With Left 4 Dead's release looming over, I figured I'd post a top ten things to have during a zombie apocalypse. Keep in mind, this is the top ten THINGS to have, not top ten weapons. Who the hell can carry ten weapons during a zombie apocalypse? That list later...? Probably not.
10. Food
Canned preferably. I know it sounds strange it being at the bottom of the list, but there are far more important things to consider having. Food should be scavenged for, not necessarily always present with you.
9. A dirt bike or motorcycle
Sounds crazy, I know. I'd probably prefer a car or truck of some kind, maybe if there were more than just me. However, the off road capability and fact you can move it while it's off make it a little more worth while having. At least as far as wheels go. It's also probably a little more easily to maneuver given the situation. The only downside: getting knocked off. If you get knocked off your bike, you are pretty much done. If you are trapped in your car with zombies all around, you are done either way. That's just a little more slower and terrifying.
8. A Riot Shotgun, with Side attachments and Ammo
If you can get your hands on one, this would be more ideal than an assault rifle. It's all about stopping power and in close quarters that helps. You could hit more than one person with it and maybe take off some limbs. If you can get a flashlight attachment for it that just boosts it's value. It can be strapped to your back or side for ease of carrying. And if it's a zombocalypse, it might just be within reason to find.
7. Nightvision Goggles
This is probably my most far fetched item on the list. I was told you could find them at hunting shops, so I figured I'd put it in the list. After you find them, it's a matter of batteries, which shouldn't be too difficult. This was originally a flashlight, but I believe if you can find these, you are set at night. They don't produce any outwardly noticeable light and you can just wear them on your head during the day.
6. Flint and Steel
It will be crucial to be able to make a fire. You won't be able to count on lighters and even less on matches. Either way, flint and steel will last you longer. If you can find those other things, that's just a bonus.
5. Backpack
Pretty self explanatory. You need to have something to carry your crap in. That's probably your best bet.
4. Bottled Water
You can survive longer on just water than food with no water. The fact it's a zombie apocalypse probably escalates that fact substantially. I wouldn't say carry so much that it weighs you down. But carry enough of it and maybe hide however much you can to come back for if you need to.
3. Glock 17 or Glock variant & Ammo
I'm not saying I'm a glock fan. More of a beretta kind of guy. Though, in a zombocalypse my gun of choice would be the glock. It's relatively easy to find, most of the police I've seen carry a variant. Though I'm sure it depends on where you are. The ammo is a common type, 9mm. It has a great clip capacity at 17-19 rounds depending on if you have the extension. You can mount a flashlight or laser sight to it. It's very durable and light to carry. It may not have the stopping power of some bigger hand guns but it's other qualities out weigh that. Besides, it's all about head shots with a hand gun and zombies. Stopping power would be your main fire arm, if you have one. Such as the afore mentioned shotgun.
2. Medical kit of some kind
Either first aid, or what have you. Patching up cuts that could be infected isa priority. Also having a head ache during a zombie apocalypse would suck ass. I wouldn't suggest hijacking an ambulance, but maybe just looting it.
aaannnnnddddd.....
1. Crowbar
If I'm going down, I'm going down dignified and swinging a crowbar! Iwould say this is probably the most ideal item you can have on you. It's a blunt and slashing weapon. You can break in to buildings with it. It won't jam on you like a gun can. You don't have to give it gas. It can be found at any hardware store or janitors closet probably. It's just an all around handy thing to have around.
That's my ten. Put up your additions/revisions to the list in the comments.

Dirt bike is too loud, needs fuel. Outside of the initial "get the fuck out of Dodge" phase, a mountain bike would be better in most cases.
You need to be careful with backpacks. Nothing reflective or bright, which is the opposite of what most manufacturers produce.
Also, FireSteel.
Also, FuBar.
(it's a flash adver-site, but it's worth it)
Food is too low. WAY TO LOW! and a Riot Shotgun is a horrible weapon to have. Ammo is scarce, and think, when running, do you think that is light enough to not effect your form? Also, Motorbike = bad, depends on gasoline, and makes too much noise
a black guy
Spam. Ode to Dawn of the Dead?
Blades don't need reloading, motherfucker.
Riot shotgun shouldnt be on the list.
