Ever since I was a little shit, I've dreamed of a game, particularly an American football game, where instead of viewing all the action from a bird's eye view, you were down in the action, first person perspective. Something about watching all those little men running around hitting each other like ants was never really interesting to me for a video game, thus my hatred of sports games.

Madden 08.... BOOOORING!!!

Now, the idea of a first person sport's game has apparently been touched upon before, and with a little digging, I found what seems to be a game that apparently seems to have died before it got out the doors. 2k Sports' First Person Football. The last word of this game was heard in 2003, and nothing since, and has been pronounced dead by the general public. Sadly, this game was not American football, but it was Soccer, which probably had something to do with it's downfall. That, and EA's NFL deal sealed it's fate.

First Person Football... oh shi-

Another game that could be considered a sports game in the first person perspective is an Unreal Tournament mod called Deathball. I remember trying this out a long time ago, and though it wasn't all that great, it was an interesting take on a sports game.

Deathball 2.4 for UT2k4

It's a shame, because I could just imagine an awesome game where you start out in the quarterback's helmet, call a play, in the huddle, head to the line, receive the ball from the center, find your quarterback, pull the trigger and let it fly. The camera would follow the ball as it flies through the air and see if it hits the intended receiver or not, and if it does, get inside the helmet of the receiver and run for your life. The entire concept just sounds so much more fun then the conventional sports game that we've been playing for decades now.

The chances are that if there ever is another 2k Sports football game, it may have some sort of first person option, but for now, it seems we'll have to wait out the EA deal.

I like the idea. Might be difficult to accomplish but if someone could make it work well it would be ace. Rugby League from 1st person perspective- yes please!
Deathball looks good..hopefully someone from the PC community is hard at work for that for UTIII.
It would use an FPS engine, modified. That I can tell you.

They had a somewhat similar bit where you toss a football around at the beginning of 2015's game Men of Valor. It wasn't a game proper, but it was a demonstration of your concept.
@Y0j1mb0
Deathball was alright, it's just that it seemed like it was just thrown together, and it wasn't really thought out. It was really just utter chaos, and wasn't too much fun.
1st person football has been around since madden 07 and maybe 06

Cite your sources.
Acually, ESPN NFL 2K5 had a first person football feature, and that screen shot you have with the word "Williams" on it is from it. I know this because I still play this game every once in a while.

To me, that feature felt kinda tacked on, but at the same time I thought it was a decent idea. The problem with it was that it was hard to react to oncoming defenders, and it was hard to tell whether or not you were inbounds. Pretty much your whole vision was compromised because of the perspective and it felt very claustrophobic. Plus it was disorienting whenever you switched positions, because you really couldn't tell right away where you were, and by the time you figure it out, the play has started and you're late to react.

I mean, it was nice that they included it, just so I know what it felt like, but then I never spent any more time on it than I needed to get the "achievement."
If done right, it could be awesome. I think the trick would be to make you actually feel like you had a body. Similar to what Mirror's Edge is trying to accomplish. Add in some context specific moves to give you more control of the character and it could be awesome.

I almost feel like it would be wasted on any conventional sport though. They should create a new one that takes full advantage of it.
I have a dream!
