Random gaming facts about Haxan

Legitimately beat Mike Tyson and went through Another World Circuit undefeated.

Beat the original Contra without dying. Twice.

Can land the damn plane in Top Gun and can also refuel in midair.

Can't beat Ghost & Goblins without the level select code and has never lied about it.

Thinks Friday the 13th is a great game even if the physics, controls and weapons are garbage.

Mario Paint caused him to buy a Super Nintendo and largely leave his Sega Genesis behind. He has played it more than most video games and wore down the mouse pad so that the grid only shows around the corners.

Has beaten Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers on the SNES on the hardest difficulty without losing a single round. Multiple times.

Is still friends with the girl who worked at a local game store and sold him Street Fighter II nearly 17 years ago.

Beat Final Fantasy 2 in a weekend when he was a kid, yet can't get through a role-playing game these days if his life depended on it.

Has never beaten Final Fantasy VII.

Prefers pads to sticks.

Likes the N64 controller.

Prefers the Duke to the S-controller.

Doesn't think that Super Mario 64 is all that great.

Got an Xbox mostly for Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. And thinks it's a damn good game. Really.

Swore he would never buy a Game Boy Advanced SP, but immediately broke down once the NES edition came out. (And regarding the NES Classics series, true in-store dialogue: "Dude, are you serious?! They seriously expect people to pay 20 dollars a piece for games they can just downlo...Ooh! Zelda!")

Really liked the first Halo. (Well, there goes my dtoid cred.)

Can rock out Dynamite Rave in Dance Dance Revolution like it's nobody's business.

Played the hell out of Animal Crossing: Wild World and hid that fact from nobody.

Stomped Brad Nicholson at Street Fighter IV, but had to resort to the cheapest of tactics in order to do so. ;)

Thinks you're really, really, really smart. And pretty.

Top ten favorite games (in no particular order):

•The Legend of Zelda (NES)
•Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (NES)
•The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
•Phantom 2040 (SNES)
•Street Fighter II (any version)
•Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2)
•Final Fantasy 3/6 (SNES)
•Ico (PS2)
•Sin and Punishment (N64)
•Picross (DS)

I love drawing, though I realize that I'm not very good. I figured early on that drawing my own header art would help my blogs stand out. Thanks to Destructoid, and to the scanner that Carollelogram got me for my birthday last year, I feel like I've developed a unique style that's distinctly my own.

Outside of games I've got a DVD collection that is exploding out of a 5'x6' shelf (over 400 titles). So suffice it to say that I love movies. I'm a huge horror fan and I host an annual Dusk Till Dawn Horror Movie Marathon nearly every October. My top ten favorite films in order are as follows:

1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cativo, 1966)
2. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
3. Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai, 1954)
4. The City of Lost Children (La Citι des enfants perdus, 1995)
5. The Apartment (1960)
6. Strings (2004)
7. Heavenly Creatures (1994)
8. The Big Lebowski (1998)
9. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
10. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Music-wise, my top 3 bands are The Pixies, The Velvet Underground and Radiohead. I listen to damn near every genre of music (except modern country. I yearn for the days of Hank Williams, Sr. and Tammy Wynette). Hit random on my mp3 player and you'll get everything from darkwave to hip hop to 80's synthpop. I karaoke pretty regularly. I can't sing, but I surround myself with people who can. Still, you've not experienced all there is in life until you've seen me proper butcher True by Spandau Ballet.

Then, as for the literary interests, my love lies with pulp detective novels of the thirties and forties. Raymond Chandler is simply the greatest ever. And Dashiell Hammett is just fantastic. Lately, I've been reading through Frank Herbert's Dune Chronicles at Carollelogram's recommendation. Two books in and I have to say they're astonishing.

If you do the Twitter thing, Haxan1 is my handle should you want to follow me.

Feel free to friend me to your console of choice should you ever want to play a game of Street Fighter. Just be sure to let me know that you're from Destructoid and you'll get the royal treatment.

The Destroy Haxan, Win Street Fighter IV Contest: The Awards Ceremony
Haxan | 12:47 PM on 01.16.2009 20 comments

Before getting to the prize winners, I want to throw out a few honorary awards. If I weren't getting tossed out of my current place (damn roommates wanting their evil girlfriends to move in), and my living expenses were going to double in March, you'd all get prizes. But, since reality is a hard, cold mistress I hope my praise will do. So, without further rambling:

The Gauntlet Award (awarded to players who fought me with every character):
DanMartigan, senisan82, C2C Shiro, TrailerParkJesus, Nilcam, Smurfee McGee, kirbilot

Longest Winning Streak (the person who spent the longest time at the top of the rankings):
senisan82

Most Hilarious Fighter (the person who cracked me up the most in battle):
Genki-JAM (Seriously, I would play any game with him. This guy could make Yaris fun!)

The Most Courageous (the person who joined the competition, yet had never played a Street Fighter game before last Tuesday):
cwal37 and NoLaw

Nicest Guy to Ever Kick Your Ass:
C2C Shiro

Which brings me to the prize winners.

First, there was The Attendance Award. This is awarded to the competitor who fought with the most theme characters on their respective days. There really wasn't much of a contest. The person who won this award missed only two days out of 17. Once was Christmas Day which wasn't surprising because I was barely online. The other night he was hosting a party. In addition to just fighting everyday, he was almost always the first person to throw down a challenge when I showed up online.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the winner of The Attendance Award to the soul of this contest:
Nilcam
Nilcam will be receiving an official Street Fighter Fight Night t-shirt from Capcom.com's online store. It's such a badass shirt, and I hope that he will wear it with pride!