Nukes should be on that list.
You can find them just about anywhere. I'm fucking serious.
Well at least no one's said a katana yet. Not only would a legitimately edged one be hard to find, but there's no guarantee that you'd even be able to swing it without chopping off one of your own limbs. Stick with something easy, like a crowbar or just a blunt object since they can serve as multi-purpose tools.
As far as guns go, the sidearm is fine, but if you need something for long range then the best option is a .22 rimfire. The ammunition is super light and is readily available. Sure, it's not the biggest, baddest gun on the block, but it sure beats trying to find .50 caliber ammunition in the middle of a farm.
Cricket Bat.
This was brought up in the forums ages ago, but it bears repeating. The best thing to have in a Zombocalypse is Batman. With Bat Anti-Zombie Spray in his utility belt.
25 inch black dildo.
@ZeroTolo
If you need a bladed weapon, may I suggest a Machete?
Machetes are great for in-door and out-door sweeps thanks to it's short blade.
Also, a Shotgun WITH silencer can work.
sounds about nice but you forgot wear light yet thick clothing
ok, ok two black guys then
Screw fighting, I'd just load up on wilderness survival equipment and head for the hills. Literally.
Monogahela National Forest is about two hours away from my house, and I (along with most of my immediate family) have quite a bit of experience outdoors backpacking and such. So with hundreds of square miles of appalachian forest and mountains between us and major centers of population, we could survive for months, possibly longer if necessary.
Not as glamorous as fighting zombies, but a lot more practical in my opinion.
eugh, I'm sorry but i hate this list, here's my revised list:
1. Supply of CLEAN water, whether rain or bottled.
2. Shelter - Think of this as a siege, not a war. Try not to move about, barricade yourself in.
3. Supply of food, grow your own if you can, otherwise tinned is the way to go.
4. Machete or some bladed weapon.
5. Medical equipment (iodine, bandages, etc)
6. Fubar / other tools (eg crowbar, hatchet, hammer)
7. Crossbow / Pistol if you can get them + ammo
8. Something to pass time eg books to prevent madness
hmm, that will do methinks
@Swe3t
That's the more logical plan, but for most people, some amount of confrontation would be necessary in order to make it out to the wilderness. Hence our discussion of weapons.
Also, if you have people that you can trust to a) believe you and b) plan ahead for a zombipocalypse, start planning out a strategy for certain scenarios such as sweeping buildings and the like. I have a friend at college who sat down with me one day and we planned out how we could clear one of our residence halls and use it as a shelter until we'd either whittled away the zombie population or help arrived.... assuming that help wasn't going to be a military death squad intent on containing the outbreak.
Stephen Hawking. With tons of brains and the inability to run, he'll occupy the zombie hordes long enough so that you can make your escape.
I would use Berretta and not a glock, I would use two Berreta´s so i can have backup if I dont have the time to reload.
Also I would use a silencer in one of those so I wouldnt draw to much attention.
A rifle, medium range but with a large mag, maybe a M16.
The crowbar is a great idea.
I would find shelter, stock food, water and ammo, and survive while I blog on dtoid.
I'd like to see somebody try to kill a walking corpse with a crowbar.
Trying to hold that long bit of narrow metal while flailing and bludgeoning another person would hurt your hands like fuck with the reverberations of cranium and metal.
A solid wooden baseball bat would be ideal, something with a thick handle and is evenly proportioned. You don't need to fuck up your hands or become off balance when surrounded by zombies.
I also don't agree much with this list. It seems rather sensationalist more than practical. Vehicles? Never put your faith in a vehicle during a zombie apocalypse; there is only so much fuel, but there are always more zombies, listening and following.
I like snakedudes idea of a machete. It is short, light, but kept sharp enough it can cut through even the fleshiest of necks with a couple of chops, and should at least sever the connection to the brain with the first if you swing it hard enough.
Also, in the event you can't obtain night vision goggles. Stocking up on batteries and a video camera with NV capabilities is not a bad idea. Although if you are walking in the open at night, you are pretty much dead anyway.
lightsaber
a tall tree fort and an unlimited supply of apples.
im set fo' life.
Awesome list
Ace of Knaves has the best answer to the zombie question that I've ever heard.
