Random gaming facts about Haxan

Legitimately beat Mike Tyson and went through Another World Circuit undefeated.

Beat the original Contra without dying. Twice.

Can land the damn plane in Top Gun and can also refuel in midair.

Can't beat Ghost & Goblins without the level select code and has never lied about it.

Thinks Friday the 13th is a great game even if the physics, controls and weapons are garbage.

Mario Paint caused him to buy a Super Nintendo and largely leave his Sega Genesis behind. He has played it more than most video games and wore down the mouse pad so that the grid only shows around the corners.

Has beaten Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers on the SNES on the hardest difficulty without losing a single round. Multiple times.

Is still friends with the girl who worked at a local game store and sold him Street Fighter II nearly 17 years ago.

Beat Final Fantasy 2 in a weekend when he was a kid, yet can't get through a role-playing game these days if his life depended on it.

Has never beaten Final Fantasy VII.

Prefers pads to sticks.

Likes the N64 controller.

Prefers the Duke to the S-controller.

Doesn't think that Super Mario 64 is all that great.

Got an Xbox mostly for Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. And thinks it's a damn good game. Really.

Swore he would never buy a Game Boy Advanced SP, but immediately broke down once the NES edition came out. (And regarding the NES Classics series, true in-store dialogue: "Dude, are you serious?! They seriously expect people to pay 20 dollars a piece for games they can just downlo...Ooh! Zelda!")

Really liked the first Halo. (Well, there goes my dtoid cred.)

Can rock out Dynamite Rave in Dance Dance Revolution like it's nobody's business.

Played the hell out of Animal Crossing: Wild World and hid that fact from nobody.

Stomped Brad Nicholson at Street Fighter IV, but had to resort to the cheapest of tactics in order to do so. ;)

Thinks you're really, really, really smart. And pretty.

Top ten favorite games (in no particular order):

•The Legend of Zelda (NES)
•Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (NES)
•The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
•Phantom 2040 (SNES)
•Street Fighter II (any version)
•Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2)
•Final Fantasy 3/6 (SNES)
•Ico (PS2)
•Sin and Punishment (N64)
•Picross (DS)

I love drawing, though I realize that I'm not very good. I figured early on that drawing my own header art would help my blogs stand out. Thanks to Destructoid, and to the scanner that Carollelogram got me for my birthday last year, I feel like I've developed a unique style that's distinctly my own.

Outside of games I've got a DVD collection that is exploding out of a 5'x6' shelf (over 400 titles). So suffice it to say that I love movies. I'm a huge horror fan and I host an annual Dusk Till Dawn Horror Movie Marathon nearly every October. My top ten favorite films in order are as follows:

1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cativo, 1966)
2. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
3. Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai, 1954)
4. The City of Lost Children (La Citι des enfants perdus, 1995)
5. The Apartment (1960)
6. Strings (2004)
7. Heavenly Creatures (1994)
8. The Big Lebowski (1998)
9. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
10. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Music-wise, my top 3 bands are The Pixies, The Velvet Underground and Radiohead. I listen to damn near every genre of music (except modern country. I yearn for the days of Hank Williams, Sr. and Tammy Wynette). Hit random on my mp3 player and you'll get everything from darkwave to hip hop to 80's synthpop. I karaoke pretty regularly. I can't sing, but I surround myself with people who can. Still, you've not experienced all there is in life until you've seen me proper butcher True by Spandau Ballet.

Then, as for the literary interests, my love lies with pulp detective novels of the thirties and forties. Raymond Chandler is simply the greatest ever. And Dashiell Hammett is just fantastic. Lately, I've been reading through Frank Herbert's Dune Chronicles at Carollelogram's recommendation. Two books in and I have to say they're astonishing.

If you do the Twitter thing, Haxan1 is my handle should you want to follow me.

Feel free to friend me to your console of choice should you ever want to play a game of Street Fighter. Just be sure to let me know that you're from Destructoid and you'll get the royal treatment.

Destroy Haxan, Win Street Fighter IV Contest: Week 5 Update
Haxan | 7:45 AM on 01.05.2009 13 comments

I hugged Balrog and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.

We are in the final two days of official fighting in the contest. After 34 days of old-school 2D Remixed Street Fighting action, we are finally nearing the end. Let me just get to the results here quickly, and then on to the recap.

