After all these years of success and great games is it time Nintendo should change the formula?
Before I get into this here is my opinion: I love Zelda games and think they are all great (apart from the second one, that kind of sucked) and do not want them to start changing them drastically.
The reason I have created this post is because earlier today I was with my friends watching Gametrailers retrospective videos because they are so well done and my friends hadn't seen them. After going through the Final Fantasy ones and been shouted at since they now wanted to play all the Final Fantasy series again we moved onto the Zelda franchise.
Only one of my two friends who was with me had played most of the Zelda games and enjoyed the series, my other friend is a much more "casual gamer" and finds it hard to get into games and finish a lot of them, after going through the retrospective my friend who likes Zelda games said that "Ocarina of Time is definitely the best Zelda game all the new ones are just trying to remake that games greatness, I wish they'd do something different because their not really getting any new fans like this" where as my other friend said "I don't really see why there is such a hype over Zelda, I can't see the attraction they should make a different one for the Wii otherwise I'm not going to bother with it and I doubt anyone new to Zelda will either".
After this I was pretty stunned but then thought back to many reviews I saw for Twilight Princess, that hadn't been such a huge hit even though I loved it to pieces even though it didn't beat Ocarina of Time for me (but most games can never beat their best title, e.g. Final Fantasy VII) I thought it was a great new Zelda game to add to the series. So perhaps it's just me who still loves the new Zelda titles because I'm such a huge Zelda fanboy but I don't think that my love for the series could make me think a boring game was enjoyable.
I take their opinion though and agree not really too much has changed over the years with Zelda games apart from the jump from 2d to 3d and so they could do a lot more than make me shake my hand to attack so I don't get fat (instead I get arthritis) and let me point to aim my bow at foes. Now don't look at me for ideas I can't see what could make these games much better other than maybe a deeper story in the next title, but I think I like the Legend, being reborn as the new hero collecting things to beat other things and eventually fighting Ganon with my new gained power that collecting things have given me. It gives me a nice simple story like the Mario and Sonic series do in a different way, it's simple brilliant and fun but it could always do with a bit more.
But what do you guys think? I'd love to hear from people who haven't tried Zelda (and have taken their fingers out of their ears and removed themselves from the cave in which they reside) and see if they think changing the game drastically would make them want to try it. I'm happy keeping the game the same as it is and just giving a few new items, locations and story per new game but I understand I'm not the majority of the public. Over to you . . .
I still love Zelda as it was a big part of my childhood (LoZ on NES was the first game I ever beat the age of 4) but I really do wish they would find some ways to shake it up a little bit. Come on, Nintendo; don't you always claim that you're so innovative yet you're scared to take a risk with your big franchises?
Link and Zelda should stay, the "find dungeon, get weapon, beat boss, repeat" formula should stay, but everything else must go.
They tried a series overhaul with the Wind Waker, but miss read what people want in a Zelda game. It wasn't sailing. It's exploring a huge, unpredictable world, and eventually feeling like it's you're home.
That could be done in sci-fi, steampunk, medieval or totally non-reality based setting. It doesn't have to always been in a pseudo Lord of the Rings world.
God NO, that's the last thing the series needs.
Thankfully nintendo has said that they are drastically changing the formula for the wii exclusive zelda. In fact, I woulnd't mind seeing a little less combat and character interaction, rather instead concentrating on exploration of VAST enviroments and solving puzzles in those enviromants. Im a sucker for games with desolate vibes.
You raise a pretty good point but I don't think it was sailing itself that was bad; it was the fact that they overabused sailing. The first time I sailed in WW I thought it was awesome but by the time I found out that I had to go sailing to find the pieces of the Triforce I was like, "Okay, whatever, let's just get this stupid shit over with so I can kill Ganondorf."
Essentially having 20+ dungeons, a huge overworld (bigger than Oblivion), a huge number of story sequences, more NPCs. Make it a massive adventure.
@EliteChief: NEVER IN HELL!
period
nough said
I think taking the Zelda franchise into a more "contemporary" time period or a not too distant dystopian society would be the best bet. Imagine a Zelda game set in a Blade Runner -esque setting.
I can see it now, Link trekking through an abandonned sewer system of the vast Hyrulian metropolis to get to the ruins of the Temple of Time. After finally getting to the Master sword chamber only to find it rusted and completely out of use, needing to find a new weapon to combat the evil dictator Ganondorf and his secret police....
Yeah, i know, never going to happen.
That was pretty awesome. The concept art looked so awesome. If that game was actually real, I'd run out and buy a Wii to play it.
Holy shit that is creepy, i swear i never saw that video
FFVI > FFVII
&
SNES > games
That is all.
But do you really think Nintendo would take Zelda in such a drastic and radically new direction? Zelda has always been a massive success financially and critically. I don't think they would really take such a huge risk. Remember how much of a shitstorm there was over Wind Waker's graphical design? I can't think of how much worse it would be if that future Zelda was real.
But alas, I can still dream of having a futuristic Zelda.
I'm one of those cheap whores who prefers his gaming experiences in hd.
The april fools video is actually something I would love to see turn to reality. The concept art shot with the guy (Link?) in the gas mask was interesting.
LOZ as it stands doesn't entice me anymore.
New franchises that don't suck please Nintendo.
After playing through roughly half of Mario Galaxy I realized most of Nintendo's games are all the same damn thing. I know for a fact Mario will save the princess after fighting through more waggle-laden levels and fighting Bowser. I also know in TP that I will undoubtedly fight lots of goblins and such to save the princess from Ganondorf. It's just the way those games are. And they give me no reason to play through them whatsoever.
I think they should remake Zelda more in the vein of Shadow of the Colossus. Then again, most games could be remade in that vein and I'd be a very happy boy.
I mean what kinda world is this where every town/capital city you come across you can walk thru in less then 5 minutes
There needs to be something different. Especially with the story. It feels almost like Mario. Zelda always needs saving.
The way that they limit thsmelves by reusing the same concepts is unique, but does seem to get old. Majora's Mask was a bit of a departure, but was also kind of a flop, no?
I've never really got into these games as a whole... it might have something to do with being a Sega kid. How about a new Govellius?
