About Me
I'm FUNKTASTIC yo! ^_^

Now that that's out of the way, my name is Jon and I'm from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I'm currently going to University studying Business. I have probably one of the BIGGEST collections of video games that most people will ever see, and my collection of "swag/promos/standees/collectables/soundtracks" is MASSIVE. I'm currently at around 1,500 games, of which I truly enjoy or have bought for collector's value. I also own some of the rarest collectables around.

Some of my favorite games are: Final Fantasy X, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Jet Grind Radio, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Goldeneye, Okami, Shenmue II, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Kingdom Hearts II, The World Ends With You, Breath of Fire III, Final Fantasy VI, Perfect Dark, Bubble Bobble, Chrono Trigger, and Beyond Good & Evil.

10 Things You Don't Know About Funktastic!
Funktastic | 1:20 PM on 02.01.2009 20 comments

There are a lot of people on Destructoid, and some who frequent/comment more often than most. Therefore, I too am following the great suggestion of listing 10 things the community doesn’t know about me, in order to hopefully create a much tighter knit and more interesting group of people to talk to over the internet! So, read on, if you wish to know 10 things about a Domo-Kun and The World Ends With You loving member of the community!

10. I only really started “collecting” about 4 years ago.

If any of you have seen the majority of my previous blog entries, you’ll know that I’m a pretty hardcore collector. I’m currently at around 750 games, yet I really only started collecting about 4 years ago. Back then, when I graduated high school, I maybe had between 150 and 200 games. I’m leaning more towards 150 since I didn’t start collecting until towards the end of 2005. As I write this, I just realized how obscene it is, in regards to just how many freaking games I’ve accumulated in that period of time, and the amount of other things like soundtracks and promo swag I’ve gotten. I don’t even want to think about how much money I’ve spent, and just realized that I didn’t get a single DS game until the DS Lite came out, and I currently own 118 games for that handheld.

9. I think World of Warcraft is an amazing game, but refuse to play it.

First things first. World of Warcraft is a freaking awesome game! It’s an incredible RPG and has so many great things going for it. That being said, I refuse to play it. Tons of people, and a lot of my friends were so psyched for it, and I was too, until I heard about pay to play. My theory is (going by launch prices), I pay $60 to buy a game and then I have to pay to play it, so the cheapest option of $15 a month for 6 months means another $90. So, I just paid $150, which is 2.5 times the cost to just buy the game, to play a game I had to pay for in the first place? Thanks but no thanks.

8. I love REAL football and hockey.

It’s going to be a controversial statement, especially on Super Bowl Sunday, but I am a huge “soccer” fanatic. The greatest sports team in the world is Manchester United! I’m a fan of all football leagues and love talking about football in general. The best players I’ve seen (I’ve played since I was 3) are the REAL Ronaldo and Francesco Totti, although my favorite player is Ruud van Nistelrooy. Also, I love hockey and am proud it’s so awesome and popular in Canada. My favorite team is the Colorado Avalanche, and Joe Sakic is one of the greatest athletes and human beings to grace our planet.

7. If a game tickles my fancy, I MUST 100% it.

I spent 120 hours on Final Fantasy X getting EVERYTHING in that game! I finished the Sphere Grid with all characters and even started deleting old +1 stat boosters and replacing them with +4 ones. I’m at 98 hours on The World Ends With You and have one pin to master and one item left to get. I’ve played on and off on Chrono Trigger (DS version) for about 1.5 months now, trying to get all the goddamn mirrors from The Arena of Ages. The hours I’ve put into Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy III (SNES), Breath of Fire III, both Kingdom Hearts, etc. are obscene. I’ve yet to beat The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Okami, because I haven’t had the time to do the 100 level dungeons. It’s a disease I tell you.

6. I have an undying love of anything Domo-kun related.

I don’t remember when it started, or why, or anything in specific about it, but the first time I saw Domo-kun, I just loved him! I still don’t know what he is, but as my one lady friend described him as “a brown fudgey thing,” he just hit a nerve that will probably stick with me the rest of my life. I just find him to be the coolest, most adorable, awesome, and badass character out there.

