Note: The stance in this article is that opinion of the author alone.

With the recent outburst that happened on Cross Assault between Super_Yan and Aris, it has come to a forefront that women who are into video games, I believe, are treated unfairly. Now, the conversation between both Yan and Aris came to light because of the Livestreaming of the event, and inside of the stream chats, a mostly male community backed the male causing the offense. You can also find many other rude or offensive chats between 'boys' and women in gaming on YouTube easily enough, and quite a few times it led to the 'boys' complaining or cussing or offending the woman in general, especially if the woman player was significantly better than they were. This makes the game less fun

Now, it isn't a surprise to know that 'boys' don't like getting out done by women, it's a ego thing. This is considered a greater hit to the ego if the woman is a professional in that particular format. This is even more of a problem in niche communities, gaming for example, that has a male dominated community. Yes, there are plenty of women who play games, but they are far and few in between who play games professionally. Now, one would hope, most professional players will do what they are called.. be a professional, play nice, don't offend your opponent, and enjoy what you are doing. You do this because YOU'RE THE FOREFRONT OF THE COMMUNITY, people look at you to be the poster child, what you do is what is reflected on the genre. Aris didn't do this, and neither did the community watching on the Livestream. Now, the Livestream I can understand, but I will get to that later in the article, Aris, however; should of known better. He is one of the more well-known in the professional fighting game genre, and this is what makes this a problem. When you have a community of folks, good things and bad things happen... though it is the bad things that comes forward and rarely the good things get covered and looked at.

And this is just the start of the problem.

Online gaming is a issue, anonymity plays a huge factor in this, as people who game and watch games online use this anonymity to protect them from 'harm', bring great amounts of trash talking. This anonymity also leads to significant amounts of trolling and worshiping. When Aris started smarting off to Yan, a majority of the online community moved to back Aris. Now, ignoring the whole such thing that there is 'no women on the internet', most of these people are probably in their mid-teens to late 20s with a majority of those backing Aris PROBABLY(my own opinion) in the teenage crowd. This makes the online community easily influenced, and when they watch a 'professional' like Aris talk down to women, they thing it's perfectly fine that a woman shouldn't be gaming, that if a woman does game that they can talk shit to them and they'll be fine because they have the internet they could easily hide behind when confronted. You also have to deal with the idiots in games themselves, if a 'boy' player ends up learning that one of the players in the room is female, the trash talk turns more offensive in a heartbeat.

THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Women are people too. There are reasons why workplace sexual harassment laws are in effect, they are to be treated fairly just like any other person. This goes for gaming as well. You can look at the professional community and find many people who are great competitors and keep up the spirit of how a gamer should be: Mike Ross, ComboFiend, Daigo, Justin Wong, and one who should be credited for being a gentleman in all of this, Mr. Sub-Zero. These are all male professional gamers who act like professionals, and they treat ALL their opposition with respect. All Aris did was stick out like a sore thumb and make those who actually do good in the professional gaming community look like idiot 'boys' who don't respect women, and the professional community doesn't need that. All gamers themselves will also be effected by this, as stated before, the professionals in the community are looked at the most. So if a professional does something like sexually harass a female player ALL gamers MUST sexually harass female players, and with the way things are turning out online here, its looking more and more that it's the case with so many people defending Aris's actions.

I give my gratitude to Mr. Sub-Zero for what he did, and to Super_Yan for sticking up for herself.

People who play professionally or casually, you're still gamers and respect those, Men or Women, as people and fellow gamers. The eyes of people are all on you, and what you do effects the community as a whole. Don't do what Aris did and tarnish that reputation.

I agree totally women should be treated just as fellow gamers and Mr Sub Zero should be applauded for his behaviour.

