And the first person to say "a chromosome" get's iPunched in the eBalls.
I had been eagerly anticipating this game ever since I heard Topher mention it during the schmup episode of RFGO. So I downloaded the demo today and gave it a whirl and I'm sad to say I was a little bit underwhelmed. It's not that it was BAD, it is just that the first level was very "meh" to me.
Is it just another case of a pretty average first level in an amazing game? I remember I played the first level of Metal Slug 3 and I had the exact same feelings as I am having with this game, only to find out that levels 2-5 were totally awesome and the first level really did not tell you anything at all about the quality of the game. I'm thinking this is more than likely the case, but I just want to be reassured by someone who has played the game.
How do I tell if hits register? It looked like a few enemy shots went right through my ship, then a few shots later I heard the orgasmic yelp of our heroine and lost a life. Was my mind playing tricks on me, or is the ship able to take a few shots before losing a life? If that is the case, why isn't there an on-screen shield indicator or something like that?
Is the extremely narrow screen something that I will get used to? Because right now it feels somewhat like peering at the game through a picket fence.
I think if someone can tell me that the game really picks up after level 1 I will go ahead and buy it, but if its more of the same for levels 2-5 then I won't bother. I've recently become reacquainted with shmups for the first time since the NES days, mostly thanks to reading this site, so I really want to enjoy this one. I am just having a little trouble seeing what is so special about it. Someone out there tell me I am wrong.
Oh and one more thing: what's with the constant panty shots? Seriously...
My issue was with the pretty average first level and not understanding the damage system.
The narrow screen may be to mimic the original arcade game but it just seems stupid to play a game on 1/4th of the screen.
I think Ikaruga will be out on XBL eventually and IMHO it's a much better game.
have you, you know, used ships as shields? that helps if youre a pussy
dont play if you think its gay.
All I have to do is just watch a youtube video of Ikaruga and I know that it is an awesome game. I really don't get that with this one.
I could be totally wrong, I'm just seeing if anyone out there can convince me that my first impressions were false.
I tried the anchor thing a few times. It was neat-o I guess. But I'm not a pussy so I won't be using it. I'm a man's man, man. I chop wood with my dick. Roar.
Welcome.
1. Triggerheart is not a traditional shmup. Using the anchor unit is how you play the game. Not using it is like playing Call of Duty without using a gun. It doesn't mean you're manly, it means you're doing it wrong.
2. What Xelotath said. The screen is small because the game is (more or less) a vertical shooter. If it bothers you, tate your tv.
3. The "damage system" works like this: If a bullet touches you, you die. o_O
4. If you didn't enjoy the demo, I'd say this game is really not for you. The next 4 levels are only going to get harder and more manic, and as you progress it becomes quite literally impossible to get through them without using the anchor.
5. You're the guy who thought Space Giraffe was awesome, right?
My remark about not using the anchor was a joke in response to chop's joke. I don't actually believe that using it makes me less of a man.
The damage system threw me off because when a bullet touches me, I often did not die. Another poster above cleared it up for me when they said that the bullet has to actually hit your 'core' for it to cause any damage. Any bullets passing through your armor or whatever don't cause damage, which isn't something I'm used to.
I didn't hate the demo, I just didn't get what the hoopla was about I guess. I was hoping it was like Metal Slug 3 where the first level was pretty average but the game really picks up in levels 2-5. The fact that it gets MORE challenging is a good thing because I didn't see much challenge in level 1.
Yes, I really like Space Giraffe. It's far from the best game ever, but it is abstract, unique, challenging and pretty fun once you get the hang of things. Pretty well 4 things I love to see in games. But by the same token I can totally see how someone would be repulsed by it. And most people are. Which is cool.
Thanks for the response.
The game isn't really a shmup. Not technically. Yes, you fly around and sometimes shoot at things, but 90% of the game is learning to use that anchor. Check out RetroforceGO this week, I'll address all of this stuff in detail. :)
me personally, I think trial version of bullet hell shumps do nothing as the first stage never prooves anything outside the fact you can play it.
Also I feel you on the whole screen size thing, Ive got a 19" lcd HDTV and the only way for me to have a chance is to sit within inches of the screen. I tried rotating my tv and that worked and I was amazed by how big the tv felt, but I soon got nerveous about how much I just spent on the TV, so I turned it back.
Also I hoe Ikaruga come out pretty soon, because I played my gamecube version of it and it looks terriblly fuzzy on an HDTV (atleast mines). I cant wait to play Ikaruga in 720p!
and the anchor, totally awesome.
Yeah SR388 I'm working with a 19" LCD monitor, so it's probably more of an issue for people like us than others. But if I sit really close it's not that bad I guess, hah.
And yeah Shin that's what I'm thinking too.
Sincere thanks to everyone who threw in their 2 cents.
