Bail set for video game controller, implicated in murder of child.
FrogMan | 9:19 AM on 04.09.2008 7 comments

I hadn't seen this posted here yet so I thought I'd share. The story really has nothing to do with video games other than the fact that the psychotic boyfriend thought a video game controller would make a good child quieting bludgeoning tool. Somehow, the controller makes the headline though...

Its been posted here a couple of times, but all the blogs seemed to have cited from dfferent sources.

All these sources have one thing in common - they all draw attention to the controller.

I find this incredibly annoying, as a controller is likely to do the same amount of damage as hitting her with a TV Remote...or even a large book.

If this had been the case however, there wouldn't be anywhere near as much focus on the "murder weapon" or an outcry to ban TV, or to outlaw reading large and heavy books like encyclopaedias, dictionaries and...bibles.

The whole anti-videogame movement in the media is starting to get way out of hand.

I think the video game industry should start suing.

I think you're on to something here, Kepler. Good point. I hadn't really thought about it, but the story would probably have just been "Baby beaten to death" if another object was used as a weapon.

Video games are still on the fringe of society for most people, so they're bound to be demonized. Just look to the past when the same thing happened to rock music, comic books, TV, movies, the list goes on...

Also: "Johnson, 26, acknowledged beating the girl with a video game controller but did not say why, police said."

You just KNOW that the media would blow its collective wad if the police report said the guy played Grand Theft Auto in his spare time.

Hey, just in time for GTAIV's release, too.

I'm sure there was more weapons involved here than JUST the controller.

I mean seriously who throws a controller, c'mon...

That controller was expensive, what was that guy thinking?

Oh and hitting a kid is bad too
