The Destroy Haxan, Win Street Fighter IV Contest: Week One Update
Haxan | 7:48 AM on 12.07.2008 24 comments

Heys, folks. Week one of battle is now behind us. We've had 5 people actually compete so far, and up till now it's all been on the Playstation 3. Today that all changes as 360 owners are now going to jump into play! I expect many new challengers to enter the tournament.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, all rules and info can be found here: rules. So, give that a good read, add me as a friend to your console of choice, and challenge me at Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix anytime you see me online. Battle me as that day's theme character for your chance to win a copy of Street Fighter IV or other prizes.

Enough with that. Here are the rankings of the first 5 days of battle:

1st Place: senisan
2nd Place: Nilcam
3rd Place: y0j1mb0
4th Place: casualweaponry
5th Place: CWal37

I keep saying that it's not too late to join. I now have a great way to show you exactly what I mean. The current leader, senisan has so far only competed on one day. He wasted me with Ken, winning 13 of the 15 total matches. Nilcam, was off to a rough start on day one, with the exact opposite score. But Nilcam moved his way up to second place (and is on his way to stealing the top spot) by competing every day since then and improving his win record. Your total wins are just as important as your win ratio. So you don't have to compete every day to win. But, just because you have a bad day, doesn't mean you're out.

Some shoutouts for week one:

Yojimbo is the front-runner for the Cheapest Fighter award, but did so not in the way that you may be thinking. He's employed a psychological tactic that isn't in the game code, and is incredibly effective. If you ask him, he may share his secret (but, somehow, I'm doubting it). It's not too late to outdo him with some good, old-fashioned scrubby tactics. So let's see some more tik-throws, Psycho Crusher spamming and cheap trap set-ups.

Senisan seriously layed waste to me using Ken. This was by far, my biggest ass-kicking of the week. I'm very impressed and can't wait for the opportunity to redeem myself.

CWal37 courageously jumped into this challenge having never played a Street Fighter game before last week. He did really well for a 1st-timer. I really hope to watch his skills improve over time. If you ever need a sparring partner beyond this contest, message me. Grab you a headset and we can go over strategies in-game sometime.

Nilcam has competed every day so far. Always there the minute I log on each night. Last night he gave my Ryu some epic battles with Blanka. I've never had the "chess-style" battles (where you're trying to outthink your opponent moreso than outfight him/her) against someone using Blanka before. He came out with 8 of 15 wins and my respect.

Okay, Xbox fans. Your day in the sun is now. Get online and give me what for! For those wanting to compete, again I ask for you to give the rules a good read-through, and send me that friend request to get things started!

Finally, regular ranking updates will find themselves in the forums. On Sundays throughout the contest I'll be posting these weekly recaps in the c-blogs.

Complete rules can be found here.

Third place?? Hmmm... considering I crushed Nilcam and usually get the better of Senisan, I gotta start participating more.

As for that secret technique... shhhh.

Great fights, been enjoying myself.
nilcam's Destructoid Blog
I joined in on this contest in order to force myself to explore characters other than my main roster. I've definitely succeeded in this regard. While I struggled with Ryu and Guile, the games last night changed my thoughts about Blanka. I had not considered him a contender before those games. I feel no small amount of pride in the fact that I've changed the way 2 players feel about that character. The games have been great. The losses have been hard but that makes the victories sweeter.
Haxan's Destructoid Blog
I also want to give a shout to casualweaponry. He has the 2nd best overall win percentage behind senisan and is currently only a minute fraction of a point behind y0ji. When he showed up on day one and proceeded to best me in straight on Ryu vs. Ryu battles, I thought to myself: I really need to elevate my game.

@Nilcam,
I can't believe how much I'm learning during this whole contest. I am having so much fun. And you are adapting to my playing style really well which is forcing me to adapt and keep on my toes.

@Yoj,
I've also had a blast during our fights. You're really effing good. Every win that I walk away with makes me feel proud. Each defeat brings no shame.

Seeing this makes me want to play Street Fighter so bad. Wish I didn't still have a week left at college before break. I left my PS3 at home to prevent myself from playing games instead of studying.

Happy to see that I'll still have a chance to play with Sagat. When I think of cheap in Street Fighter, that is who comes to mind first for me. I haven't played this version of SF yet, so I don't know if they changed him a lot, but I remember being 8 feet tall and spamming high and low fireballs.

