WHATS GOEN ON WITH ALL MEMES
I think we should all just read Necros's blog about his resolutions for everbody. DONE.
hounestly.
Also, bill pullman or bill paxton?
What about bill lambier?
What's poppin', Itemforty?
I'm really pissed about Workman getting banned. It just seems like a dick move seeing as he helped found the place. Reaprar didn't seem like he deserved the ban but I always thought his trolling was hilarious so I'm biased on that one. Heretic deserved it even though he is pretty cool in real life.
Farst comment.
When talking about constructive flaming, does "jeez your fucking suck ass blog about sucking ass and penis you should put more content you sucky sucker suck suck face" really flow better than maybe specifying what is specifically wrong with the "blog" in question and pointing it out? And if the recipient of said flaming comes back as a douche, does that warrant more flaming?
And seriously, can't ONE person comment ONCE about how bad an attempt it is so that failblogs don't get girl intro sized comment threads?
And why you so racist Necros?
@ Dexter345
I'm really happy everyone liked my blog. We had planned this show for a few days now, so we decided to still roll with it because I don't think I'm the final word on Destructoid. I'd really like to hear other people's ideas on how Dtoid is right now and what actions we could take.
Do you care that Kyosuke Nawhatsisface got banned? Because I sure as hell didn't.
Ron, though, I'm pretty bummed about.
I was kind of surprised with the banning of Reaprar. I know he was trollish, but seemed lovable. I didn't really interract enough with some of the others to feel like I really know what I'm talking about.
I think Necro's blog made some really great points that we should all take to heart. The fact that Tyra has taken over DToid today remind me why I love this site as more than another video game blog.
So to play Devil's Advocate I have to wonder though in light of Tyra Tuesday, and some of the most recent discussion, if a new member posted something like that they would most likely get flammed and be told they suck, but it's okay for editors and veteran members to post? I'm not saying that it's wrong (I added to the Tyra Love), but it got me thinking that there's a little bit of a double standard.
We say we want better quality, but we also take pride in this site being a little more edgy with less bullshit. So where is the fine line?
I've actually been anticipating this podcast for a while - Podtoid won't touch the subject.
Wait why couldn't Ron just post that picture himseOH OK.
But seriously, can someone please tell people that "cliques" within the community is not some horrible thing? The community itself is all 30,000 DToiders, we cannot get close in those kind of parameters, so we must make smaller groups, which are still welcoming and not exclusive. God some people are dumb.
I can understand some of the older community members wanting people to be less crappy and more awsome, but sitting around and bitching about it like a school girl on her period doesn't make anything better. It just discourages new blood, and makes old blood less interesting in sticking around.
Also, did any one catch of the epic HANDEGG games on tv this weekend?
I request word filters for soccer = football, and football = HANDEGG.
Why is there a mystical divide between the cblogs and the forums? I've always existed just fine in both. I understand that someone might prefer one over the other for various reasons, and that someone might only have time for one of the two or whatever, but why the stupid line in the sand? :/
Would MovieKick heal all wounds?
@The GHost
Maybe part of it is the front page linking issue. If there was an active threads block as visible as the cblogs I bet you the divide would melt away. Having a thread in Hamza's recaps are a start though.
i am not here to bitch about a community i love so much, but really recently the c-blogs have been really not worth reading.
i don't know why but there seems to be a wave of new person on the blogs, and the problem is that these people appears to come here and expect the blogs to be as meaningless as the IGN's, Gamespot's (Gamestop?) and Screwattack's ones.
Another problem appeared after the wave of Bans , people are affraid to flame the above-mentionned persons because they also fear to be banned. This leads the commenters to not flame the horribles bloggers, who then thinks that the way they blog is acceptable in this community.
I really don't think that my toughts turned out ot be understandable since i have a lot of problem turning my toughts into readable sentences.
Where should we be sticking on our computers if we want to join in?
I have to say Destructoid as a whole is unfortunately worse, the front page isn't as entertaining anymore and lacks the real personality posts used to have. This is a video game blog, not CNN.
Workman's banning was unwarranted and I'm really disappointed that such a thing happened but it's out of our control and we don't know the full story so I have no input. But if my impression of things is correct it was in very poor taste.
Reaprar and Heretic took things a bit too far, Heretic especially. Reaprar hadn't posted in awhile so I think a warning should have been sent to him at the least before the hammer was swung. Heretic was a an alright guy but flaunting in someone's face that they won't be banned is pretty lame.
