SC4 - Kilik, or how to win at button mashing.
Furyfire | 10:40 PM on 07.31.2008 22 comments

LEARN 2 PLAY.

It seems all I run into on XBOX Live past level 5 in the ranked matches is Kilik or Maxi. Now Maxi I can deal with as Cervantes. But Mr. Kilik... or hell, even Seung Mina, unless you know how to play him.. every person I've matched up against does the exact same two moves over and over again... maybe toss in that 5 hit poke of his every now and then. If someone doesn't know how to play him correctly.. doesn't need to be playing this game. I HATE giving negative rep to people, but I vow that every person that plays those characters and does the same two moves. They're getting hit with a Lacking Skill rep. I mean hell, with Yun-Seung at least I try to alternate my attacks... even learned some new ones to beat the button mashers, but it always ends up with me having to hit my two hit vertical or horizontal to STOP THEM.

Has anyone else had issues with Kilik, Seung Mina, or Maxi... fuck Yoda or the Apprentice.. they are not as annoying as them three.

I play as Kilik. If you know more than one move, he's actually quite cool. He has an opening move with ->+K that's pretty nice for people who aren't looking for it coming.

Then again, I'm not afraid to play as more than one character like some people are.

I love Kilik, but I hate people who do what you describe. I have a friend who'll just stand back and poke me to death. D:

I broke a Gamecube controller when someone poked the hell out of me with Kilik in SCII. Not one of my prouder moments.

I'm already about to put away SC IV and never touch it again. In the rare occasion I actually get into an online game, it's usually just an exercise in frustration as everyone plays Kilik or the Apprentice. There's no point in even trying to learn moves since button mashing is clearly the way to win. Maybe if the game was designed so that you didn't have to push every button for a combo before the first hit even lands there would be some sort of skill or timing involved. As it stands, there's no reason to do anything besides button mash.

are you kidding? the apprentice is by far the most unbalanced character in the game. if it pisses you off so much learn how to block

I have been doing pretty well online with Kilik. Here is what I find interesting.

I guess I play "cheap" occasionally but usually only after the other player is doing it to me. (or if Im losing, hehe)

but, even when playing cheap there are people who kick my ass. buy either a) being cheaper, or b) having lots of skill.

I guess if you are a really skilled player you should still have the advantage on a button smasher, and when I match up against people playing as Kilik I usually do ok.

Just figure out a new strategy and maybe one day you too will be able to defeat someone playing as Kilik.

(that apprentice lightning shit he shoots across the screen is ridiculous though)

I destroyed Snaileb today as Kilik, but he'll attest, I can pull off some amazing combos with that bitch. And fuck those pokes. they are no good. Speaking of which, who wants to play tonight?

Welcome to Xbox Live, lol. I'll also add Siegfried to that list. I must have fought against him like 40 times. They just use his forward poke and overhand slash combo over and over.

I have always hated Kilik. He has always been a thorn in my side when I play as Voldo. Fucking Kilik...

So they lack skill, but you can't beat them? Sounds like you are the one that deserves negative rep. L2P, nub.

Kilik has always been my favorite character in the series, simply because he goes in with a long piece of wood and whoops the shit out of people with swords. And the acrobatics, man I love his acrobatics, but I'll admit he's a bit of a newbie character; with a long range attack and fairly fast strikes he's pretty challenging to fight. I play with him right, though; not the same stupid move over and over again. Unless I'm going for a real high combo, lolololololol cocks.

Use Vader! His force slams are....oh...wait...

Well, if your using Cervantes then you should be able to win fairly easy against Kilik. If those darned button smashers are getting on your nerves then just spam Cervantes' "OMG FLY AT YOU ON FIRE AND PWN YOUR FACE" move by pushing:

<- + X + Y (I think it's X and Y on the 360 controller. On the PS3 it's Square and Triangle. Which is the top and left buttons.)

Cervantes pretty much smashes through anyone with that not to mention he teleports backwards before he does it so you can avoid lots of hits with that.

That's what I do anyways. Either that of I use Vader to knock people down and keep using the force slam move to keep them down if they've done nothing but spam me with the same attack over and over. Oh, and turtles.....hate em.

I hate Kilik players, HATE em! They're so friggin cheap and when you do beat them, they whine like little bitches. There's like limitless possibilities of players, why only Kilik? Whyyyy?

Just use well-timed guard impacts and you can turn the tables on button mashers and get in a few quick hits. It's especially easy if you know the same move is coming over and over.

What Char said.

If they're just using the same two moves over and over, learn to counter those two moves and you will always win because they're not going to do anything else.

This is one of the reasons preventing me from immediately getting this game. I feared this game could easily devolve into a button masher. Hopefully, those guys will eventually get tired of playing.

And like some here have said, if you know what move they going to spam, find a way around it. Part of the game is learning your opponent's attack patterns and exploiting their weaknesses. I think using the same move over and over is a pretty big weakness.

Why has no one said Taki? she takes the cake for cheese city and button mashing. She can keep you in the air with her <+x+y and then just >+x+y to just keep then bouncing over and over again. Then if you want to piss them off just roll into them and hit y befor the animation sets in for the stand up......NOW THAT IS SOME CHEESE.

Oh and marking players "lacking Skill" because you lost, button mashing or not, isn't a cool thing to do...

I just thought you might like to know that you are a scrub and you suck at fighting games. Don't worry though, you just need to read this and educate yourself and you'll be on the road to not sucking in no time.

http://www.sirlin.net/archive/playing-to-win-part-1/

A choice quotation:

"...why can the scrub not defeat something so obvious and telegraphed as a single move done over and over? Is he such a poor player that he can't counter that move?"
