I stayed in a hotel about a month ago that actually had a GameCube controller plugged into it. You know how much games cost? $6.99. An hour.
An HOUR.
It's true -- Hotels don't want you playing video games on their TVs.

And this is why I have a laptop with 3G functionality loaded with emulators. Hotels are just rediculous with pricing of that sort of thing.
Didn't a Scottish hotel ban videogames over christmas completely?

Well written piece. Hotels in general don't care about keeping you entertained. Maybe because the less you're entertained, the more inclined you are to leave and not mess up their rooms even though you're paying for them.
More and more hotels are starting to provide internet access as a standard service... but maybe that's just in Canada. In fact at most of the local hotels there is free wifi service even if you are just sitting in the lobby with your laptop.
If you have problems with their service complain about it.
Also crazy people who bring their console to hotels are very few.

I actually stayed at a hotel where they provided me with a PS3 and a copy of Ratchet And Clank Future to boot. Pretty nice.
I spent my time watching Dexter instead. Hey, SHOtime rox.

"but the places I stay at are your 'Holiday Inn's' 'TravelLodges' and 'Premier Inns' you can expect a TV, about 8 channels and that's your lot!"
All those places have Free WiFi in the states. Just to rub it in a little.

They are finally starting to catch up. I've seen hotels with game rooms, the systems installed with multiple flat screens and couches in Washington State, but then again, it was just outside of Seattle. Many tvs in hotel rooms in the US don't have inputs, or the ones that do, you can't flip to the video channel (you can, manually enter #999 but we didn't know that then). In most cases it was intentional so you used their services, but now they are starting to upgrade. Though I imagine we will start to see more integration at the cost of renting a proprietary console at the front desk. You don't need to give $ony or M$ a reason to sell more consoles, I'm sure they are already on it.
I work nights at a hotel (which is where I cruise dtoid's cblogs and forums most of the time ...like i am now), and suggest just asking the front desk for help in that area. Sometimes they won't be able to help because they're just dumbasses, but if you get ahold of anyone decent/competent they'll be able to help you out as long as the TV has the plugs you need. I've switched over to whatever source people needed for consoles/laptops a few times in my time here and its no real big deal.
The reason the remotes don't have the source/menu type of buttons because they don't want people fucking up how they're programmed because then a desk or office worker has to go fix them when another guest finds the problem and is all pissed off (most of the housekeepers here either aren't trusted with the master remotes or speak so little english you can't teach them anyway).
To put it in perspective, when I was helping to open this hotel I literally spent an entire day just going room to room setting up the cable on each tv and checking the internet connections. That's an 8 hour day of doing nothing but that... and I'm sure they don't want to pay me to do that again and definitely don't want the next guest to be inconvenienced/mad. In short, just call or drop by the desk. If the dayshift is busy or stupid, check back later. Nights are slower and the workers have to be trained more extensively since there are fewer people working then. Good luck next time.
