Damn it Sakurai!! *spoilers for cave-dwellers*
F Whipple | 10:22 AM on 03.18.2008 6 comments

Although the Smash bros dojo is out of style now, I still find myself going back there everyday just to see what's there. Today, of course, is the great king of evil Ganondorf. Now aside from this sick shot of him choke-slamming Link, today's update irked me.

The biggest problem I had with Brawl's roster was that Ganandorf was still a clone of Falcon. Yeah he was more distinct this time, but the potential for his own moveset was enormous. As such today's update also goes into details of one of Ganondorf's taunts. The infamous sword taunt.

When I saw this I was really interested in what Sakurai was going to say (unless the translator did this on his own, which is possible).

"He takes out the sword he stole from the six Sages and takes a look at it.

... Then puts it away.

What are you putting it away for? Use it! People tend to make fun of Ganondorf for this.

Argh!!! Why! It's like he acknowledges the fact that nobody wanted him to be a clone anymore. Yet he did it anyway. And then he throws that taunt in there to piss us off. What a jerk.

/end rant

Either way Brawl is awesome and I've spent too much time on it already.

Force Unleashed for the Wii
F Whipple | 8:01 PM on 01.25.2008 6 comments

There's no doubt that The Force Unleashed is a highly anticipated game. Not only is it a Star Wars game but we finally get to be evil. With the focus on force powers combined with new technologies and we'll finally get to experience being the force-powered juggernaut that we've all dreamt of being. Obviously, the PS3 and 360 versions are the most talked about as they have the most power under the hood. Having neither of those however, I've been extremely curious about the Wii version.

I've felt that if done right it could be one of the most important games on the Wii. Ever since the Wii was announced I've dreamt of a 1:1 sword-fighting game, especially with lightsabers. Unfortunately though, it's obvious that the "next-gen" systems are the primary ones for this game. As the Wii version is being developed with the PS2 and PSP versions.

Earlier today IGN posted a preview of the Wii version. Some of the important points are:

-wiimote is used for the lightsaber and the nunchuck for force powers

-five different gestures will be used for each of the controls (so much for 1:1)

-While it doesn't have the new technologies a physics engine is being made for the Wii version. IGN reports that "While not on the same level as the X360 and PS3 versions, the Wii physics are still impressive."

-Some good news: even though in this earlier stage, the wii version runs more smoothly than it's more powerful brethren

-Two player duel mode (Nice!!) with 30 playable characters. Doesn't seem to be online

-Summer release date

While it seems 1:1 will not be happening with this game I am still excited. I didn't expect the duel mode and I hope that it's not some tacked on garbage. And while the hardware isn't as strong perhaps the motion controls will provide a different sense of being an all-powerful being of destruction. At worst this game will be a Jedi Knight clone with broken controls, but at best it could be one of the most immersive games on the Wii. Either way I'll probably get as I'm a huge Star Wars nerd.

Thoughts?

OMG! WOLF LINK IS IN BRAWL-or so I dreamt
F Whipple | 1:04 PM on 12.29.2007 11 comments

So I had this odd dream where I was playing brawl and wolf link happened to be one of the characters. At least I think it was wolf link except his special moves had nothing to do with the games. Being one of the few dreams I actually remember vividly and having to do with video games I thought I'd share. I remember wolf link being fast. Which makes since as he's a wolf.

standard B: charge shot a la samus. Except while charging, the growing ball of energy can block other projectiles. Neat!

< B >: wolf link lunges forward traveling in an arc and jumping over projectiles

down B: Now this one made no since whatsoever. Link hunkers down and starts shaking as if he's taking his first crap after being constipated for a few weeks. Then energy balls start shooting out of his back

^ B: Another completely ridiculous one. Some force draws in link's enemies close enough so Link can bite them followed by a great leap as if he bit his tongue. I have no idea how this would translate for use in midair.

There was also a plethora of fire emblem characters in the game. I believe I've played it way too much these past couple days.

ESPN on video games
F Whipple | 7:06 PM on 10.08.2007 3 comments

I read an interesting article from ESPN on none other than professional gaming in the world of Halo (of course). That's right, ESPN talked about video games. It goes on and talks about how 1337 they are with their all-day practice sessions, junk food diet, and how they have coaches and groupies. It also notes how they became bored with the single player after about 10 minutes.

I read and couldn't decide whether or not I was jealous of them. Sure they play video games for a living, get paid exhorbitant amounts of money for what I pay to do, and have groupies, but it seems like they don't actually enjoy the games. Seems like such a loss....ah what the hell of course I'm jealous of them.

Finally...A Wii lightsaber game
F Whipple | 1:55 PM on 09.18.2007 7 comments

Apparently the game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is now coming to the Wii. The wiimote will be used for the lightsaber of course while the nunchuck will be used for force powers. All I can say is HELL YES!!

Ever since the announcement of the Wii one of the first games everyone wanted to see was a lightsaber game. Hopefully the fine folks at Lucasarts can pull this off.
