Doom - A review of the film by Lord Happyhead

I am known for having an awful taste in films, so forgive me. This is a review taken from my blogspot, but I wanted to know what peoples views are on the film, so have put it here as well.

I wasn't keen on seeing the Doom film, but I saw it for sale cheap and so brought it. The game is based mostly on Doom 3 and takes place in similer locations, and features similer looking computers and stuff. The film could have gone either in a horror vein, or in a meat head action style. The film goes for the later.

The plot concerns a group of UAC special forces who teleport to a Mars research facility to see why contact has been lost with a research team there. They soon discover death and mayhem and high octane shooty shananigins.

The cast is quite cool. The best character is Richard Blake (he had a titchy part in Batman Begins) as Portman, who is a fantastic shady character, his eyes and teeth just seem to glow! Female lead is Rosamund pike (from Die Another Day), also Dexter Fletcher (of Gamesmaster fame!) has a secondary character part, and of course main character is The Rock.

Lots of the games weapons are used, including the chainsaw, and the amazing BFG (with it's proper name uttered by The Rock) For some reason the BFG shoots out a blue projectile rather than the games green, but never mind.

One annoying factor is the explanation for the demons. In the games the demons are literally that - Demons from Hell. In the film though there is quite a few religious references, the monsters are discovered to be a result of genetic tampering. Lots of zombies feature in the film, zombies are the best, so that made me happy.

Towards the end there is a 5 minute section literally shown in first person. Like the game you just see a gun running around corridoors shooting seven shades of hell out of numerous enemies while a imitation Doom song blares over it. This was a cool nod to the games the film was influenced by. This occurs again in the fantastic end credit sequence, this time with some great Nine Inch Nails as musical accompiment. The film is unashamably action oriantated, but a fun time.

Phantom Spaceman

I quite enjoyed it. Great mindless action movie. I'm actually considering getting an HD-DVD player for this and a few other exclusives.

The only great thing about that movie was that at the theater my girlfriend, at the time, gave me a mouth-hug.

I did enjoy it, for all it's stupid action. I think it's the only vidya game movie that actually did not shit on the game it's based on.

Worth watching once, enjoyable, and it does not pretend to be something it is not.

Definitely one of those movies that you go in with low expectations, and thus end up enjoying immensely. I was actually surprised at how entertaining the FPS part was as well.

Just like the Mortal Kombat movie, there is entertainment to be had with DOOM. I dig it.

I enjoyed the special guest appearance by the pinky demon in the FPS section too, that was probably the best part of the film in my opinion.

I absolutely loved Doom. I was a little bummed about the PC'ness of the games plot though. Where's my demons from hell!?

Well I'm glad I wasn't the only one who enjoyed it, as Robotbebop said, you go in with low expectations and so enjoy it more as it's not as bad as you would assume it to be.

Some information about myself... Am 26 years old, live in Northampton, England, work as a internet administrator. Like horror films, rock music, zombie books etc etc.

My gamertag is Happyhead44, I really really want to play online games with friendly people,as I hate playing with strangers, I really feel like I'm missing out on online games due to this fact so am envious of all the people with thier fancy 'friend lists'!

Anyway my first console was a BBC Acorn Electron, I loved it, had hundreds of games for it. My fave games were the Repton ones, as well as Crazy Rider, and a game set in a underground base that I can't recall the title of. All good things come to an end though. One day the cassette box thing broke, rather then get a new one my parents chucked the whole thing away, and sold all the games to some dodgy bloke at a car boot sale for �5.

That was the end of my console owning days I assumed. My friends all had Master Systems, so we would spend hours playing Alex Kidd and Sonic, I thought the graphics and sound were unbelivable.

One birthday I find a big present, I open it to find surrounded by a legion of angels a Megadrive, a pure virgin Megadrive, with Altered Beast and Sonic. Before that day I had not even realised such a beast of power existed.

I become the cool kid in the neighbourhood with everyone wanting to play it. A year later a bitter war erupted, a enemy appeared on the horizon - the Super NES...

It was a bitter and bloody battle over the next few years. Some of my friends got Megadrives, while other friends were torn asunder and got Super NES's, a civil war of apocalyptic proportions. Fighting in the streets, gangs armed with Game Gears and Gameboys beating each other into bloody chunks, a literal Hell on Earth.

Looking back I think this is were my dislike of Nintendo appeared. Don't get me wrong, nowadays I love Nintendo games, I own a GBA, DS, Gamecube and Wii, but at the root of my being I will always love Sega more. To this day I dislike Mario. I think the games are amazing, but he himself I detest. I refuse to believe there is such a thing as a bad Sonic game, I just turn a blind eye to the bad ones...anyway I digress.

After that I brought a NES, sold it, though liked it, brought a Super NES (my fave game of all time is the Super NES version of Batman Returns), sold it to get a Playstation, sold that when I got a Playstation 2, brought an almighty Dreamcast (RIP), and got a N64 for Goldeneye. Swallowed my pride and brought a Xbox. The rest is history.

Now I own a Dreamcast, Wii, Xbox, 360, Playstation 2, Master System, Megadrive (my pride, over 200 games), GBA, DS, NES, Super NES, and a Gamecube (which I have misplaced somewhere).
