If Ron was banned for the reason I've heard from inside sources, which I will not repeat because I know he didn't want any of this publicized really, I don't think it was right.
Both him and Niero speak so well of each other and how much respect they have for one another and how they are still old friends, well saying is only part of it. Ron's done a ton for Destructoid and continues to, even in his absence or affiliation with Dtoid.
I do believe trolls who are overtly racist, sexist and just all around griefers should be banned but this should be the community's job to self-police and alert the forum mods. Niero's Destructoid is just a front. What we do with it with the tools we're given and the feedback we can give to improve the experience overall is largely up to us.
I'd love to see the staff get more involved with the Community again though. A few Dtoiders have chosen to "leave" Destructoid which is causing a lot of BAWW today among other members.
I havent spoken at ALL about this topic ANYWHERE yet, cause I'm just interested in seeing how its been playing out.But I just want to say a bit here.
Many people have been saying that Ron is the heart of Destructoid. I just want to say that I dont feel that is true AT ALL. I've never met Ron, and I've maybe seen him on stickam once. I've never been invited to the e-mailer (didnt know it existed till PAX), and thus have never even seen any interaction he's had with anyone outside of comments and c-blogs here and there. I know many people here went to Ron for questions and things, and that may be cool and part of why people believe he is central to the Dtoid experience, but I just want to say that it is TOTALLY POSSIBLE to have fallen in love with the site without ever dealing with Ron (in fact, even having a slight distaste for his humor and the way he carried himself the one time I saw him on stickam that)
Now just to put my stance in perspective, I've been in Dtoid since the Summa days, but only recently got more and more involved with the site, and it may actually be a result of the fact that Summa stopped being EIC (his COMPLETE Wii hate killed things for me) and the fact that things are changing around here. (Ron leaving, c-blogs, Tyra Tuesdays)
So, if you were to ask me personally, I'd say Dtoid is changing for the BETTER, and is not going downhill AT ALL. I love this community not because of who is writing news or features but precisely because I love the community itself. And even if Niero were to suddenly sellout this site cause he is tired of running it and wants to bank on his success and NOT break his back day in and out for us, I'll be here.
And just following up what NihonTiger says, I'm also trying to make the c-blogs (an idea I think was AMAZING) better by starting my own feature. And that's something I think Necros covered in his post, which is a VGR indeed.
I love you, Destructoid. IRCartel, Forums, C-bloggers, Editors, Podcasts, Features, and all.
On the forum thread about Heretic and Reaprar's bannings I saw Atheistium and Phoenix Blood lamenting the fact that new members aren't hazed like they were in the days before the site started to become successful. Is it just me that sees it as immensely sad that people are sad about bullies and trolls being banned and wish that new members were met with a flurry of abuse?
Oh, wait, fuck. This happened tonight, didn't it? Shit, I wanted to participate. Got to talking with the GF and didn't post. :(
Failcast is part of the problem. Just sayin'