5. I love Italian food and culture.

I absolutely LOVE Italian food! Pasta, antipasto, sauce, veal, cheese, pizza, meatballs, sausage, etc. I find this to be the most delicious food in the world, mainly because it’s so homey. I even used to work in an Italian deli and market! I also love their culture and their lifestyle. I suggest that everyone visit Italy sometime in their life, and can safely say that Venice will be one of the most gorgeous places I’ll ever see. My Italian friends have even dubbed me “Chitalian.” I’m Chinese by the way.

4. My gaming guilty pleasure is Defense of the Ancients (DotA)

Being stereotypical, I’m Asian, and therefore I love RTS. The Warcraft III mod of DotA is the most addictive thing in the world, even though it is actually one of the most imbalanced and broken games/mods ever created. It’s the fact that it provides instant gratification in terms of playing online with others and owning them, and is so readily available at all times, that I keep going back to it.

3. My favorite game of all time is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

I find this game to be the definition of what a game should be! Incredible gameplay, awesome controls, kickass story, can be short or long, great graphics, the right amount of sidequests and things to collect, etc. I could go on for ages about how awesome this game is, but having original characters like Geno and Mallow, and actually being able to play as Bowser are some of the highlights of how this is hands down the game closest to my heart.

2. I am an enormous fan of video game music.

I find music in video games is very underappreciated. The time and effort composers such as: Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, Koichi Sugiyama, Harry Gregson-Williams, etc. put into creating original music in games, that provides such a strong atmosphere while you’re playing, is criminally overlooked. I am nearing 100 video game soundtracks, and if anyone knows of some games with awesome soundtracks I should listen to, please do tell! Besides soundtracks by the listed composers, a few of my favorites would be Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, and Katamari Damacy.

1. I look forward to PAX 2009.

I missed PAX 2008, and looking at all the pictures and reading all the stories, I’m making sure I don’t miss it this year! I look forward to seeing a bunch of you there! Also, this is cheating, but I STILL don’t know what the name of the “Destructoid” font is . . . -_-‘

The jet Grind Radio sound track was like a freaking landmark game for me in terms of licensed tracks AND original compositions. Freaking love that game.

As a long time WoW player, I kind of feel you on pay to play feeling like a rip. I've talked myself into accepting it, with some pretty good reasons in my opinion . . . but I would much rather not have to renew my privilege to play.

Also yes to italian food! Pesto and Alfredo makes everything amazing!

BOF 3 and 4 is where it's at! 5 was fun, but it didn't really tickle me enough to where I HAD to finish it.

And for our common thing for BOF and Video game music.....

100 Soundtracks! Holy beeferoid Tastic! I love you this"......................" much! ...trust me, it's a lot. That’s a blog post right there you know; You & Game music.

Hey, I bought the Japanese Limited Edition FF XII Soundtrack off eBay about three weeks ago. - While background music is background music, I love it nonetheless. So do you have the ECHOES Of War CDs? The DVD with the limited edition is absolutely amazing man! –Get it if you haven’t!

I don’t think I’ll ever get around to playing the Legend of the seven stars. I’m sure my mate next door had played it, but I fell bad now because I know I will still never play it, for no reason other then, laziness.

Good work on the ten things list. This whole community list thing is crazy!!!!!

Super Mario RPG was fantastic. I've never been to PAX, I'd love to go but I am horrified of flying! I'm not big into game collecting. I'm a renter. I beat the game, then the chances of me playing it again are slim unless it's a game with heavy focus on multiplayer that I enjoy. So that's $60 for a weekish worth of gaming. I just can't afford that.

I'm sure you probably have or maybe I missed it as I was reading, but have you checked out the music from The Minibosses? I've loved the vast majority of their renditions of videogame music. Especially Mega Man 2. :)

Omg - I just found this.

I too collected every monster, and completed the sphere grid with everyone in FFX. Cheers!

Another 100 level dungeon I had to do in addition to Twilight Princess: Dark Cloud.

Haven't gotten around to Okami though.....Nice write up!

I agree with the WOW thing completely. No way I'm paying $15 a month to basically play an online version of Warcraft3 which I got for $30 and don't have to keep paying for.