There's more on my mind but then I'd be writing an editorial. I KNOW these things happen because of Ad support and such but I was asked if the community got worse and I honestly say yes it has. It actually pains me to say it but some things need to get out there
THE FAILCAST ARE GO
Although I'm glad to see bans used I'm a bit ambivalent towards in how they enacted. Admittedly I have no behind the scenes knowledge whatsoever, but it seems like they were more "life time achievement ban" than for a specific instance. Bans are usually viewed as a punishment dealt after several warnings for specific instances of misconduct. Like I said, warnings could have been dispensed (I honestly have no clue what happened,) but it seems more like a new stricter policy taking out some past rapscallions, with little warning of such and there for no chance for repentance, and it's not really fair to go from lenient to authoritarian with no warning of a coming crackdown.
Also, is there any way you guys can do a general overview about what all the controversy is about? Persona 3 has been eating up all my time so I have been on the site to witness the drama unfold.
One last thing, I just read your comment Bullet Train, and you really shouldn't have called people new and old blood after a period metaphor XD
If you could hug anyone in the world, naked, who would it be?
i would hug Niero.
Can you please discuss banning that dolphin-loving freak Chad Concelmo?!
Yeah, that guy should be banned for loving dolphins too much, i bet that if he had a chance to hug one he would hug it to DEATH
also @Chad - have you used your present to see the dolphins?
See you there
:]
I for one would like to hear someone bitch about Tyra Banks.
:)
@Itemforty - We should fear Tyra Banks. Her giant forehead of death is destined to destroy the world!
HOW COULD YOU BAN PICKLES!!!*
*don't be over analytical. pickles are just awesome and tasty.
@scary womanizing pig mask:
Ugh. I didn't even realize I wrote it that way. I fail at life :( hahah
One of you must have seen the comment Heretic made that got him banned. You must share.
I wish Ron was back. That is all.
I'm curious as to why all of the sudden everybody thinks they're going to get banned just because a few well known and self-appointed trolls were. The best I can come up with from reading the various responses on the matter is that people are afraid they'll suddenly wake up one morning and be banned from Destructoid without any prior notice. Do you guys honestly believe that? That CTZ or Niero or any of the other editors are going to straight out ban you without any warning? I would hope everybody, especially the old timers, know the editors better than that. If you are acting too dickish or way out of line I'm sure you'd get a few warning from the editors (and probably other community members as well) telling you to cool down first before even a temp ban is issued. I agree that banning Reaprar, Heratic, and the other "trolls" without giving them a chance to make amends seems a little backwards and harsh from my perspective. I seriously doubt anybody else aside from that small group is in any danger of a permanent ban. To clear up any misunderstandings, I'm not referring to Ron as being a part of group. That's an issue I don't feel is my place to discuss since I've never met Niero or Ron personally.
*that group
what was the comment that got heretic banned?
Spartacus: I don't think anyone got it screencapped or anything, I asked in IRC the day of and no one had capped it :(
I don't agree with the banning of Reaprar. I Didn't realize he was that bad, I actually kind of liked him. Heretic, on the other hand, was just ridiculous. I read Niero's comment, and I was listening to the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack when I did, and it made it that much more intimidating when I got to the part that was more intense.
I dunno about Ron getting banned. There must be some private stuff between him and Niero or something, because I didn't really see that coming. It's a shame, but... It's Niero's site. Piss him off (Like Heretic, directly, for everyone to see) and he'll ban ya. Not to make him seem like a power-hungry jerk, which he isn't(AT ALL), this is the first time someone's been banned in, hell, 6 months? That's just the way things are.
Can't wait for this episode :D
@MEE,
Not yet. I am waiting (very impatiently) for it to get warmer. I AM SO EXCITED! :D
I'm pretty much said everything I need to on the forums and emailer. I'm glad it got people's attention and hope it'll lead to a better direction for the site. The whole thing with Ron still stings though.
I don't really want to get in anyone's face about such a sensitive topic, but I do feel like Ron was the heart of Destructoid. Before his banishment, when he left Dtoid, things went downhill. He was the glue that kept us all together and really was the go-to guy if you had any questions or problems. He still is that to a lot of us, despite leaving officially.
I second a lot of what Necros mentioned in his earlier post. The writing needs to go back to what it used to be: campy, humorous and witty. I miss my captain obvious and Bargain Bin Ladens of the world. Please come back!
From a personal perspective, I don't want to sound too harsh, but I just kind of got sick of waiting around for supposed "projects" in the works with Dtoid. I'm not going to mention any names, but certain people over the last year and a half have strung me along with the possibilities of cool game ideas or artistic projects that mostly don't end up being made at all. I just got sick of being promised this falsely and just happen. Some people just blow a shit load of steam at Dtoid without any follow through. Frankly, my time and talents are not worth such disrespect. After these incidents it became hard for me to respect Dtoid as much or take it very seriously. (Not that I would ever use "serious" to describe such a silly and awesome place).
