Age: 23
Location: Ottawa, ON, Canada.

Profile: I'm a longtime gamer, and started playing video games during the transition from the NES to the SNES. Although I like retro games, I play mostly newer games on the 360. Still, my favourite gaming memories are from all-nighters filled with Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Smash Bros. in the late 90s.

I'm looking for a career in public service, politics or other fields where research and writing are critical. Though, the closer it's related to games, the better.

I make videos, animated gifs, podcasts and all kinds of random stuff in my spare time. I'm also trying to develop my own gaming website (details coming eventually).

Systems: NES, Super NES, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo 64, Wii, Sega Genesis, Playstation 2, Xbox 360, PC, Colecovision (my dad's). Also, many other systems (including arcade) that I not emulate.

Some Favourite Games:
Retro (NES-SNES eta): Megaman 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Sonic 3, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Robotrek, Illusion of Gaia, Megaman X, Lufia 1 and 2, Strider, Metal Slug, Twilight Zone pinball.

Retro Limbo (N64 era): Ogre Battle 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mystical Ninja starring Goemon, Goemon's Great Adventure, Descent: Freespace.

Modern: Halo: Reach, Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Tales of Vesperia, Fallout 3, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime 1-3, Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam, Hearts of Iron II, Europa Universalis III, Civilization IV.

Music Mind Teasers Vol. 8: Back, with Cutbacks, Edition!
Guncannon | 3:00 PM on 05.07.2010 10 comments

In this Friday feature, I take several pieces of music from different video games and mess them up somehow (like playing in reverse). Your job is to figure out what songs they are and what games they're from.

More and more people are being added to the list! Odber's still the one to beat. Remember, you don't have answer just one at a time.

1. odber: 11
2. Batthink : 7
3. EnoSachran: 4
AlphaDeus: 4
4. Bulkmailer: 3
vApathyv: 3
5. Anonymouse: 1
Blorp: 1
Cataract: 1
Changston: 1
Wryguy: 1
etirflita: 1

Here's the answers to the puzzle from a couple weeks ago, and who got each right. People are getting them all right pretty much every week now, which means either they're too easy, or you guys just know your game music!

#1) Easy: Sonic & Knuckles, Mushroom Hill Zone (vApathyv)
#2) Medium: Donkey Kong Country, Overworld and Bonus Stage (I messed this one up (not noticing that it was a mashup from SSBB), so both odber and Blorp got it right)
#3) Hard: Final Fantasy VI, Magic House (AlphaDeus)
#4) Hard: Megaman 3, Credits (aka Protoman's Theme) (Cataract)
#5) WTF: Space: 1999, Season 1 Opening (Batthink)

I'm back from visiting my family, so I can go back to doing this feature that some people might care about. I've decided to try out a new form of puzzle for this week: "Cutbacks". While playing around with SPC files (SNES music tracks) in Super Jukebox, I noticed that you can mute individual sound channels. By doing so, I can cut out or simplify the main melody of a track, making it more difficult to recognize. It tests one's ability to notice the individual pieces that make up a song. For this trial run, I've only chosen well-known games and, obviously, they're all from the SNES (sorry, Sega Addicts!).

The tracks run about 30 seconds each. Here are the clues:

#1) Easy: Don't get lost in these woods.
#2) Medium: Not to break your air-filled globule, but...
#3) Medium: The world might be wrecked, but keep looking for your buddies.
#4) Hard: CHOOSE!
#5) Super Hard: Bear in mind, this is a very simplified version.

Good Luck!

Would it have been too difficult if you had muted all channels but one? Care to try it for next week?