I'll actually be online this week! I hope to get in a few rounds with you.

DanMartingan was the Xbox 360 guinea pig. Like my first PS3 matches vs. Yoj, Nilcam and casualweaponry, there were technical issues. My router's range is just plain not good. So, I've now got both my PS3 and my Xbox hooked into my 19" monitor which is just 3 feet and a wall away from the router. Hopefully this fixes the Xbox's dropping/lag issues as well.

At any rate, thanks to Dan for his patience. Also for his dirty fighting. Great matches today. I'll be back on from 8-10 EST after a nap (seriously, I had to put a contest on while my job has me working 28 straight nights. Brilliant!).
Haxan's Destructoid Blog
Also, the Xbox controller needs to burn in hell.
Danmartigan's Destructoid Blog
Hey Haxan... great matches. I hate Vega, but I think I got his dirty tactics down :)

You beat my Guile with Ryu once, nice work. But dude, you need an ethernet cable when you play this game. Whenever I play with someone on wireless, they will often lag out at the end of the match and although it appears to the wireless player that they won, they in fact did not. I had this happen with my brother just the other night.
CWal37's Destructoid Blog
Now that I'm in the thick of finals I doubt I can play much. Not necessarily because I'm busy, but because my roommate will be studying non-stop.

I hope I can make a few more before I have to leave though. Playing against you and other people is far more fun than playing against the computer or random button-mashers that walk by.
Haxan's Destructoid Blog
@cwal37,
I do hope that you can make it in. But either way, keep my username handy should you ever want to throw down any old time.

@rab,
Friend me and let's get this thing moving.

Thanks Haxan.

I also finally found a 360 fighting stick, so I'll be playing HD Remix there too!

Thanks for the update Haxan. Wow, I'm in first...that was a bit unexpected but it's way to early to celebrate, the battle continues...
RAB's Destructoid Blog
Cmon slacker you've been sitting at the title screen of the RE4 demo for like 15 minutes!

I'M GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE.
Maybe not as vega..but as soon as vega is done and over with..

IM GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE.
Haxan's Destructoid Blog
Sorry, Rab. I got a phone call there at the end from my old best friend from high school that I hadn't talked to in almost ten years. I forgot to turn my console off at ten. By then I was already running hella late for work, else I'd've given you an explanation. But, if you're interested, we can do some make-up battles since you did technically challenge me while I was online.
Char Aznable's Destructoid Blog
Damn, I have to wait a whole week to read about the ass kicking I received as Vega? Akuma, like the Wu-Tang Clan, ain't nothin' to fuck with, though. Those were great games that we had.

I'll see you tonight. Time for Ryu.
Haxan's Destructoid Blog
Um, read all about it, or something...

Chaz's Vega got ass-by Haxan. Extry Extry Extry?

All better? Oh, yeah. Chaz was the first person to pull out teh Akuma. Which officially made him the front-runner in the cheap game contest. Winning over DanMartigan who makes turtling with Vega into an artform. Winning over Y0j1mb0's secret technique.

This was all, however trumped just a little while ago... C2C Shiro used some mad FBI profilin' skills. Read all about it in next week's edition!

I will have a forum update tomorrow morning. Also, Char is really good, and Dan's Vega is cheap as a mofo. Which is to say good. Because if you can't find a way around something, in my opinion, it's because you suck. And I sucked harder than a Taiwanese hooker.

Also, the 360 controller is ass. On fire. Covered in leeches. In a hurricane.
Haxan's Destructoid Blog
That was supposed to read "Chaz's Vega got ass-raped by Haxan."

I am fail. Just ask DanMartigan.
Char Aznable's Destructoid Blog
All I'm sayin' is...may God have mercy on your soul when it's Akuma's night. lol

Also, Chaz.
Danmartigan's Destructoid Blog
Haxan is not fail, he is win!

Looking forward to Ryu's today.. I will try to find you online at some point.

