SFIV Fight Pad Review
FitzLik3AlG0r3 | 2:51 PM on 02.16.2009 18 comments

Well, I stopped into my local Game Crazy today to pick up my long awaited Street Fighter IV Ken fight pad for the 360. Seeing as the game comes out tomorrow and it'll be nearly unplayable with the 360's d-pad I was extremely excited for it.

Took it home plugged it in and...... it doesn't fucking work. Leave it to Madcatz to claim they were changing their image as a company to one that makes "quality products." All it does when plugged into the USB ports on the front of my 360 is barely light up all four lights around the guide button and never registers as a controller. Half the reason i was looking forward to the game tomorrow was to experience the new Street Fighter with a decent d-pad so this is going to put a real damper on that.

My local Game Crazy just got enough for the pre-orders so even if I return it I'll just get the money back and no worthy controller, and if I send it in to Madcatz for repair or replacement it can take upwards of a month so I'm just all around bummed. Sorry to comepletely bitch about it, I really did want to do a solid review but alas I cannot.

The positives I can say about the controller is.... well it's very well designed, feels like the PS2 Street Fighter pads that were made. If only it worked so I could try it out and give you a good review.

If anyone has had some positive experiences let me know!

Your 360 is going to redring in a few minutes.

That fucking sucks.

I preordered the TE stick, and really want the pad too. With all of these complaints, seems like the new Madcatz = the old Madcatz.

Also, I now need new pants because of your blog header. It's that awesome!

Ha, thanks that's what I get stuck doing when all I have is paint.

I'm probably just going to return it tomorrow and force myself to play with the regular 360 d-pad until I know I can find a reliable means of playing fighters.

Ouch, that sucks. If you DO get a fully functioning one they are pretty nice. The dpad is much nicer of course, and I like the button layout.

I am really not looking forward to ponying up for a stick as I really want to enjoy this game, but hate the 360 pad.

How much is a cheap one?
FitzLik3AlG0r3's Destructoid Blog
$79.99 is the cheapest one of the Street Fighter sticks I think the Hori one is like $40 is you can still find them.

@FitzLik3AlG0r3,

I actually cancelled my Madcatz TE preorder, walked down the street to the local mom and pop game store and bought a Hori Real Arcade 360 Pro EX.

Sorry Madcatz, I don't have time for your crap!

Best Buy carries the fight pads also.

My local one had dozens of them (Ryu and Chun-li flavors).

@Casualweaponry,
I'd love to get that but I'm pretty strapped for cash.. that stick looks amazing though. When I get some more money I'll probably invest in that.

@Jamnontheone,
Cool, I may go there and check it out. I really wanted a Ken one but with the fact that it doesn't work I'm willing to get any character at this point.

If you cant move around with the d-pad, it could be that it need to be switched to act as the left analogue stick. there's a switch somewhere on the pad that does this I think.
FitzLik3AlG0r3's Destructoid Blog
@Remo,

Already toggled that switch, controller just doesn't read into the system. Nothing works including the d-pad.

I got mine last week (Ryu, go figure). I really love it. I'm sorry that yours isn't working. When you get a working one back, though, it will totally be worth it. I really just wanted a decent pad for my 360. But, I'm so sold on it that I can't wait until the PS3 versions hit the stores.

Not only that, but it's a dream for many XBLA titles. It's going to be well worth waiting a month, if need-be to get a working one. Or check out a Best Buy or two.

I hope it works out for you. I'm really sorry. That totally sucks.

Guess I'll whore out:

In the comments I have a video of a closeup on it and how it looks.

Also watch out for the cheaper Madcatz arcade stick (the 79.99) the joystick gets stuck because of a washer near the stick gets stuck in there which causes the stick to get stuck on a certain angle, I still can't believe that Capcom chose MadCatz of all companies.
garison's Destructoid Blog
That's depressing.

I just bought this flippin controller today and I'm not liking it. returning it tomorrow :( It's only saving grace is the d-pad! everything else feels so cheap...oh great now my X button is squeeking...mad cats wtf.
FitzLik3AlG0r3's Destructoid Blog
I actually got lucky and the Game Crazy I bought it from had an extra Ryu controller that works. Thank God. ha It's so much better then the 360's d-pad it's pretty heavenly. Now I've gotta get used to playing Street Fighter on a pad I can actually use. No idea why my other one didn't work though, sad I can't have my Ken one but a working one is just as awesome.
Shin Oni's Destructoid Blog
that's cool. though i still prefer arcade sticks over sega saturn style controllers.

and for that, I fucking enjoy my tournament edition stick.

 about me

First off, I don't really care about Al Gore. For some reason I misread something at work one time and thought it said "Fits like Al Gore" instead of "Fits like a glove." Dumb, I know.

I'm 20 and attending college. When not doing homework or watching movies, I'm probably playing some form of videogame.

Anyway I grew up with all the classic systems thanks to my brother being an avid gamer. From the original Pong only standalone to the Sega CD. Games like Snatcher and Street Fighter II remind me of my childhood. The first game I ever beat was the original Mario Bros. on the NES when I was 3 years old. Ever since then I've owned virtually every console that has come out and don't forsee myself ever growing tired of my hobby.

In my opinion the 360's achievements are one of the best innovations in gaming for a long while. It adds a lot more re-playability to games then there ever was before. Gives you something to strive for. Thankfully, my days of gamerscore whoring it up with awful games are over with. I just can't sit through another bad kids movie game for easy points.

Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PSP Slim.
