...and bought a PS3. You see my 360 has been out of town for a few days and I just got...bored..and one thing led to another. Next thing I know I'm plugging my new PS3 into my 360's ethernet cable slot.
So yeah, I bought a PS3 yesterday since my 360 is on it's way to be repaired and I needed something to play to get me through the day, and my desperate time of need. Sure I could have bought a Wii and saved myself $400, but they're not as easy to find, and after looking at a list of games, I realized there was absolutely nothing that would keep my attention for the rest of the day (let alone the month it will take to get my 360 back). Sorry Zelda fans, I am not one of you. It's just not my thing. And I already own/played Resident Evil 4 on PS2 and refuse to buy it again.
Not that the PS3's selection is much better. Remember, I already own a 360 so I already have 85% of the games I'd want out of PS3's library. Motorstorm looked cool but I don't want to be stuck with just a racing game. Then there was Resistance but the last thing I needed was another FPS. So I settled on Ninja Gaiden Sigma since I never really played the Xbox version.
Once I got home, I set up everything and plugged it into my monitor at home via an HDMI to DVI cable and behold. No Fucking picture. I knew it was on only because I could hear the clicks of my controller going through the menu and I was like WTF?!? After digging around online I found out that my monitor needed to be HDCP compliant to work through DVI. Well fuck. Luckily it came with component cables, so I just decided to plug it into my regular tv and hook it up to the internet with my 100ft ethernet cable (yes, 100ft).
So it works fine through there, I go through the infamously long system update and at the end, it tells me to plug my controller via USB and press the PShome button. I do. Nothing happens. I unlpug it, plug it back in, and press furiously. Nothing happens. I know the controller works since I used it to start the fucking update! Needless to say I was super pissed at this point and had to search again online for a solution.
Turns out that it's a common problem for the PS3 to not recognize the controller after the update and the worst part is that even if you turn it off, it will take you back to the same screen when you turn it back on. The only two solutions were to wait and see if your controller was charged up enough, or buy a second controller and plug it in and they'll both work for whatever reason. I let the controller charge for 2 1/2 hours and it still didn't work so I took my irritable ass to Wal-Mart to get another one and everything was fine after that.
So finally the games. I downloaded a bunch of stuff off the store and a bunch of demos. If Resistance is anything like the demo, thank god I didn't buy it. Rumble may be "last gen" technology but it adds so much to the experience when playing FPSs. I wasn't that impressed with eh graphics either but then again, I was playing on a SDTV. The downloadable games I got on the other hand were pretty cool. Stardust HD was pretty fun, Calling all Cars was cool, and once I got the controls down for Flow I got really into it. Of course Ninja Gaiden was awesome as well.
Thus begins my bumpy foray into the PS3. I don't regret buying it since I know there are some cool games coming out later but if you have a 360 already, you really don't need one, and if you don't have either, I'd still have to say the 360 is a better choice since the game selection is so much larger and there's about 10x more demos to download online. Either way, I just needed to vent about this so if you actually read it all, you win an invisible cookie.

You also forgot to mention, the Wii is a piece of shit and not worth buying right now even at 250 dollars.
hmm.. not a good start, maybe a bad omen?
Return it, buy my Wii, beat Guitar Hero for me, everyone wins invisible cookies.
Also, cocks. lol
Wii is still just about the best if you have people over. Other than that though, meh. Wii360 for thee win.
I didn't have any problems with mine. It registered the controller just fine. Rumble is sorely missed though.
Motorstorm is pretty fun online, but a shallow single player. It's very arcadey, but I like that in a racing game.
Resistance is actually pretty cool, but I don't have a 360. PSWii here.
Yah my 360 just red ringed on me... I'm going to send it out this week. I'm considering blowing 600 dollars on my computer instead though. Get it up to 'snuff for Crysis.
@Hoygeit
I'm looking forward to Warhawk, LittleBigPlanet, and Everyday Shooter. Unreal Tournament 3 might be cool too. Those are all coming out this year right?
@Bhive01
Yeah, I'm sure Motorstorm online is pretty fun. If I get another game for it soon, that will probably it.
Don't forget Heavenly Sword... If you like that sort of game.
@HawtPawkitHero
I almost considered that too, since it would be easier to hide from my girlfriend when she gets home today. It's going to be hard to explain to her why I dropped $600 on a PS3 while she was gone for a day and a half.
....does that make me whipped?
Microsoft might as well be selling ad space on Live for PS3 and wii. ** Stop playing our console and go play one of these!!! (We're retarded!!!) **
Tasty cookies.

wtf
Lol that's what you get for fanboy fueled comments on Dtoid. Didn't you hear? They implemented the new technology for it last night.
Oh yeah, Heavenly Sword is out in November right? I'm not as jazzed for it as everyone else, but it does look cool. Especially since I'm done with God of War 2.
hows the ps2 upscaling look?
Sorry I am just a little heated because my brother's 360 just died. So, naturally, he is also considering a PS3 and I just can't get over how fucking wonderful Microsoft has made gaming for everyone.
I think I might get a new gaming PC, because at least then I will know that my processor won't be duct taped to the motherboard.
and dude, if you were whipped, you wouldn ta bought it. now if you take it back, on the other hand...
@Bahamut
I haven't tried it yet, though I think I'll pop FF12 or Odin Sphere in just to see. It's hooked up to my standard def tv right now though so it probably won't make a difference.
There's something called a Gameswitch that would let me hook it up to my non HDCP monitor through the DVI but I can't find it for sale anywhere.
@GuitarAtomik: you can connect with component cables through a VGA box, or so I read on the internets. Might be cheaper than that other thing?
I picked up a PS3 the other day as well. I didn't have any troubles with it, except that I always seem to forget that in their menu system, when you want to get the the next screen you need to hit 'right' or 'left'. I kept ending up stuck trying to figure out how to advance (It made me feel somewhat retarded)
I picked up Resistance. I own Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black (beat em), didn't want a sole racing game, and didn't really see anything other than Resistance. In the end it was a good game. Nothing spectacular.
This is also my first Playstation system, so I plan on picking up some games I have missed in the past (Already picked up Shadow of the Colossus, Odin Sphere, and a Ratchet & Clank game)
I haven't regretted buying it yet, just waiting on some new games now.
@Professor Pew
I'll have to look into that. I wonder if it still outputs in hD though.
What I could find was:

http://www.totalconsole.com/servlet/the-207/XCM-1080p-VGA-box/Detail
That XCM VGA box can probably be found for cheaper on modding-sites like divineo.com. It all sounds like an expensive workaround to me though... if only monitors could be flashed to 'look' HDCP compliant?
@Lemon
I give you 3 chances to guess his gamer tag and the first 2 don't count.
SLUT!
"I set up everything and plugged it into my monitor at home via an HDMI to DVI cable and behold. No Fucking picture."
Yeah... not the console's fault.
