Decided to try out the new DmC demo so I could finally have stronger reason for why I dislike the game. Hoo boy was it an experience. (Below the videos are my extended thoughts.)
EDIT: I had an extra thought I forgot to add below.

I've been apprehensive towards the "Devil may Cry" reboot since that original trailer. Part of the reason is obviously because I have a preexisting image of what the series and protagonist are, but it only got worse as more information about the gameplay seeped out. Honestly, I'm not a hardcore DMC fan. I've only gotten halfway through DMC 3 and 4 due to gaming ADD (so many releases, so little time) and didn't like the original DMC's gameplay (played DMC3 first). So it's not like I completely blinded myself with a preconceived notion of what I expect from DMC games (though I'm sure it looks like that in the videos).

A question I keep hearing when I (or ANYONE) voice my distaste for the game is "Well if it wasn't a Devil May Cry game, would you still hate on it?" Honestly, after playing the demo, yes, I would. I just really don't like the mechanics and it feels unfinished and lazy. Hell, it would STILL be compared to Devil May Cry just because it's trying to be a part of that genre. The only reason I even played the demo was because it is associating itself with Devil May Cry. If it was an original IP, I honestly wouldn't give a fuck about it. It'd be completely off my radar despite being a Ninja Theory game--a company who I don't feel has a strong enough track record to pull my attention the way a company like Naughty Dog does.

I never bothered with Heavenly Sword because of the complaints I hear of it's length and I only played Enslaved because the story and characters interested me. Based on the snippets of Heavenly Sword I played in demos, it seems alright, but it felt like it was trying too hard to follow in God of War's shadow rather than be it's own game. The gameplay in Enslaved was just crap. Combat was repetitive and had no depth despite them implying it would, and the "platforming" aspects were almost as automated as Prince of Persia '06. I'm honestly only going to play the full version of DmC because I'm curious about what they're going to do to the story (though what the demo showed me is rather disheartening).

So what exactly don't I like about DmC? Well, first and foremost, I really don't like the combat. I mention at a couple points in the videos that Dante feels sluggish, and that's because after every attack, he pauses. Times when I tried to shift from attacks to a dash, the dash didn't come out and I got clobbered by an attack. I get that the game's combat is probably trying to push thinking more than almost blindly stringing combos together, but (here comes the comparison) when you look at older Devil May Cry games and it's spiritual successor Bayonetta, they embrace the idea of attack cancelling and smoothly stringing combos together while retaining high difficulty. Basically, it seems to me that Ninja Theory is making DmC "difficult" by giving players this sluggish combat and not including a damn lock-on function. There were so many cases of me trying to string aerial combos into gunfire only to have Dante start SHOOTING AT SOMEONE ELSE (happens in the video).

I also don't like the visual style of the game. I dig the idea of environments breaking apart in Limbo, but it got old pretty fast (probably because of all the trailers hammering this aspect). I also just don't like the look of the characters. The demons are demons, so whatever, but the characters just look bland to me. Dante looks boring, Sparda looks ridiculous, and the villain also looks bland. I'm sure he has some secret demon form they'll show at the end of the game, but everything about the character designs just looks... meh.

I know people like to say "well the old Dante was generic Animu bullshit" but I think that's a load of shit. He wasn't the most "unique"-looking character, but at least those characters had an interesting style and had personality simply in their appearance. People in DmC just look BORING to me. Before people start showing me concept art and whatnot from the game, let me say that concept art does look nice, but in the actual GAME ITSELF, none of that shows. It all just ends up washed out and bland.

Another issue I have is the writing and Dante as a character. The dialog in the demo is atrocious. Old Dante's cheesy lines were really for more than just humor. They showed us his wit--something I see nothing of in this new Dante. I understand he's supposed to be a rebellious youth, but I don't find myself rooting for him. He just comes off as an unintelligent dick. When a character goes from quips like "Flock off, feather face" to "You ugly sack of shit," there's a problem. I'm not saying he can't be a dick, but he should at least be a likable one. Look at Die Hard. McClain is kind of a dick. There's a reason why he lost his wife and his daughter has issues with him. But despite that, the audience still likes and roots for him. He makes witty retorts, snappy catchphrases, and does generally badass things. Sure, he has a lovable "trying to make things right" angle with his family, but I think his entertaining personality is what really wins people over.

I think part of the issue is defining what is "cool." Tameem thinks the old Devil May Cry games aren't cool. He thinks his vision is. I disagree. I think his style is attempting to be edgy with vomiting larvae women and come off as cool by throwing "fuck" and "shit" around like they're confetti. Yeah, I curse too, but I'm not trying to be "cool" or "hip." I just think it's funny. To me, over-the-top zaniness is cool and a character that can embrace cheesiness is endearing and funny. Everyone has their own vision of what's "cool," and the problem is Tameem doesn't acknowledge that. He boasts that what he thinks is cool is what we ALL think (or should think) is cool.

Okay, I think I'll stop rambling here and just let the videos do the rest of my talking. Hope you enjoy 'em.
