OBJECTION! Phoenix Wright cosplayer + me at Video Games Live Toronto

My name is Matthew and I write a small blog called The Quixotic Engineer about nerdy things. I'm a Software Engineering student at Concordia University in Montreal. My love of video games started with my dad's ColecoVision and has no signs of stopping.

Take it away, Runaway Five!

How the Valve Stole Christmas
Gangles | 9:37 AM on 12.15.2007 14 comments

From the moment it was announced way back in November, I knew I had to get my hands on a Weighted Companion Cube Plush. Portal is one of the best games I've ever played, so I was eager to have a version of the WCC that I didn't have to euthanize.

However, it appears that Valve has decided to cancel Christmas in Canada this year. While proceeding to the checkout with my Weighted Companion Cube and Aperture Laboratories Coffee Mug in hand, I was blindsided by five cruel words: Shipment to U.S. Addresses Only. Heartbroken, I put the items back on the virtual shelf.

Valve: even though you broke my heart (and killed me), you're still one of my favorite game developers. Your support for the mod community is commendable, as is the fact that you've remained independent and keep making terrific games. That being said, not shipping outside of the U.S. is massively uncool, especially considering that your games are enjoyed worldwide.

So, fellow non-Americans, it's time to get proactive. I'm going to urge you to e-mail the Valve store (store@valvesoftware.com) and let them know that you're interested in purchasing from them but do not live in the U.S.A. If they see that there's enough international interest in their products, they may consider revising their exclusionist shipping policies.

UPDATE: After some additional investigation, it turns out that the shipment page is lying. They *do* ship internationally, but it costs a whopping $27.

Agreed. I wanted one (i.e six) of these but now no luck. At least it can't possibly threaten to stab me now.

That is quite possibly the most expensive plushie I've ever wanted o_o.

Well, the computer did warn us not to get attached to our Companion Cubes - maybe this is what she meant, and it had nothing to do with fire.

Valve is silly for not sharing with the rest of the world.

The WCC plushie sucks.

Seriously.

It's supposed to be a cube, not a goddamn rounded cube.

Errm... "Valve allows shipments to a P.O. Box via U.S. Post only."
It doesn't mean they don't send stuff out of the US.

If they didn't ship outside the US at all, this wouldn't make sense:
"FREE SHIPPING
When you purchase $50 or more

Details:
*Buy $50 or more and send the order to a single U.S. address.
*Select Standard US Post shipping method (offer only valid with US Post shipping)"

Now what's really pissing me off is that PORTUGAL IS GONE FROM THE LIST OF COUNTRIES! WHAT THE FUCK!?

@KamikazeTutor
From the shipment page:

Shipment to U.S. Addresses Only (No P.O. Box)
Valve will only ship Merchandise to addresses in the United States. Valve does not accept orders to ship to a P.O. Box.

You can always get a Companion Cube on Kingdom of Loathing.

Gah, it turns out that the shipment page is a lie. Despite its claims, international shipping IS available, it just costs $27. Seventy dollars is rather steep for a plushie and a coffee mug.

Now... is it possible to edit my post to reflect these new discoveries.

Yup, click on the 'gangles blog' link at the top of the page, then the 'all my posts' link above your banner. From there select 'edit' for this post. Its something like that anyway.

What does anyone reckon to the chances of getting this shipped to the UK before Christmas?

I got one for a friend of mine and was going to get one for myself. But uh.. $30 bucks is a bit much for a plush that's 6x6x6.