Also, Chaz.
RAB's Destructoid Blog
lol wutz a chaz
Haxan's Destructoid Blog
The results through December 8th are up in the forums right now. I'm off to buy a soldering iron. After getting destroyed by Char last night, I need to get medeival!
Haxan's Destructoid Blog
The SNES to 360 mod was a failure. But I gave the the 360 controller another try. WIth much practise I was pulling off my jump hurricanes 75% of the time as opposed to 6% last night. But, Char will still probably own me next time again. I'm all out of excuses at this point.

 about me

Random gaming facts about Haxan

Legitimately beat Mike Tyson and went through Another World Circuit undefeated.

Beat the original Contra without dying. Twice.

Can land the damn plane in Top Gun and can also refuel in midair.

Can't beat Ghost & Goblins without the level select code and has never lied about it.

Thinks Friday the 13th is a great game even if the physics, controls and weapons are garbage.

Mario Paint caused him to buy a Super Nintendo and largely leave his Sega Genesis behind. He has played it more than most video games and wore down the mouse pad so that the grid only shows around the corners.

Has beaten Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers on the SNES on the hardest difficulty without losing a single round. Multiple times.

Is still friends with the girl who worked at a local game store and sold him Street Fighter II nearly 17 years ago.

Beat Final Fantasy 2 in a weekend when he was a kid, yet can't get through a role-playing game these days if his life depended on it.

Has never beaten Final Fantasy VII.

Prefers pads to sticks.

Likes the N64 controller.

Prefers the Duke to the S-controller.

Doesn't think that Super Mario 64 is all that great.

Got an Xbox mostly for Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. And thinks it's a damn good game. Really.

Swore he would never buy a Game Boy Advanced SP, but immediately broke down once the NES edition came out. (And regarding the NES Classics series, true in-store dialogue: "Dude, are you serious?! They seriously expect people to pay 20 dollars a piece for games they can just downlo...Ooh! Zelda!")

Really liked the first Halo. (Well, there goes my dtoid cred.)

Can rock out Dynamite Rave in Dance Dance Revolution like it's nobody's business.

Played the hell out of Animal Crossing: Wild World and hid that fact from nobody.

Stomped Brad Nicholson at Street Fighter IV, but had to resort to the cheapest of tactics in order to do so. ;)

Thinks you're really, really, really smart. And pretty.

Top ten favorite games (in no particular order):

•The Legend of Zelda (NES)
•Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (NES)
•The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
•Phantom 2040 (SNES)
•Street Fighter II (any version)
•Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2)
•Final Fantasy 3/6 (SNES)
•Ico (PS2)
•Sin and Punishment (N64)
•Picross (DS)

(NVGR)

I love drawing, though I realize that I'm not very good. I figured early on that drawing my own header art would help my blogs stand out. Thanks to Destructoid, and to the scanner that Carollelogram got me for my birthday last year, I feel like I've developed a unique style that's distinctly my own.

Outside of games I've got a DVD collection that is exploding out of a 5'x6' shelf (over 400 titles). So suffice it to say that I love movies. I'm a huge horror fan and I host an annual Dusk Till Dawn Horror Movie Marathon nearly every October. My top ten favorite films in order are as follows:

1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cativo, 1966)
2. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
3. Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai, 1954)
4. The City of Lost Children (La Citι des enfants perdus, 1995)
5. The Apartment (1960)
6. Strings (2004)
7. Heavenly Creatures (1994)
8. The Big Lebowski (1998)
9. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
10. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Music-wise, my top 3 bands are The Pixies, The Velvet Underground and Radiohead. I listen to damn near every genre of music (except modern country. I yearn for the days of Hank Williams, Sr. and Tammy Wynette). Hit random on my mp3 player and you'll get everything from darkwave to hip hop to 80's synthpop. I karaoke pretty regularly. I can't sing, but I surround myself with people who can. Still, you've not experienced all there is in life until you've seen me proper butcher True by Spandau Ballet.

Then, as for the literary interests, my love lies with pulp detective novels of the thirties and forties. Raymond Chandler is simply the greatest ever. And Dashiell Hammett is just fantastic. Lately, I've been reading through Frank Herbert's Dune Chronicles at Carollelogram's recommendation. Two books in and I have to say they're astonishing.

If you do the Twitter thing, Haxan1 is my handle should you want to follow me.

Feel free to friend me to your console of choice should you ever want to play a game of Street Fighter. Just be sure to let me know that you're from Destructoid and you'll get the royal treatment.
