I Suck at Games: They Makes Me Sick
Faith | 10:11 AM on 08.09.2009 14 comments

It’s one thing to suck at games just because you suck, but in my defence I suck at certain games because they make me sick. Allow me to explain: I’m sure everyone has heard of motion sickness or car sickness where a person will be sick to their stomach due to unseen motion. Well I get something called simulator sickness which comes from playing first person shooters or games like Oblivion or Fallout 3
.
Simulator sickness is the reverse of motion sickness where the brain sees movement on the screen in front of it but realizes the body isn’t actually moving, so in turn the brain assumes what the eyes are seeing is false and the body must be poisoned and hallucinating. To protect itself, the brain will make the body sick in order to vomit and eject the poison. Not a pretty picture, but that’s how science explains it.

As a gamer, this protection system blows because generally I only get about an hour sometimes before my body will become sick and try to eject the suppose poison causing me to hallucinate the world of Fallout 3 which doesn’t give me enough time to built up my character and explore the world. This sickness is even worse when it comes to FPS games because the movements are even faster and so my time is always guaranteed short with these games. I’ve always been a bad shot in FPS games and with my practice sessions constantly being called on a count of Ralph, I’ll never get better either.

Also, imagine having to explain to a bunch of online buddies why you suddenly have to bolt mid-game to go toss your cookies. That’s real cool. I use to play Call of Duty 2 with some friends and I actually had to do that once. Thankfully they understood but I was still embarrassed.

I haven’t always had this problem with simulator sickness though. It only started when games went fully 3D. I remember the first game that set me off was Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and it took me being sick twice while playing it before I realised that I could keep playing for hours on end. It was a horrible feeling especially when you know how awesome that game is.

There are ways you can counter act the sickness like taking motion sickness pills or moving your TV further back but I have a tiny living room and I can’t afford pills for every gaming session, so I just play my games in moderation to avoid staining the carpet.

Happily there are still lots of games I can play that don’t get me all pukey that I can spend hours and hours playing and kick people butts at, but sadly, deep down in my heart I know that I will never be a professional FPS gamer and that hurts me. Well, okay maybe not but it would be nice to even just beat my boyfriend at Call of Duty: World at War.

My Pokemons - Let me Show Them to You
Faith | 12:06 PM on 08.05.2009 16 comments

I am so out of the loop when it comes to Pokemon types. I never realized the pokedex went from 151 to over 300 of these little critters. Geez. Yesterday I was trying to make more pieces for my upcoming meeting to sell pieces to the local videogame store and I needed to find pokemon that were small and didn't have a lot of black in them. (I was down to my last few blacks pieces)

I found some but I don't even know what I made. I know I made Psyduck, Marill, Pikachu and Jigglypuff - but the other two. No clue.

I also made Simon Belmont from Castlevania, two Dig Dug characters, and a new Pac-Man frame that will fit a normal size photo for once.

I plan to post these in my own store before the end of the week, but as usual, I just need some opinions on what people think. I like Simon but I'm afraid his a bit unstable to sell now. The Dig Dug guys are so cool but maybe a bit too old for people to remember and do the Pokemon actually look like Pokemon?

Questions, comment and criticisms excepted.

New Ventures & New Bead Pieces: Opinions Needed
Faith | 10:09 AM on 08.03.2009 13 comments

So there's a local videogame store in St. Catharines, Entertainment Overload that's open to selling my crafts on consignment which is great for me cause it opens up a whole new market for me. There will hopefully be more impulse buyers and retro fans coming into the store there that go ga-ga for my affordable, retro items.

This weekend I did up a whole bunch of stuff for this new venture and I need some opinions on my new items.

All of these will be magnets set except with Link with the shield which is a bag tag.

I want to make a few more items before Friday when I go over to talk about selling these but I need to wait for my black beads to come in before I can make some of the SNES items I want.

What does everyone think of these items so far though? Is there any other games that I should consider selling that would do really well? I plan to sell some of my mario mushroom keychains as well as some Link to the Past, FFVI and Chronotrigger magnets but I'm open to other ideas as well.

Videogame Shopping as a Proud Aunt - Also New Bead Art
Faith | 1:22 PM on 07.21.2009 9 comments

Today I went shopping for my nephew's 4th birthday and I finally got to shop in the one place I've been waiting for - the videogame store. I headed over to the local videogame store - Entertainment Overload and jumped into the hordes of Nintendo DS and GBA games looking for the perfect gift for a budding gamer.

I was originally hoping to pick up Super Mario Bros. 3 on the GBA for him but it was gone, so instead I picked up Super Mario Advance which is a remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Mario Bros. Plus I grabbed him Pixar's Cars on Nintendo DS cause I didn't spend as much as I originally planned to on the SMB3.

On top of the games, I also ordered a t-shirt from Jinx.com that has the title, Padawan Gamer and a Space Invader logo on it. Time to start dressing the kid like a gamer too.

Today am I a proud Aunt to know my little nephew is growing up to be a gamer already. I even taught him to spell Mario with his fridge magnets. He loves Mario and plays various Mario games on his Gamecube and Nintendo DS all the time. I am so excited to introduce him to Super Mario Bros. 2.

I have to make him a Thomas the Tank Engine cake topper too. Making it out of my fused beads, so I had to track down some game sprites for Thomas.

Speaking of bead sprites, here are a few of my newest pieces:

The Mario Generation - painting set - $40 plus shipping - available at Pixelated Creations

Guybrush Threepwood - new pose for customer

LeChuck - new pose for customer

Meet 8-Bit Keyboard Cat: the Bead Art Version
Faith | 6:28 PM on 07.15.2009 18 comments

My friend, Doctor Octoroc got together with his friend, Jude Buffum and they created an 8-bit keyboard cat video complete with a Mario epic fail intro. My boyfriend who loves keyboard cat had a birthday today, so I decided to bead that 8-bit version of keyboard cat for him as a present.

The final version came out much bigger than I figured so instead of becoming a cubicle decoration, keyboard cat will be framed and hung in my house. Now I will always have someone to play me off.

SCUMM Bars, Freelance Police, Purple Tentacles and Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon!
Faith | 10:26 AM on 07.07.2009 15 comments

With LucasArts' announcement yesterday and the launch of Ep.1 of Tales of Monkey Island, I figured it was a good time to roll out my SCUMM Sets again in my store and throw in a new piece, the Purple Tentacle from Day of the Tentacle.

I also plan to make some pieces from the original Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion when I get 5 secs. to breathe as I just got my shipment of beads in today and have a couple of orders to catch up on.

But check out my SCUMM set which include Sam & Max, and Guybrush & LeChuck from MI 2, both sets go for $25.

Purple Tentacle is $10. All pieces are huge, almost a foot tall each. They can be art pieces for framing or magnets for the fridge.

I can also create different poses for these upon request. Or do other characters like Guybrush and Elaine for example. Sky's the limit, people! Challenge me!

Also I'd like to introduce you to my newest custom piece, my Patapon. I plan to make a whole army of these and then sell them as a set.

You can check out everything in my store, Pixelated Creations.

Oh and check out my review of Tales of Monkey Island - Ep.1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal here.
