About Me
I'm FUNKTASTIC yo! ^_^

Now that that's out of the way, my name is Jon and I'm from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I'm currently going to University studying Business. I have probably one of the BIGGEST collections of video games that most people will ever see, and my collection of "swag/promos/standees/collectables/soundtracks" is MASSIVE. I'm currently at around 1,500 games, of which I truly enjoy or have bought for collector's value. I also own some of the rarest collectables around.

Some of my favorite games are: Final Fantasy X, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Jet Grind Radio, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Goldeneye, Okami, Shenmue II, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Kingdom Hearts II, The World Ends With You, Breath of Fire III, Final Fantasy VI, Perfect Dark, Bubble Bobble, Chrono Trigger, and Beyond Good & Evil.

Question about Japan made vs. Mexico made SNES Cartridges!
Funktastic | 5:55 PM on 07.10.2008 8 comments

Okay, so I recently added a Contra III: The Alien Wars to my collection, but when I received it, I realized it looked different than the copy my friend has. I immediately noticed that the copy I got was "Made in Mexico" while my friend's was "Made in Japan." We've tested both games and they both work fine, but I was wondering . . . is my Mexico one a reprint or a pirated copy? If anyone knows the answer to this, please comment, as it would be greatly appreciated. The following are pictures of the 2 cartridges with commentary about their differences.

JAPAN

MEXICO

As you can see, the Japan made one has the "typical" safety warnings and such on a sticker, while the Mexico made one has it like imprinted on to the cartridge itself.

JAPAN

MEXICO

The biggest difference here is that one says "Made in Japan" and the other says "Made in Mexico." The bottom half of the front of the cartridges are also different, but I realize that may be due to when they were produced.

JAPAN

MEXICO

Here are close-ups of the labels. I apologize for the quality, but if you look REALLY close, the "Made in Mexico" label is of lower quality and seems faded, not to mention, it doesn't have that "glossy" layer on top of it, that makes the label shine naturally in light and such.

Also, for those of you who missed it on the weekend. I updated my Gaming Setup blog with a zoomed out view and my 600TH GAME! Yes . . . I finally hit the big 6-0-0! ^_^ It was a sweet game I hit it with too! Check it out here!

I think its a reprint. If it was a pirated one, there'd be some sort of dead giveaway.

congrads on the contra though.

I never thought to look at that before you made this post. It sounds to me like there was a factory in Mexico. Maybe someone with more knowledge on super nintendo can figure this one out.

By the way, Contra 3 is awesome. Good luck against that ant lion boss. He's a mean boss.

this has something to do with stolen iPods, right?

It says "assembled in Mexico" so there you have it. The game is assembled in Mexico but originally made elsewhere.
lacysquid is right. That is a reprint.

If my memory serves me right, the cart shape of the japanese one appeared later, maybe when the mini snes were released. I don't have Contra 3 but when I used to rent it back in the days it was shaped like the mexico one.