From a community standpoint, Dtoid is still very cliquish I suppose, but I don't think anyone is super "elite" or feels they are better than everyone else. The pace of the writing has gotten far too quick and tabloidish, reporting on the most minuscule bits like "ooooh a new song for Lips, let's write a whole piece just on that which nobody cares about!". I liked it back in the day where there was a steady flow of news, but at least I could keep up with it all. The humour is also lacking, no more funny-as-shit features or silly memes being created (lack of Workmengs).
That's some of my feelings on the issue, I took some of what I said from my ramblings in the emailer, sorry if you read it a second time.
The weird thing is, I never saw a comment by Reaprar or Heretic that would offend anyone enough to get banned. I read almost every front page post and most cblogs, and have no idea why people hated them.
Nanbu, though, deserved to be IP banned from the internet.
I feel like I'm disrespecting the dead...
I think the cblog downfall is simple to explain, a bunch of the ones that used to write a lot are now writing mainly somewhere else, moved to the front page or got caught up IRL and no one has taken their place.
As for what Naia said, yes, if Aerox hadn't done the Tyra post and Dtoider35000 did it I bet it wouldn't have been accepted as well, but I see this as normal, one obviously is more willing to accept something from someone they know that from someone they just met.
Also, I think it's mostly bs all the talk about "I'm afraid of getting banned" because of last week's bans, I mean sure, they might consider the risk of getting banned now, but that wasn't the reason why they stopped posting or didn't post/comment as often as they did before last week.
Last, has anyone consider that the community has become an alive sentient being? By this I mean that if the site crashed one day and stayed offline for a week, the emailer, vent, IRC, steam and all those other places would still hold a good part of the community together.
Directive?
WAAAAALLLLL-EEEEE
did i miss something or is that one girl on house a lesbian?
I havent been around that long, but to me Reaprar didnt seem too bad, sure he was a troll, but his comments never went too far over the line, and sometimes he hit a funny bone or two.
Heretic was shit, and he deserves the ban.
I agree with DJDuffy that we need to get feature articles back in the community. I for one enjoyed reading the Bargain Bin Laden and wish they would return.
Another thing though is that, maybe our meme blogs get a little out of hand. If anyone posted anything serious today it was instantly buried under all the Tyra stuff that went on. Its fun sure, but if we demand new content and good blogs then maybe we should cut back on our meme blogs, or just comment on the first one and leave it at that.
Much like the economy, Destructoid is in a funk. It is not the end of the world, and things are rough right now. Hell, 1Up just got bought by UGO today and is being violently dismembered bit by bit as we speak.
That being said, the only bailout we're getting is to make this place better with our own hands. We must produce better blogs all around. We must make better forum posts. We must make FNF what it once was by bringing together everybody, by changing up what games we play, and by making it engaging again. We can do all of this and more if we put forth the effort. I know we have it in us, Dtoid community. And I will do everything in my power to make things happen, but I can't do this alone. I need everyone's help. We need everyone's help.
On my end, my features are coming back. All of them. I have a ton of stuff lined up, and I don't care how long it takes to get them written, but I want my features back. And if Bargain Bin Laden doesn't come back to the front page, I'll probably end up picking that up as a C-Blog feature because, frankly, I bargain bin dive a lot and find a ton of great stuff. A lot of crap, yes, but great stuff, too.
That, however, really highlights the best way to get the blogs and everything else back in order: write about what you love, community. You like shmups? OK, make a blog post on it and go from there. That's how half of my features started out. I'm sure you'll find some great ways to write up your favorite things if you try.
I see much promise in Destructoid. It's all about achieving it. And I believe in you guys.
ON another note lets not forget who made the FailCast Banner... Reaprar
Serious question time:
Do you think there is anyway for Dtoid to regain its former glory, and do you think site badges and groups are going to do anything? To me, it seems like the devoted community members already have their unofficial groups, and this seems like a penance of too little, too late.
Stupid question time:
How long until we see a cheesy VH1 biopic about the ridiculously fast rise and slower descent of Dtoid? Please cast the film as well.
I hate to say this, but Ron is lucky he wasn't banned sooner. OTOH, he didn't do anything recently to warrant it.
I also have a problem how the banning of Ron, Heretic, and Reprar are getting balled into the same problem with DToid changing. They are TWO DIFFERENT TOPICS and should be discussed as such.
I'm not an active contributor of this community, but for the past two years I've been loving the news articles and the relationship between the editors and readers. I think that banning people for serious offenses is important. If a community does not have rules which are enforced, it becomes chaos. 4chan is chaos. I hate 4chan. I may be alone in hating 4chan, but why does there need to be both 4chan and destructoid-pseudo-4chan? Banning members of this community helps the community to retain it's individuality and appeal.
Also, maybe some members need to stop making lots and lots of drama and like... play some games? That's what this site is about right?
I be back people! But it sucks that when I come back there is drama, which sucks.
