Starcraft and Evolutionary Biology, or Something
GamingGoddess | 4:17 PM on 07.03.2009 7 comments

The highest-quality artwork ever featured on this blog...hey, I'm busy.

I don't play Starcraft; why I do not will soon become apparent. However, I have been thoroughly trained in SC terminology by my brother, for the soul purpose of being put on the receiving end of narratives like this:

"Okay, so we go random and it ends up being a ZvZ, so it's a race to see who can get mutas first. Of course you need to make some lings until you can get mutas. For some reason he didn't send an Overlord, so I was able to build two ECs and crush his nat before his mutas could pop out. It was close, and both of us were doing very economic builds, but at some point his macro started to slip so it was GG."

I have to periodically remind myself that this is actually English, and I have a degree on my wall that attests that I understand it.

I don't hate Starcraft; in fact, I find the strategic intricacies of it quite interesting-- particularly those involving the Zerg, since there are a lot of Zerg strategies that are incredibly awesome in theory and are probably ever only seen in actual play once in ever 99.99999998 matches. I can imagine being that rare Zerg player who dominated his opponent with an army consisting primarily of Queens and a few unassuming hydralisks, and that would be a good feeling I think.

Most of my interest in the game is in theory though; I lost interest in actually playing it about halfway through the Terran campaign in original SC. The obvious reason for my lack of interest is that I'm BAD at it, but that's not entirely fair; like a lot of people, I'm primarily bad at things that I don't have any interest in being good at.

Yet, I can't write off SC as simply a representative of a genre I don't like; a lot of my favorite games are strategic in nature. My pet sub-genre, dungeon-crawlers, requires a lot of the same skills as classic strategy games since so much of the gameplay revolves around resource management. So if I like strategy in general, the strategic nuances of the game itself, as well as the story, art direction, and general FEEL of the game, then what's the problem?

I realized yesterday, when listening to the chronicle of my brother's latest victory, that my problem is with the sacrificial nature of unit management within the game; if you aren't losing a lot of units in Starcraft, chances are you're doing something wrong--either the match is such a cakewalk that it's pointless, or you're letting your enemy have his way with the map without sending out any opposition. You make armies of units, and should you lose an entire army while trying to achieve a minor objective, C'est la vie; if you achieved the objective, it was probably worth it.

This is an alien concept to me; I make units in games for the sake of seeing them not only survive, but THRIVE. In SRPGs I will happily babysit a nigh-useless unit for the grand majority of the game in the hopes of MAYBE crafting them into a good high-level unit someday; the fact that it is "inefficient" is irrelevant. The thought of an SC match is exhausting to me, since I know that I would be struggling the entire time to keep all of my units alive, failing, and having to keep pumping out new units to replace their fallen brethren. It's all, literally, too mercenary.

The nagging question here is WHY SHOULD I CARE? I know that units are not people. I know that zerglings and zealots and firebats are just little clusters of pixels on the screen, so the idea of them "dying" is laughable. I just find the idea of creating units and then allowing them to die distasteful on some deeper level that I can't explain or justify.

At the very significant risk of overgeneralizing, I find myself wondering how much of this distaste for war games actually runs deeper than simple personal preference. I don't like war games, shooters, or anything else that involves killing a lot of units over a short period of time, and I don't know many female gamers who do. Athiestium is one of the only gamers of the female persuasion that I know of who plays shooters with any sort of frequency.

It may seem out of left field, but my real point here is to show just how problematic the accusation of "sexism" is. Saying that I don't enjoy war games because I'm female and they go against the principles of nurturing and preserving life buried deep in my psyche, would be seen as at the very least diminutive coming from a male, and probably insulting, and yet at least in my case, I think there's a large element of truth to it. I don't see how it could be due to so-called 'socialization'; I always did a lot of things growing up that were unpopular for a girl to do. If I had wanted to play certain kinds of games, I would have played them regardless of what people said; the simple reason is that I just didn't want to play games of that nature.

Now that I'm aware of this, it's like having opened a Pandora's box. I think my lack of interest in GTA (and most open-world games, come to think of it) is because I don't get any naughty joy out of being able to do stuff that I would be arrested for in reality. I'm not morally offended by most of the content, I'm simply bored by it. To get a feel of my emotional response to GTA, imagine everyone you know going on endlessly about how great a game was, only for you to find out that it was an accounting simulator. It really does strike me as that boring.

It would have seemed to me, not long ago, that saying that a large part of the problem with the games industry, and the relative paucity of content therein, is due to the fact that most of the designers are male, and thus are far more inclined to think of many things dying very fast as the pinnacle of design-- was a terribly, terribly sexist and overly simplistic thing to say. Is it?

Interesting Read!

I'd never really considered RTS in that way, but I love troop management in Turnbased Strategy.

Caring about my troops in X-Com and Valkyria Chronicles is one of the things that really draws me into those series. Now that I think about it, the point there is to manage your army as if you won't get another one, since a reckless death is irreversible. Sure, there are more soldiers to be drafted, but not that individual soldier, that has a name and a history with your unit.

Considering the industry playbook from a gender POV, its easy to assign a decidedly "male" leaning to most of the industry's output. Its not for lack of want from designers or the gamers even. I think games that don't revolve around making things dead end up being important parts of the landscape. Its why I'm sorry SimCity is stuck in market-focus hell, and why I'm pretty pumped about Scribblenauts.

And considering GTA: I think I've enjoyed the evasive aspect of that game more than the very straight forward putting-bullets-into-things parts. Though the violence of the themes take a front seat public, I think running away and navigating the cities has resulted in more memorable and exciting moments for me in that series.

