Enter The Matrix - A Review by Lord Happyhead
Happyhead | 3:09 PM on 09.16.2008 7 comments

It currently seems to be a golden age for last gen games. I was amazed upon going in my local Gamestation to see so many PS2 and X-box games at ridiculously cheap prices, it was like the golden age of cheap Megadrive and Super NES games all over again.

I spent around £30 on around 15 games. One of these was 'Enter The Matrix' on X-box which cost me the crippling price of £1.99.

I liked the first Matrix film, I thought the 2nd and 3rd ones were complete dross, added to that the fact that film licences are usually god awful I had never had any incentive to want this game based on the 2nd film. I had heard that the game was pretty mediocre.

I found the game almost humiliatingly addictive, I just could not stop playing the damn thing! It is real fun, despite it's many faults. The combat is really simple, but really easy to do as well, as in the close range fighting anyway. 3 different buttons and lots of different combinations makes me a happy guy.

The game is a good use of a film licence in that it adds to the film rather than just tries to emulate the film. You take control of one of either 2 minor characters from the film - a bloke called Ghost, or some woman called Niobe. I had hoped that thier levels would be completly different from one another, but it seems that they are quite identical, and only vary in slight ways, too slight for me to bother finishing the game for a 2nd time.

For the game original scenes using the actors were filmed, all very good I guess if you like your Matrix stuff, though these additional scenes all look very low budget and usually just involve a few people standing around chatting.

There is more variation in the game than I was expecting. The game is at it's best when doing straight forward 3rd person action scenes. Also included to spice things up are sniper levels (sorta good), on rails shooting sections (bit too easy, but not bad) and driving levels (damn the driving controls are crap! Twitch mania). Also there is a cool few levels in the middle of the game which turn into some Buffy clone.

Onto the not so good stuff. The shooting of which there is a lot is not that great, I never actually looked into the options to se if it was possible, but auto aiming did my head in at times.

The locations are amazingly bland. It's like the team designing the game came up with a big list of possible locations and then chucked away all the ones which sounded like they may be interesting. So lots of time is spent in sewers, factorys and other generic and dull locations.

Greys and browns are the most prominent colour in the game, nearly everything is damn grey! I swear in places I just simply could not tell what were walls and what was the floor, it all melded into one so it looked like I was groping my way through some vortex dimension. One time on a driving level I kept driving into a solid wall as it closely resembled the road so much!

As much as it had it's faults you really cannot complain at £1.99. The game is surprisingly long, and is very addicitve to its fun fighting controls, so yeah, was cool enough.

This is game is surprisingly long, and very addictive to blind, dumb and deaf people. Even at it's price it's still too expensive. Horrible, horrible game.

At least with the Path of Neo, another Matrix game there was some fun to be had. This is just torture.

I loved playing this game. This game is by no means "good" but I really enjoyed playing through it. Maybe because I am such a Matrix freak and this game actually had some stuff that tied into the movies. Nothing major but enough for me :).

Also, The Path of Neo was fun times.

Was that the game where you could enter a sort of DOS program and enter "cheats"? God that game sucked.

Path Of Neo was much better.

Though, I wonder, do people still play The Matrix Online? I liked what I played when I used to play, and according to Wikipedia, the story got really badass.

(On a side note, YOU DON'T FUCKING KILL MORPHEUS, MORPHEUS FUCKING KILLS YOU!)

I played that alot. I think on Gamecube it was extra stupid because it had two discs.
Path of Neo was indeed better. and funner.

By curious coincidence 'Path of Neo' was another of the cheapo games I picked up, though havn't played that yet as am into Ominousura (whatever its called)at the mo.

I thought this game was fun anyway. Sure it's not a good game, but it still kept me playing right to the end.

This game doesn't need a review, it needs a fire to die in.

Some information about myself... Am 26 years old, live in Northampton, England, work as a internet administrator. Like horror films, rock music, zombie books etc etc.

My gamertag is Happyhead44, I really really want to play online games with friendly people,as I hate playing with strangers, I really feel like I'm missing out on online games due to this fact so am envious of all the people with thier fancy 'friend lists'!

Anyway my first console was a BBC Acorn Electron, I loved it, had hundreds of games for it. My fave games were the Repton ones, as well as Crazy Rider, and a game set in a underground base that I can't recall the title of. All good things come to an end though. One day the cassette box thing broke, rather then get a new one my parents chucked the whole thing away, and sold all the games to some dodgy bloke at a car boot sale for 5.

That was the end of my console owning days I assumed. My friends all had Master Systems, so we would spend hours playing Alex Kidd and Sonic, I thought the graphics and sound were unbelivable.

One birthday I find a big present, I open it to find surrounded by a legion of angels a Megadrive, a pure virgin Megadrive, with Altered Beast and Sonic. Before that day I had not even realised such a beast of power existed.

I become the cool kid in the neighbourhood with everyone wanting to play it. A year later a bitter war erupted, a enemy appeared on the horizon - the Super NES...

It was a bitter and bloody battle over the next few years. Some of my friends got Megadrives, while other friends were torn asunder and got Super NES's, a civil war of apocalyptic proportions. Fighting in the streets, gangs armed with Game Gears and Gameboys beating each other into bloody chunks, a literal Hell on Earth.

Looking back I think this is were my dislike of Nintendo appeared. Don't get me wrong, nowadays I love Nintendo games, I own a GBA, DS, Gamecube and Wii, but at the root of my being I will always love Sega more. To this day I dislike Mario. I think the games are amazing, but he himself I detest. I refuse to believe there is such a thing as a bad Sonic game, I just turn a blind eye to the bad ones...anyway I digress.

After that I brought a NES, sold it, though liked it, brought a Super NES (my fave game of all time is the Super NES version of Batman Returns), sold it to get a Playstation, sold that when I got a Playstation 2, brought an almighty Dreamcast (RIP), and got a N64 for Goldeneye. Swallowed my pride and brought a Xbox. The rest is history.

Now I own a Dreamcast, Wii, Xbox, 360, Playstation 2, Master System, Megadrive (my pride, over 200 games), GBA, DS, NES, Super NES, and a Gamecube (which I have misplaced somewhere).
