I plunked down $40 for this Gamestop exclusive game yesterday, and while I don't have any substantial comments on the gameplay so far, I feel I'm qualified enough to let you know how terrible the voice acting is.
Make sure your volume is a little lower than normal, unless you want passers-by to have bloody ears.
Hyoma's not too bad, but everyone else...?
How does this shit happen these days? I think this is officially a worse dubbing than Castle Shikigami 2. And I didn't think that was possible. Yoichi sounds like they hired a guy with only half a jaw, and then fed him hot soup while he tried to talk. God, it's just...completely awful.
Luckily, GS forked over the cash to keep the licensing on the Japanese voice track, so you can switch over and play the game that way. So if you like Gungrave, Shadow Hearts, Growlanser, or (god forbid) other Idea Factory games, and like the idea of an SRPG where they're all in the same game together; it's still worth it to buy, far as I'm concerned. Just don't start the game without entering the options menu and changing over those voices!
Bad voice acting has always been around, I mean since the days of Sega CD. I just don't let stuff like that bother me anymore, considering there's been too many cases of it. Honestly, now that I think about it, I don't think it ever really bothered me. I mean a good game is a good game, sure, a good game with good dubbing is even better. But sometimes the game is so good the voice acting doesn't really get in the way ala Resident Evil. Lol.
Though it's always cool for them to throw in the Japanese track since weeaboos just love to whine about stuff like that.
Ah yes. I remember my grandpa said that quite frequently. THIS IS IT! THIS IS IT! OH GOD THIS IS IT! I LOVE YOU!
And this is why you don't go to community colleges to get cheap voice actors. This is just horrible. Scratch the college thing, he must've went to a high school Epecial Ed English class to get this talent.
This is like in high school when they made us read Shakespeare out loud. They assign everybody a character and make you read through it. This is worse though.
"We know eeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyytttttttthhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnggggggggg about the mmmmmooooooouuuuuunnnnnnnnttttttain behind the school."
I picked this up as well I just hadn't had a chance to try it out yet. I just pretty much assume that most of the games like this will have horrible voice acting, though I still own hundreds of them. :P
@AngelsDontBurn: For sure it's been around for a long time, the question I asked was why is it STILL this bad? I figured the gaming industry has grown up enough that Publishers generally know they can't really pull this shit anymore without internet backlash of some extent or another.
Shizuku's voice actor is likely a bubblegum-blonde snapping her gum and saying "I know!" into a cell phone while on break. Also she carries a tiny dog in her purse.
The same thing happened in Luminous Arc. I turned off the dialog within five seconds.
Seriously. *I* could do a better dub job...and that goes for both the female AND male characters.
Here's hoping that they'll have the option for the Japanese voices in Luminous Arc 2.
By the way, can anyone recommend any good SRPGs for the DS other than Luminous Arc? I looked at Rondo of Swords, but was somewhat leery of the "It's a new type of SRPG!" admonitions plastered all over the box.
@Oni no Tenshi: Rondo is pretty decent, and it certainly is different, but it's also very quirky and requires a lot of strange thinking to win levels.
Drone Tactics is a solid game, if very easy. The plot won't exactly wow you but it still manages to be fun. Hoshigami is great if you like a challenge, just remember that Melee is worthless and it's only worth making Mages and Archers. And I keep hearing good things about Front Mission, but I just cannot get into it.
...I think that's all of them, actually, unless you count Shiren and Izuna.
Also, the beginning scene with the two land-masses linked together reminds me of the beginning of the trailer for Tales of Innocence, which I've seen here.
the audio sounded really cheap.I beleive the direction of this monolouge is weak.I cant figure out who is he talking to.What is the situation wherein when he is having this conversation and he Sounds like he is in pain .There is no background music? You see it doesnt work when you narrate the same way as the Japanese do.They like to break the sentence and if you do it in English you sound like you are talking like William Shatner( sorry Shatner). It feels like the ADR work is rushed and cheap.

Yes, that is awful dubbing. Maybe a Japanese voice-track is the best option for this game.
