is actually like skateboarding IRL.
To tell you the truth it is nothing like it. In skate, it takes you two seconds to learn how to do a trick. Kickflip 180's in the game are simple. In real life it took me weeks to learn, and get the hang of that trick. It still gives me trouble.
Now I know that it's just a game, it shouldn't be like the real thing. If it were, it would take your entire life to master. People thought that the game was like skating because it looked like skating. An animation of a man masturbating looks like a man masturbating, it doesn't mean it's an actual person masturbating, or how it looks to be a person masturbating. Just like masturbating, everyone does it differently, everyone has there own style. In Skate. you cannot add your own flare to your style. If you youtube Corey Duffel, and Paul Rodriguez, you will be able to see the different styles. They both skate the relatively same obstacles, but they do there own tricks off of them.
Paul is definately more laid back than Corey.
Now to Tony Hawk's Ride. Its really too early to tell, but I bet it will be more gimmicky then a fat slut eating a dildo shaped carrot. Look at the thing. The teaser is awesome, it really gets across what skateboarding is about. Creativity, art, style, fun, excersize, friendship. When you are a skater and you go to an unknown or new city, you dont have anything to be afraid of. You have someting in common with it. Skateboarding, no matter where you go, you will always make friends.
My guess is that the peripheral will be shit. It looks solid, but it has nothing to do with an actual skateboard. Its fucking PLASTIC. What can you do with it, lean back, forward, and side to side. You probably have to hold a fucking controller in your hand to do the tricks. No offence guys, but I would bet one dollar that none of you skate. Not one of you would be able to balance on the tail for more than 3 seconds without falling on your fat tooshies. The thing is pointless. There really is no reason, or room for it to exist.
Maybe i'm just being too literal, but this thing looks horrible. I really don't see how it will add to the skateboarding community. There is, and never will be a game that will capture skateboarding the way it should be. Pushing down the city street, weaking through cars, the wind on your hair(oh fuck I just said the wind in your hair...Fuck my life), video games just can't emulate that. There is no way to capture the strong feeling of accomplishment and freedom you get from landing a trick, or simply just cruising down the street next to your best friend and kickfliping over a man hole.
I don't think that any of you have heard this side of the arguement (issue?) so I hope this shed some light on skateboarding games from the perspective of an actual skater. I feel very strongly about these game, don't get me wrong, I love em' to death. I played TH Underground until my balls dropped. Anyone want a challenge. I really can't wait to play TH Ride just to see for myself.
Interesting article, man. Though I don't know 2 shits about skateboarding, I kind of twinged when I first saw the new skateboard peripheral. I really hope it turns out to be good. :/
Great write-up. I don't know many skateboarders (even though I tried my damndest to get into it in high school), and I always wondered what you kids think of these skating games.
I was a skateboarder myself too. Then Tony Hawk released his game. Dude, I was getting so annoyed when kids thought all the tricks in the game were possible in real life. Yeah sure, I'll do a 900 while standing on the floor. "Have to get my 'Special' bar full first kids!"
But the game itself was great. I don't know about you but when I got the game I couldn't learn the tricks in 2 seconds. It was actually quite hard at first. But (and this is about the only resemblance with real life skateboarding) after investing some time - and blisters - I got the hang of it and I never let it go. The thing I hate about the newer TH games is that it really isn't about skating no more. What the fuck man, I can keep doing a manual forever linking all my tricks, drive cars, riding down a mountain in a shopping cart etc. What a bunch of bullshit.
When I first read about Skate I was highly interested but I could never get into it. Tony Hawk ruined it. It too hard to forget the TH controls. And to be honest I don't want to. If I want to play a skateboard game I just fire up good old Tony Hawk 2.
Skateboarding games are nothing like the real thing. We all know that but we can love both. If done correctly.
Tony Hawks has just been about the sublime combo-based gameplay, and flicking your way around a virtual city up to now. It invokes the same sort of feeling i'd get from a Mario title up to now..
I'm kinda worried most of all that with this new title, if I tried to do anything i'd fall off the board and break my head open. I mean, that board is tiny, and I can barely stand up on a real one!
It'll be interesting to see how the game turns out nonetheless, for gamers and for skaters alike. If the board is too hard to use, then it could potentially put off a large portion of its audience. (and if it also uses a controller, whats the point?)
I see your point, but I think these games (for myself) are for people that enjoy their hobby but cannot for some reason enjoy their hobby at that specific time (for instance, its raining outside or something).
I lived vicariously through the Tony Hawk games when I wasn't able to make outside to skate. Plus, its a hyper reality in that you can do these tricks in the game that you can't do in real life.
One of the reasons I disliked Skate was because it WAS too realistic compared to the craziness of the early Tony Hawk games. I had trouble doing basic tricks, and that took away all the fun that I had with the Tony Hawk games.
Lastly, ever play Top Skater in the arcades? I practically collapsed in ecstasy when I saw it at my local arcade oh so many years ago. It had a plastic board you stood on and it let you ollie and do flip tricks.
I've been skating for a few years now myself and I completely agree with you about the whole "Skate being more realistic" my cousin got Skate and he was playing it and he was like "This is so amazing its like super realistic, its like I'm actually skateboarding" and then i played for 5 minutes and immediately I was like "What the fuck is this shit, it feels nothing like real skating". As for the new Tony Hawk game, the only reason I ever played the old ones was because they were the only skateboarding game around, now since Skate is around it is definitely better than Tony Hawk games, We will have to see about this one....it will probably suck cock.
Interesting view. I personally think THRide should go back to basics like THPS1-3. As you say, it can't capture the feeling of real skateboarding with a peripheral, I think it should go back to what made the originals so much fun.

If I have to do an actual kick flip with the controller, I'll fucking fail before trying.
