Recommendations for an MMO
HawtPawkitHero | 8:39 PM on 11.14.2007 22 comments

I'm kinda looking around for a new MMO to play, but everything I find kind of sucks. I've tried just about everything (even second life **shudders**) and I'm not sure what to try next. I don't ask much from the DToid community, but hey - What MMO do you play?

MMOs I've tried:

WoW(quit last month, sold my account for 130 dollars)
Second Life (played it for about 5 minutes and then uninstalled it)
Hellgate London(That game just lacked SOMETHING, can't put my finger on what)
Knight Online (yuck)
Runescape (Pitiful....)
Guild Wars (Didn't like the feel of the deathmatches, it was kind of impossible for a newb)
Hero Online (Almost as bad as Knight Online)

I'm thinking about Ragnarok Online. Any opinions on that?

Did you go straight to the arenas in Guild Wars?
Playing through the campaign is surprisingly fun and will train you quite a bit.
If you like grindfests and pointless avatars then try out maple story

Well I've never played it but an MMO that looks nice called RF Online just went completely free. Might want to check it out.

Forgot Maple Story. Hated that game ALOT. And I played both the arenas and the singleplayer in GW. Didn't really enjoy it. I didn't like the instanced questing.
I think it really adds something to the game when you're around other people. It becomes a social environment.

I've tried to get RF online working for the past couple of weeks, but they are having HUGE issues with their patcher and such, and I cannot get it to work at all.

no Warcraft eh?

I guess it helps when you play with 3 others you know in real life.

try FF11 then, if ur into monster grinding. to me it had the best controls, best graphics, awesome Tactic fights, nothing is easy.

If you liked any FF game then its a step in to the no RL world of FF11.

Hellgate doesn't do it for you? Thats too bad, if you have a couple friends to quest with, Hellgate is awesome.

I played a shitload of Ragnarok Online on various private servers off and on for a few years. I'll probably end up hopping back on for a while in the future. It's not too bad, probably my favorite MMO as of now.

Space Cowboy Online is crazy awesome, but it's not so much an MMORPG as it is a Star Fox MMO (It's not really that similar to Star Fox, that's just the closest thing I can think of to it).

Right now I'm trying out an MMORPG called Trickster Online. I like it so far.

Reroll on my server. WoW has 9 million subscribers, so it has that social aspect you are looking for. Zul'aman just came out with patch 2.3, and Wrath of the Lich King is on the way... You know you want to do it.

FFXI is absolutely worthless, but if you want to give it a try GameStop is selling it for two bucks. It's a little trial disc that comes with all of the expansions and a 30 day pass.

My catgirl lasted twenty minutes. That's as long as it took to have one battle and regenerate my health. C'est la vie.

I just got an email about this one opening beta. Looks about on par for your average Korean crapfest, but who knows? Might be a diamond in the rough.

Ragnarok Online is free. Go find a good private server if you want to mess around, don't pay for the official version.

I played it for... I dunno almost a year or so on a private server. It's grindy and a bit buggy, like any Korean game, but I love the old sprite graphics, nice soundtrack, and the class variety is fun.

I'd recommend Anarchy Online if you enjoy detailed character development. AO still has the absolute best min/maxing I've ever seen, and the game community is largely filled with mature and intelligent players. It's worth mentioning that it has the far-future Sci-fi angle covered, magic = nanotechnology.