Awesome blog... and I'll be back to comment more fully later! (my comments tend to be pretty long! LOL!)

That was great! I don't think it has anything to do with gender: I have the same problem, and I can assure you I am unquestionably a male. When I played through the campaign in Starcraft the first time I did my best never to lose a single unit... waiting for mana/energy to recharge and fighting a war of attrition for hours rather than sacrificing a single battalion. I won't say I was thinking of having to write letters to that poor marine's family... but the personality imbued into the little guys by their acknowledgements and repeated clicking made me like them. A lot. I couldn't bring myself to throw them into the maw of the Zerg or against the psionic blades of the Protoss. In this case, maybe Blizzard was a little TOO successful at making their characters likable.

I'm female and primarily play shooter games ... and I agree with you to some point. I do however think that as children most of us are more socialized for a nurturing and caring role (playing with dolls which emulate caring for a baby), though I do agree that nature also plays a role as we are the ones that biologically bear children and nature can attest to the protective role that mothers play.

I honestly don't know why more women don't play shooter games... unlike RTS games like Starcraft, the only thing you are protecting is your own butt... which is actually a good thing! You also try to protect your teammates in a team based game, but that's also all good (and if you or a teammate dies, they generally respawn anyway, unless it's a no-respawn game which isn't common).

I do think that the design of the game doesn't necessarily encourage women to try... most women I know aren't into guns and the weapon selections in some games can be dizzyingly confusing with all the various choices and the games also seem more analogous to very competitive sports which tends to be another male dominated area.

I think that the recent trend towards co-op shooter games will draw more women in... Resistance 2 co-op and Left 4 Dead are basically games where you and your buddies fight off hordes of bad guys - something that I think can appeal to any gender (and works with those protective instincts). Gaming is gradually changing and cross-genre appeal is starting to happen more often. A lot of women like RPG games and shooter games are starting to incorporate more and more RPG aspects of character development, growth, individualization - but still maintaining the team based play. Games like the upcoming Uncharted 2 will incorporate the use of female avatars for online play which also has a co-op mode and much of the game is a blend of platforming, shooting and story.

As genres become more blurred, I basically think we'll see more and more women giving the shooter genre a try... and liking it! :)

Great blog...got me really thinking! :)

@Tubatic & Qalamari-- in retrospect I made it sound too much like I thought the whole thing was about gender, and obviously it's not-- my bf for example doesn't like games that are "lossy" in that fashion either. I just think in my case it has something to do with sacrificing units going against my instincts, but there are a lot of other reasons to feel protective of your units in a game. For me I think I subconsciously think of my units as though they're my children, whereas other people can just as easily think of them as their buddies-- especially in SC, where the units have a lot of personality.

@Elsa: Interesting points, it's especially interesting to me that you mention weapon selection though-- that's pretty much the only aspect of most shooters that I like, and one of the reasons why I like Parasite Eve so much (it's an RPG with GUNS, lol.) I've actually done a fair amount of real-life shooting, and while I haven't done it in a while, I'd much rather pick up a real rifle then play a shooter.

I'm also far more accurate shooting IRL than I am in games ><. That's part of the reason why I think the "Games train kids to use guns" argument is such bull, because the mechanism for aiming within a game is usually completely alien from actual marksmanship. Rifles do not have RIGHT ANALOGUE STICKS!

My Personal Blog
Because I occasionally think about things other than games (I know-- for shame!)
Currently doing a 20-year history of Nine Inch Nails, because apparently I don't have enough projects that are HUGE TIME-SUCKING MONSTERS. Anyway, I try to keep anything that's videogames-related on Gaming Goddess, but there's a little bit of inevitable crossover.

My graphic novel, Sterling
There is some videogame-related stuff in Sterling, particularly Final Fantasy, but that's not really the focus. Meant for adults, so don't say I didn't warn you:).

My Twitter I'm very conscious of twitter-spamming, so I try to tweet only when I update one of my blogs or comics. Some people can get away with constantly tweeting charming little witticisms and it's neat, but I think if you have any interest in my twitter at all, it should be useful, never a nuisance.

About the name Gaming Goddess: No, I do not have delusions of grandeur! At least, not about games!
The origin of GG is this: My boyfriend's Mom is REALLY good at Space Invaders and games like that, leading me to dub her the "8-bit Goddess". We decided that 8-bit Goddess would be a really good name for the gaming blog that I wanted to start, except it would be false advertising since I personally suck at 8-bit games. So I changed it to the more general Gaming Goddess-- so I'm good at some type of games, I just don't have to specify which ones:).

Of course, if my boyfriend's awesome mom wants to start a blog, she can be the 8-bit Goddess, and I will bow to her in humble submission.

Currently Playing:
I have decided to change this section to only what is in my consoles AT THE MOMENT as opposed to every game I'm technically in the middle of. Accuracy FTW.

DSi: Final Fantasy IV (It's amazing! Why did I wait so long?)
DS: ARMY OF MOOGLES, I mean, Final Fantasy VI
PS2: Odin Sphere
PSOne: Azure Dreams, Parasite Eve, Tomb Raider

Latest Fan Art:

Yeah, something new! Rydia's cool, people complain about the graphics in the new DS version of FFIV but I love the way the characters look...well, except for Rosa. The girl could use pants.

About Me:
I'm a starving artist/freelance writer/comic book artist/insert other vocation that makes very little money. If you're on Destructoid, chances are I am older than you. That kind of pisses me off.

Anyway, I'm working on some projects that I think might be of interest to some Dtoid readers, but I think I'll keep most of that stuff in my profile section, so the Cblogs won't be taken up with self-promotional posts from me. I'll add the info to my profile when I start my new comic and things like that.
