Profile: I'm a longtime gamer, and started playing video games during the transition from the NES to the SNES. Although I like retro games, I play mostly newer games on the 360. Still, my favourite gaming memories are from all-nighters filled with Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Smash Bros. in the late 90s.
I'm looking for a career in public service, politics or other fields where research and writing are critical. Though, the closer it's related to games, the better.
I make videos, animated gifs, podcasts and all kinds of random stuff in my spare time. I'm also trying to develop my own gaming website (details coming eventually).
Systems: NES, Super NES, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo 64, Wii, Sega Genesis, Playstation 2, Xbox 360, PC, Colecovision (my dad's). Also, many other systems (including arcade) that I not emulate.
Some Favourite Games: Retro (NES-SNES eta): Megaman 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Sonic 3, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Robotrek, Illusion of Gaia, Megaman X, Lufia 1 and 2, Strider, Metal Slug, Twilight Zone pinball.
Retro Limbo (N64 era): Ogre Battle 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mystical Ninja starring Goemon, Goemon's Great Adventure, Descent: Freespace.
Modern: Halo: Reach, Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Tales of Vesperia, Fallout 3, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime 1-3, Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam, Hearts of Iron II, Europa Universalis III, Civilization IV.
Every Friday, I present some video game-related puzzles that involve music, images, or wordplay. Sorry for missing last week (for the handful of you who care). The ever-popular (at least with Knutaf) Gamebusters is back, along with some good ol' reversed music.
One more week to go, and Batthink still has a strong, but not insurmountable, lead. Maybe things will be shaken up this week.
Bad Mr. Frosty - Clayfighter (Batthink), Megalodoth - Final Fantasy VI (odber), Iceman - Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Blorp), Ice Man - Mega Man 1 (Blorp), Yeto - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Blorp).
Gamebusters
#1) "Hello, dark elf. Betting on a sports team getting a low score? = Hi Drow, the under? = Hydro Thunder. (knutaf)
#2) "This harsh Commander just got promoted." Captain cruel. = Kaptain K. Rool. (knutaf)
#3) "The monarch who stays at Destructoid's favorite PAX hotel." = King of Red Lion = King of Red Lions. (knutaf)
#4) What's in common? Boats/nautical theme (knutaf)
This week's theme is bad games. Games that are both famous and infamous for their...baddery.
PUZZLE #1: Reversed Music
I'm not going to give any hints for these, since they're generally easier. With bad games, they're either well-known or far too obscure; I balanced things towards the former.
PUZZLE #2: Gamebusters
I think you know the score by now: cryptic/confusing phrases that have a double meaning from a video game. For example: "The black bird won't shoot his gun." = Crow no trigger = Chrono Trigger
#1) A cloth belt is used in avarice as well. (Game, starting with A)
#2) These Metroid Prime 2 creatures teamed with Megaman's creator (Character, starting with L)
#3) The Bundy patriarch takes a tumble, and he phones a professional. (Game, starting with A)
#4) What's the common link between those three clues? (Hint: It has to do with Destructoid)
Overall rules for this week's puzzles: 1. Since this is the last week for this season, you can answer as many as you want! That way, there's a chance that someone can make a comeback. 2. If someone answers a question, and you think that you have a more precise answer (the specific version of the game, or the specific level where you hear the music), you can try and "steal" that answer.
Good Luck!
P.S. Seeing as next week will be the 20th edition my VGMT, I'll be giving away some actual prizes again! Stay tuned!
Actually, it's even worse. I had the three that you got fairly quickly, but wanted to go for the Skullamanjaro instead of cashing in what I had. Too risky, too risky.
Sorry, Knutaf. You're pretty good at these, though. Lightning was from FFXIII, so that doubles my expectation that question four was right. :OD
Guncannon, can you teach me how to make the mind-teaser uploads for Youtube? I was thinking that, if I managed to win this season, I'd sit out the next season (to give others a chance) until the next prize mind-teaser. I could then spend some time on making a set of questions that you could use for one or two weeks a season. How about it?
The Youtube videos are made in Sony Vegas. The audio is reversed (or other effects applied) in Audacity, and then it's just a matter of throwing in text and graphics.
If you can think up some new music puzzles to do, that would be great. My problem is that the VG music I consider "well-known" might not be for everyone. A different perspective would help. And any creative Gamebusters would be great too!
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Puzzle 1, question 2 is Deadly Premonition's Life is Beautiful (aka the Whistle Theme).
Puzzle 2, question 1 is Assassins Creed 2 (A-sash-in-greed-too). Question 3 is Alpha Protocol (Al-fall-pro-to-call).
Therefore, I'm guessing the theme (question 4) are that the games (and one with the character in) have been given low review scores by Jim Sterling?
Puzzle 2 #2: Lightning

1st is Cheetahmen!
5th looks like the cutscene from the Zelda game on CDi (but which one?)
