So I was playing through Splosion Man, and I got to thinking about humor in videogames, and why it seems as though funny games are good, and games that try to be funny fail and aren't. Most often suck.
Lets use a recent game and an old game for examples.
Recent funny game: Splosion man.
I've played through the single player and the multiplayer. I enjoyed every moment of it and found it constantly funny, even when I had already seen what was happening.
All of Splosion man's animations, his sounds, the joy he's having from sploding, they all have a distinct humor to them that not many games can pull off.
Splosion Man is funny and it seems effortless that it is. Which is a key to humor. Don't let people know you're trying to be funny, like BMX XXX.
Crappy not funny old game: BMX XXX
Get it?! Pimps and humping pink poodles are funny!
Lord this game is horrible, but I was suckered in with the promise of boobies... The boobies were not worth the price of my soul. The writing was stupid, crass, unfunny, not creative in the slightest. How can you try so hard for humor and not even amuse an at the time teenage boy that just wants boobs?
Granted these games are in different leagues, but I just wanted to use them as examples. I can't think of a bad game that uses humor in a good way, and I can't really think of good games that try to be funny that fail.
And I've been trying to figure out why that is.
Could it be that companies that make good games have more creative people, and those people are naturally funnier?
So I wanted to bring this subject to you all, and maybe see if there is are funny crappy games out there (intentionally funny, I know Two Worlds is funny for all the wrong reasons), or a great game that fails at humor. Why do you think Tim Schafer's games are always fun to play as well as funny as balls. Why not funny and kinda meh to play, is it his oversite? Or other talented people just get sucked in towards him?
Also, I wanted an excuse to post this Video, if you haven't beat Splosion Man yet, just pass it by, but if you have and haven't seen this... Enjoy...
Humor in games seems to be difficult to nail down because many games don't really have any real grasp on character building. Some games, like 'Splosion Man, manage to buck the norm by having a strong character out of the gate to work with. Additionally, I found Uncharted to have some great "Ha!" moments thanks to the timing and delivery of the voice acting.
Really though, if you want to see a great marriage of character building and humor, you should really replay Conker's Bad Fur Day on N64 (or the Xbox port, alternatively). It's aged extremely well. And if you have never played it, you have a homework assignment.
A game I always thought was funny was Fur Fighters on the Dreamcast. Very under-appreciated. The unintentionally funny games are the best. If I'm playing NHL with a cousin or friend, I'll normally be laughing the entire time. Same goes with Left 4 Dead and LittleBigPlanet now that I think about it.
I can't really think of any bad game that was funny by mistake or a good game that failed at being funny either. But speaking of humourous games, Fat Princess finally drops today!!
Little Big Planet always makes me smile! It's a very subtle humour... but the expressions on sackboy/girl's face or the ability to slap or pull someone is just so cute and funny!!
Sacred 2 is another game with sporadic things that make me laugh!
I think comedy on games should be more widely applied. Splosion Man is a brilliant work of a game that was full of humor without trying too hard like the silver days of the 90s.
With all the SERIOUS games and GORY BADASSERY from this new generation, there needs to be a better spin on things. Thinking back then there were only few games that were really funny and most of them were point-n-click adventures like Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle or Leisure Suit Larry.
I think the creators of Splosion Man deserve the rights of Earthworm Jim.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

Good topic by the way!!

Good write up!
Also, Fun Fact: On the reverse side of BMX XXX's cover was a picture of a hot pin up chick.

Freakazoid.
Some of the things he says, and a few of his run movements are straight out of a Freakazoid episode.