One thing though I don't think the issue was sparked by being outplayed from what I heard, Super Yan herself posted on her twitter about her doubts in the tournament and whether she deserved to be in the final.
I see women as equal. It is this sole reason why I will talk as much shit to and about a woman as much as I would a man. Plain and simple. If you want to be a part of the community, then don't take the ball and go home crying, take it and give it right back to the ones dishing it out. The pussification of america continues.
I think this brings up the bigger point than are women being treated unfairly in the video game industry(which I believe they are)to the real problem of sexism, racism, and homophobia being an accepted institution in video games. You play a non rpg game nine times out of ten your playing a straight white male or the few times you do play as a woman or ethnicity they have to be sexualized or stereotyped.

@Rammstein I think your right people should be more vocal when they have a problem but it's pretty hard to stand up for yourself when your being outnumbered 100 to 1.
As Rammstein said, I think women should be treated as equals.

I'm not familiar with the situation and would wonder if the man in question also harassed other men in the same way that he did the female. If so, then he's just an asshat... if he treated the female differently, then he's a sexist asshat and deserves to be dumped as a "professional" gamer. As noted in this blog, there is no room for that kind of representation of gamers and any sponsor should quickly distance themselves from this gamer as an example to others that sponsorship comes with a price.

In terms of gaming in general, I do think that some women whine a bit too much about how badly they are treated in online play. There is a small minority of gamers who are racist, sexist, homophobic idiots who will harass anyone - male or female. I also think that gamers need to speak up more often. I have no issue with people swearing during online play... it's often a natural reaction to a cheap kill, but I detest racist, sexist and bullying comments. Any time I hear the N word, I have no issue speaking up and asking the person to not use the word because I find it offensive - and it often results in some very interesting conversations. Many actually apologise.

Gamers are people. We're no better or worst than other people. There IS sexism, racism, homobphobia and bullying... but maybe more people need to step in. I've had people do that for me, and it's a nice feeling that reaffirms my belief that it's still a minority of the gaming populace that are asshats.
It's one thing if Aris targetted Yan as an equal competitor. He's trying to defend a community he believes should speak however they want in competition.

It's another thing when Aris specifically targets a demographic or an identity. He can shit talk Yan for being bad because it's a very survival of the fittest mentality. But it's another thing to take it too far in such a way that it specifically targets people.

Mr. Sub-Zero, stay classy my man.

It's baffling to me that anyone can defend this kind of behavior and yet there it is. It's really weird to be able to peer into the FGC and be familiar with it and yet agree on the side of the mainstream gaming community and press because, "Seriously, you're going to defend this man's comments and mentality?"

So yeah, you're right. There's a reason society respects other forms of competition like football and even the surge of Starcraft, having it's own TV network and stuff. People have pride and respect in one another and are not total dickbags.

It just makes me feel Aris has no problem letting the community stay how it is, in other words, not grow. You expect people to get interested in [i]this[i]? Stay in your small little world then for all I care.
Did you mean "anonymity?" Using an "anomoly" protection oneself sounds like an idea that Wesley Crusher would have come up.with after Riker's "increase shields" suggestion backfired.
The main defense of this kind of behavior that I see seems to be:

"Well I would treat a man that way, wouldn't it be even more unfair to treat a woman differently?"

This is true, we should treat all people as equals. That said, we should also treat each other well. Yelling things like 'rape', 'bitch', and 'fag' are terrible no matter who they are aimed at. Unfortunately, women are usually associated with the first two words, so I personally believe some caution should be used when saying them around women.

But then, isn't the problem that we want to belittle one another and use horrific words associated with these kinds of grotesque imagery?

The other idea that seems prevalent is one of elitism.

"Fighting game communities are hardcore, don't expect to be treated like a child, noob."

That's fine, have fun watching your communities dying off in the years to come. Fighting games have made a small comeback in recent years and this kind of stupid elitism will just destroy everything that has been built back up.
Socal is a fucking shithole and the FG community is going nowhere because of them, they are to closed off and full of assholes, the best example of this is Street Fighter 3rd Strike OE, barely anyone new got into it thanks to Socal telling everyone to fuck off.

Fighting games will probably crash again because of those clowns.
