About Me
I'm Mike, I'm from San Diego. I'm in no way new to Destructoid, I'm a just a long time lurker, first time poster. So on the topic it hand; I've been gaming for 17 years and this is the first time I've been to a site where everyone doesn't seem to be full of shit. That's pretty neat. I'm into most genres, though I'm a big fan of Fighting, Racing, and Action/Adventure. That's pretty vague, so here's a small list of my favorite games to give you a better idea:

Earthbound
Phantom Dust
Morrowind
Kotor 2
DMC3
F-Zero GX
Street Fighter IV
Killer7
Fallout 2
As well as the givens like RE4, Ocarina of Time, Bioshock, blah blah blah

Anyways, I'm starting to ramble, so in summation: What's up? Nice to meet you all, and hope to see you on XBL. If anything, here's my contribution to Dtoid:

*Disclaimer* Yeah, yeah; this game is anything but new. However, it seems like no one has talked out it; it's really in the shadow of Super Mario Galaxy and more recently SSBB. So I bought a Wii recently as decided to pick it up over Mario Galaxy (for the the time being, of course I'll buy it eventually) and just finished it. The following are my thoughts:

I'm not sure if a any games has left a more conflicting impression in my mind than Metroid Prime 3. I started out loving the game, and as it progressed I liked it less and less. By the end of it, I could seriously care less. Yet when all was said and done, I thoughly enjoyed it. Maybe even loved it. My mind is aflame.

Gameplay
From a gameplay standpoint, I think it was absolutely fantastic. I had heard that it could be unresponsive and troublesome, but with the exception of pulling energy cells out of walls (seriously, the Wii has some grave trouble with depth detection) I think it worked without a hitch. Enemies fell left and right to what is fundamentally a mouse and analog stick combo, which is indeed an ideal way to play a FPS. It just feels right, and I'm glad to see that the guys at Retro Studios knew what they were doing. However, it struck me as odd that A is the default shoot button despite the fact that B is a trigger. I mean it is easier to shoot with your thumb, but I'm playing a Wii, damn it; immersion is key. Regardless, the button configuration can be changed at any time, so I have real no problems there.

Presentation and Design
Cool menus have to get you somewhere, right? I kid, the polish on this game is astounding. Everything is cohesive, yet the environments and characters are all quite varied. The bounty hunters and bosses are particularly nice and unique. Especially Hunter Ghor; what a bad-ass. Make no mistakes, this is a beautiful game. It's not going to make you poo your pants with glee if you're in to photorealism, but the art style respectable and works well with the somber tone. And do I ever mean somber, this game still makes you feel isolated (despite having the most dialog I can ever recall seeing in a metroid game) even though you're in constant contact with other friendly NPC's. Everything just seems so bleak. For good reason mind you, but still; death and depression are abundant in this story.

Sound
The sound is fantastic, the sound effects are as good as ever, but the music has definitely taken a hit. That's not to say it's bad, there are still some good pieces, yet I just don't feel it's up to par. In fact, it might be the weak point of the game, which is saying a lot considering it still isn't bad by any means.

The Bad
So I've said pretty much nothing but praise in regards to the game, so what's the problem? It's hard to explain, really. I've just never felt so indifferent towards a game after finishing it, period. Perhaps it was the inclusion of a very weak plot line that left me wanting more. I kept waiting for it to deliver, yet it never did. Perhaps it was the ending. I won't spoil anything, but the ending is pretty "meh". It's the ending of a trilogy? You wouldn't know, honestly. This thing goes out with a whimper. Speaking a whimpering, this game is easy as hell. Any difficulty the combat would provide is completely negated by the "I win" button, or as it is referred to in the game, Hyper mode. Getting lost presents more challenge than any boss in the entire game, and it's almost impossible to even do that. The franchise has been sufficiently dumbed down for the target Wii audience (read: seven year-olds), and your hand is literally being held the entire time. It's a far cry from the first Prime, where I was literally baffled to tears by the enormous map and complete lack of direction. But that was a good thing, it was Metroid.

That is my main problem with this game: it does not feel like a Metroid game. That's a pretty big problem considering it's supposed to be one of the most atmospheric and immersive game series ever. It has way more action, way less exploration, and none of the challenge of any of the titles before it. Even the world map is broken up to an insane degree. No retarded amount of backtracking? Blasphemy! (Alright, that one isn't so bad)

The Verdict
In the end, I would recommend this game to any and every Wii owner. Despite all the negative points I have brought up, it's till easily one of the best games on Wii, and definitely the best action/fps title. The funny part is, someone would probably like it more if they weren't a fan of Metroid Prime, or even the series as a whole. Which is shouldn't happen to a beloved franchise, or at least that's my take on it. So you've heard me ramble, what are your opinions on it?