Next we have the Cheapest Payer Award. This was an award initially created to encourage scrubbery and cheap tactics from all fighters. Since the Destructoid Community is made up of none but the most honorable gamers from around the world, I had to alter this one a good deal. I wrote c-blogs spotlighting the cheapest of the cheap, and in most cases I made up outlandish stories about some of our competitors. I then put it to a vote. The votes ended in a tie. So I flipped a coin to determine the winner.

The winner of The Cheapest Fighter Award goes to:
Genki-Jam
He will be receiving a prize that I'm still constructing. It should be completed this weekend. Hopefully, he'll throw up a c-blog when he receives it because it is coming along pretty sweet.

Since I hate to just leave it at that, I'm going to pick up a runner-up prize. This will go to:
Char Aznable
I'll be picking you up something awesome and cheap (to match your fighting style) off of eBay once I have your address. I've already got a few things in mind.

Finally, we have the moment you've all been waiting for: the awarding of The Grand Prize! This is for the competitor who had the highest score comprised of their total wins multiplied by their win ratio. And the winner is:
DanMartigan

DanMartigan managed to squeeze out a victory at the last second. It really was a photo finish. It all came down to 5 wins for him. Here are the final rankings, complete with the wins and losses, win percentages and overall points for the top ten contestants:

name: points, wins-losses, win percentage
1. DanMartigan: 115, 144-36, 80%
2. senisan82: 106, 141-46, 75.4%
3. CharAznable: 69, 107-58, 64.8%
4. C2C Shiro: 54, 97-76, 56.1%
5. TrailerParkJesus: 49, 93-85, 52.2%
6. y0j1mb0: 36, 67-58, 53.6%
7. Rab: 29, 55-49, 52.9%
8. Nicam: 27, 75-134, 35.9%
9. Smurfee McGee: 25, 64-102, 38.6%
10. kirbilot: 20, 60-122, 33%
11. casualweaponry
12. Genki-JAM
13. Cataract
14. (tied) cwal37
14. (tied) NoLaw
14. (tied) Infinite Obscurity

I truly wish to thank every single competitor for putting in as much time as they did to make this contest a huge success. This was an amazing experience for me to put on, and I hope you all enjoyed it. Congratulations to all of the winners!

Those who have won prizes, please PM me your addresses and I will get to sending/ordering/pre-ordering your prizes right away.

Who says nice guys finish last? (I certainly didn't get first but that's besides the point :P)

I had loads of fun being in this competition and I'm pretty sure everyone else did as well.

Also, congratulations to Dan Martigan on placing first place in the competition.

Oh SNAP. I won something?! Ahaha awesome! Haxan, I had a GREAT time fighting you, man. We'll definitely have to play some more Street Fighter sometime (either 2 or 4, depending on when you "recover") 'cause it was just fantastic fighting you! You actually helped me to get better at the game with more characters with this contest.

Congrats to everyone, and to Haxan for putting on the BEST DTOID CONTEST EVER. Seriously, this was a hell of a lot of fun, and helped me meet some awesome fighters. Hopefully we'll all get together for a big ol' SF player match orgy some time very soon.

C2C Shiro and I have the same exact win-loss record, but I'm higher? Am I missing something? I hate math, forgive me.

Also, FRONT PAGE THIS!

WOOOoooo!!! I didn't think I would pull that off. Good battle, Senisan. That was a close call.

Thanks for putting on such a kickass contest Haxan. I had a lot of fun and I learned some new moves with some fighters that I wouldn't have picked otherwise. Dhalsim still sucks.

To everyone who joined in, thanks for keeping the spirit of Street Fighter alive, it warms my old arcade cockles. I look forward some some player matches with you guys in the very near future. With HD Remix and SFIV on the horizon, this is gonna be a good year.. I love you man!

Who'da thunk that a game about beating people up would bring out the warm and fuzzy feelings from the Dtoid community? Danmartigan, I'll warm your cockles any day.

If anyone's around late tonight for FNF, I'll probably be hosting HD Remix on XBLA from like 2 or 3 am until question marks EST. My GT is ShinigamiBV. That's a lot of fucking abbreviations, I apologize.

Cool, great contest. I'm back at school with usable internet in a few days, which means that I'm going to start playing again. As soon as I finish all these other games that is.

I can't believe I did so horribly; it was the still the best contest ever. Everyone had fun and met some new fighters. Perhaps tomorrow or next week we should do the SF orgy.
Haxan is the man, Dan is the man that beat the man. Front page.

Congratulations to Danmartigan, and thanks to Haxan for putting on this awesome contest. I was apprehensive to join this at first for fear of getting whooped, which I did, but it was a ton of fun and I am completely hooked on SF now. Practicing and competing with all the characters has made me appreciate how great this game is. It was an awesome time and I look forward to more fights in the future!

Yay, Danmartigan is my brother!

We spent many a day in dingy arcades as young folks, being abused by SFII masters until we became masters ourselves. He is a little bit crazier than me now though because he knows all the ins and outs of the HD Remix, but I will still get him... I need to practice up on the HD Remix, perhaps I will join you guys tonight.
