Hmmmm...I only remember towards the end where the waves bothered me but by then I was kinda done with the game in general. I was ok with the enemies and I played on regular. Different strokes though. Maybe the inevitable third game will address some of the issues a lot of people had with the game.
Oooohhhhh! I'm rather glad I skipped DA2 then! I loved Dragon Age Origins, but I have NEVER been a fan of constantly respawning enemies (or waves). I too like tactics and I don't want to feel like I'm playing nazi zombies in COD.
Let me just say this, but... Fuck Dragon Age. As a series. None of the installments so far have impressed me. Dragon Age: Origins felt incredibly generic and was, for the most part, well-below what I expect out of a Bioware game. Awakening upped things a bit, but had its own deficiencies.
Dragon Age 2 sucked. I liked the story. Had no problems with it whatsoever. I liked the characters, and personally speaking I love the fact they've decided to experiment with making all-inclusive love interests, but every Dragon Age game is a god-damned step backwards in gameplay instead of forward.
Unless Dragon Age III is truly impressive, and I mean fixes all the damned flaws and I don't hear a negative word about it, I won't be picking it up. I've played through Mass Effect 2 at least eight times now. It's been a fantastic value.
Yet I can't work up the willpower to give Dragon Age 2 a single, second chance. It's not the writing and characters, which are the same charming, loveable standard that Bioware always achieves. Simply put, the gameplay is utter shit. I've seen better from budget titles, and I refuse to waste my time with gameplay that sub-par.

@Occams electric toothbrush:
I'm near the end, and the neverending waves of enemies have just now really become an issue for me, because BioWare ramps up the difficulty on all encunters. Which would be just fine, except the waves of enemies make every encounter feel so damn boring that I kind of don't care anymore. And I can tolerate a LOT of issues like that with a game; I played through every sidequest in the first Mass Effect, and even went so far as to find almost every single mineral deposit, despite the fact that that was boring as shit. I even enjoyed finding the mineral deposits! So I have a high tolerance for stuff like this. The difference here is that it's just nakedly an attempt to ramp up the difficulty without having to, you know, actually do anything remotely creative. They throw more dudes at you because they seemingly couldn't be bothered to actually make the dudes in the first wave at all cunning or powerful. It's pure padding for the sake of it, and it honestly feels like they're just trying to artificially extend the runtime of the game so "hardcore" jerks can't say it's too short for sixty dollars. If that's the case, shame on BioWare for listening to those people. They'll never be happy, as their reaction to DA2 proves.
@Elsa:
I would actually recommend DA2, though with reservations. It's a failure in a few respects, but it's generally quite good. It's better than Origins and Awakening in a lot of ways, and I think I've enjoyed myself slightly more overall. The only issue that's so major it actually hurts my moment-to-moment enjoyment of the game is the one discussed in my post.
Then again, though I loved Origins, I had a LOT of issues with it, some of which might have been things you really dug about it, so you might wanna take my opinion of DA2 with a grain of salt. I will say that DA2 feels somehow like a lesser work than Origins overall, but it's also probably a better game. If you're wondering how it can be both at the same time, well, you got me. :)