1st: Senisan82 PS3
2nd: DanMartigan 360
3rd: Char Aznable 360
4th: C2C Shiro 360
5th: y0j1mb0 PS3
6th: TrailerParkJesus 360
7th: Nilcam PS3
8th: Rab 360
9th: kirbilot PS3
10th: Smurfee McGee 360
11th: casualweaponry PS3
12th: Cataract 360
13th: Genki-JAM 360
14th (tied): cwal37 PS3
14th (tied): NoLaw PS3

As I said before, tonight's 360 matches with Balrog and tomorrow's PS3 matches with Dhalsim are the last official days in the tournament. Wednesday and Thursday will be set aside for make-up matches on the 360 and PS3 respectively. I'll be online each night between 8-10pm. We've made it this far, so I'm sure you know how it works.

This weekend I want to throw out a ton of time for final make-up matches. I'm not sure how the schedule is going to go, because I may or may not be working all weekend. So it's going to go one of two ways: 1) I don't have to work this weekend, I take a break on Friday and then have a huge 12-hour Street Fighter blitz on Saturday, or 2) I have to work all weekend, so I suck it up and fire out 6 hours of play on each day. I should hopefully know more by Wednesday, so I'll give an update along with the Cheapest Player Nominee post.

Sunday will see the final weekly update, as well as the final nominee for Cheapest Player. Voting for the Cheapest Player Award will be happen in the comments. One vote per Dtoid community member. You do not have to have competed in the contest to vote. Finally, the winners of all prizes will be anounced on the following Friday.

Here is my final word of the day: this past month I've devoted nearly every last second of my free time to this contest in one form or another. And every step of the way it's been an absolute blast (with the exception of the frustration caused by learning to make the Xbox d-pad work better than a 2600 joystick). I also realize that you have all given massive amounts of your time to be a part of this contest and really make it the huge success that it has become. The Destructoid Community and especially you guys, its finest fighters, have given me some of the greatest gaming moments that I have experienced ever. So, thank you all.

These are the final days. Let's make them great!

(Remember to check out the Destroy Haxan Forum Post for the most up-to-date rankings and schedule information).

I am truly sad to see this contest go. This has been the best Destructoid contest ever and it was user created. Way to go Haxan! I have thoroughly enjoyed some matches (Blanka, Fei Long) and cursed LOUDLY at others (T. Hawk, Balrog) but I have grown as a player and have a newfound respect for many characters.

Best Dtoid contest ever.

Damn, I was really off my game this weekend. I guess I'm pretty much out of the running if my Akuma couldn't pull through for me, but fuck it. I was in this for the awesome battles, not the prize.

So when all is said and done with the contest, and we play again some time, are you finally going to pick someone else? lol

@Nilcam,
For realz, I'm glad you're having fun and that you've actually taken things away from it. I just thought it would be a fun way to get practice in against all of the characters and to learn their "remixed" styles. I had no idea that it would be anything more than a few fun matches and some healthy competition for anyone else. I'm glad to see that it's more than that.

@Char,
Count on it. I'm always going to love the straight-up shoto battles the best, but mixing things up throughout a night is definitely the most fun way to play. Besides, now everyone is used to my Ryu fighting-style. Playing as everyone else might help you guys to forget and improve my chances!

@NoLaw,
Feel free to hit me up anytime. After this contest is over, I'm jumping into this idea that I have for a set of episodic levels in LittleBigPlanet. I know that will become frustrating and I'll welcome the break every now and again.

not this weekend, but the next we should have some after-contest thing. One for PS3, one for 360. y'know, start a room and invite the contest people.
Maybe for Fnf.
Anyway, this is one excellent contest, and I've had some fun.
Major props to you, Haxan, for taking the time to do this.
SFIV contest coming soon?...haha

Agree with char, best dtoid contest I've ever taken part of. I'm better than when I started, and now I can actually pick the "?" in the select screen and be confident enough in whatever character pops up.

And ditto what smurfee mcgee said

I'll be honest though Haxan, I can't wait till this contest is over so we can REALLY throw down in Street Fighter.

Smurfee McGee's idea is awesome and we will set it up very soon.

@jimbo,
I totally agree. It's going to be awesome to just get into some free matches with no stipulations. I'm glad to know that the fun won't stop just because the contest ends.