Oh, and I'm FlatTopJesus. Hey. Some of you may know me, if not; I have an intro in my side bar or on the forums.

Good writeup. I had very little interest in the story throughout the game, as the "corrupting weapon" cliche was stretched pretty thin.

I didn't finish it because I got to the point where you have to collect a ton of batteries in the game. Tasked with either searching for these or moving on to a different game, I chose the latter.

The repetitive boss battles were a pain in the ass. They weren't difficult, it was just boring to repeat the same movements over, and over while walking around to pick up more of the practically unlimited ammo and health items.

I thought the game was pretty damn good. The story and game play compelled me, but the bad part is that this is truly the first game that I felt no need to play after I've beaten it.

Man, this sums up how I feel about Prime 3 pretty well. I played it a couple weeks ago (and still haven't finished it, as the last boss killed me twice before I had to shut off the system due to hand cramps and now I have to go through that last area again and stuff like that can seriously turn me off of finishing a game (Paper Mario TTYD)) and while I recalled having fun something seemed off the farther I got into the game. Having the whole game broken up into separate planets is certainly part of it, no multiple connections between the various areas. And even with the hint system turned off the game really does lead you around quite a bit. Hyper Mode really does let you obliterate practically anything except bosses where you want to use it somewhat sparingly. The general lack of enemies in the Sky Town was something else that rubbed me wrong... it made sense in the story, but it wasn't fun to have almost nothing to shoot at 75% of the time.

The power-ups seemed kind of lame this time as well.

Hey MOO. I got to a point where I thought I had to do that, and it turned out that I didn't. I'm working my way through the 4th planet, and I haven't been required to get the batteries. I thought that was actually an optional quest. May want to double check?

Nice writeup FTJ! Good point about the how it didn't feel Metroid to you. It felt very Metroid to me, but definitely WAY more actiony than previous Primes.

Yeah, you don't really get any new suits, and weapons are few and far between. The thing is, that's what I like about metroid! Getting new stuff. I mean it was cool that they let you keep everything in the beginning of the game, but that came at the cost of getting almost nothing over the course of it. That, and you use most of the stuff maybe 5 times, not counting trying to get (useless) missile expansions.

Like I said, it's still a very good game, but it lacks so much of what makes Metroid good that it's astounding we all still enjoyed it. Great control goes a long way, or so it seems.

About the collection quest: I didn't think they'd include one since the game was so streamlined to begin with, but it's there. Good thing is, you only need about 9 energy cells, and I found 13 of them accidentally. Worst comes to worst, you have to find 2 or 3, and they're in your logbook.

@ Agent MOO: Yeah, it might be worth a few minutes just to go back and check. i think if you have 4 or 5 batteries (which I had just accidentally without even looking for them) you can make it through if you're careful and don't go chasing after more missle expansions and what not.

I agree more or less with your impressions, story was pretty weak although I thought the atmosphere made up for it. really felt like these complete worlds (and i still love the scanning-for-background-story mechanic.) One thing that cannot be overemphasized (particularly since this is what the damn system is supposed to be about): the controls are really spectacular. Other than a slightly too slow turn around time the shooting is amazing, and the nunchuck controlled grappling beam is exactly the kind of stuff I imagined when the Wii was first announced.

Biggest disappointment ever. And yeah, most of the game just didn't feel up to snuff with the others in the Prime arc. Oh well, hopefully Metroid Dread will be better :P

Oh I don't know about it being biggest disappointment ever, have you not played twilight princess? *zing* Anyways, the game does have it's flaws and was a disappointment to some degree, but it wasn't that bad. Especially compared to most of the Wii line-up.

Damn. I'm a sucker for playing games in order and I just finished Prime a week ago (borrowing the series from a friend) so I've still got Echoes to get through. I'll probably be satisfied as long as I get to toast enemies with the plasma beam.

You know, I actually tried putting the firing button on the B button, but it tired out my finger too quickly. I'm sure this is why they assigned it the A button. The problem is, you can't hold in the button to fire the way you could if you were shooting, say, a machine gun. In games like those, assigning the B button to the firing button makes sense.
