My bank account got a lovely surprise last Friday, in the form of an ill-conceived economic stimulus deposit (I'll save the rant on why it won't work and just smile for the "government error in my favor... sort of"). I've been wanting to get a PS3 for a while now, mostly because my lovely 60" Sony XBR doesn't have the Blu Rays yet, and also because I have a gigantic hard on for MGS.
I've been following Sony's ups and downs with the system, but really don't know which model is going to fit me best. I know that I can upgrade the hard drive to any size I want, and that certain models (the newer ones, right?) don't have PS2 backwards compatibility. I would prefer to get a bundle with the new dual shock included, and getting a free game with my purchase would also make me happy.
I would like to have PS2 backwards compatibility, but it isn't a deal breaker, as I'm moreso going for the best value. Please, my PS3-minded dtoiders, let me know what's important about the different offerings, and also, if anyone knows of a site where I can order the system without having to pay tax (eg. online only store), that would be helpful too. Please also chime in with game recommendations, as all I'm eyeing so far is Warhawk and Uncharted.
On the random update front, my work has been busy as hell (I'm a banker) and gaming time has been cut significantly. I'm middling through Condemned 2 (loving it more and more as I get further into the game... I'm in the Black Lake Lodge currently) and GTA IV (concurrent opinion with everyone else and their stepmoms: I love it). I miss all of your witty quips and NSFW links, too.
80GB, 20GB - Somewhere around 80% BC
40GB - Somewhere around 30% BC
I find myself using three when playing Rock Band.
And I always have my external drive connected to it to see videos on the television.
So I'm glad I got the 80gig for that reason. 2 usb slots is just too restricting.
comes with the game and a dualshock 3
More USB slots are always going to be preferable to less, so the 80gb is looking better and better.
@Kryptinite
That looks pretty damn good to me. I wasn't able to find any places to pre-order the bastard though. Or is that just the latest "japan-only-cocktease" from Sony?
No it'll be out in the states when MGS4 comes out for $499. I looked for a place to pre-order it as well but found nothing. I think you'll be okay though if you went to pick it up at store day 1.
there's also a limited edition version of the PS3 that is for MGS4 which is "gun metal" in color. That's probably "japan-only-cocktease" business
Damn. Looks like I won't be able to avoid paying tax on this purchase. Oh well, it looks sweet enough to warrant the cash, and it's free money anyway! (not really...)
And MGS4 has to be GOTY! UK OPM Gave it a ten, and they're really really really really objective. Right?
When will normal systems be bundled with dual shocks? Any word yet?
BlindsideDork is correct about the 40 ^
Does anyone know if the bundled sku is going to be pre-orderable online? (I work a lot, and I'm lazy when it comes to in-store shopping)
Also @mix: Your avatar makes me giggle with delight.
Frankly, I think it's worth it to search for a used 60 gig version (and if you buy used, no tax), but backward compatibility is more important to me.
As far as games, I can't honestly recommend Uncharted until it drops in price. It's a beautiful game, and it's got a nice story and some likable characters, and the platforming parts were fun, but they were too few and far between. The meat of the game is Gears of War-esque combat, and it's fun for a bit, but by the second half of the game I found myself just wishing I could skip the combat sections and get to the platforming. It's the same thing over and over, for eight hours.
Thanks, yours make me all warm and....fuzzy.
I was thinking (Epic) and when you people have NARPS you should totally put your Avatar on a shirt!!
I will be doing this for my BC NARP as it just makes it sweet and easy!
I have a 20GB and the missing Wifi isn't a huge issue, but I have a particular setup that doesn't require Wifi or huge cables across my floor.
Then again, if you get a used system, you'll have to go and buy a DS3 on top of any games you might want. Depends if you like the smell of new plastic or not...
can you put any hard drive in the ps3 or do you have to buy certain drives? (limiting you to 80gb) i was just wondering because its either that or an external, and i think it would be easier to just use a larger internal
You can put in any 2.5" Sata HDD that is 5400rpms, higher RMPS create more heat apparently. I'm going to be tossing a 200gig Seagate in mine shortly
@brainderailment
Okeeday. I'm now happy and pacified from my worries. T-Minus a month until I get to ride the Blu Rays!
Thanks a lot for all of the info guys. Dtoid is like syphilis, but the gift that it keeps giving is love (and rashes).
@Dexter, I wouldn't say that it's the best game ever, but it certainly is a quality title. I respect your opinions though cause we usually agree on games, particularly for DS, but I just wanted to say that I liked it and I think it's worth playing.
brainderailment already made me feel better about it, so I'm just going to continue under the assumption that [insert store name here] will have a copy on opening day when I walk in after work. If they don't, then they will have quite the hissy fit on their hands.
Did I mentioned MGS is the sw33test deal in the planet?
That's the spirit! I wasn't even close to thinking about taking a day off like that (blame my myopic vision on an annual regulatory examination). You, my friend, are a gentleman and a scholar. I can ace the college kids, and embarrass myself on the links, all before dinner. Good call.
@Mxyzptlk
I hope you enjoy your 360. Don't forget to spend the remainder on some unnecessary luxury item. I'm thinking I'll use my excess to buy milk (that shit is $5 a gallon now... outrageous)
