About Me

Hey robots, I'm Excremento, but you cool and old skool Dtoiders know that already, this is merely for the N00BS. I've been a videogamer for as long as I can remember. I have well over 27 years of video game experience that I rely on daily, and a near encyclopedic memory of gaming starting with the Commodore 64 and ending with whatever is the current hotness.

I've got my own blog at MediaWhoreNetwork that I try to write on when I'm not too busy...and just recently have decided to come back to do a few Community Blogs here on Dtoid now that most failbloggers don't exist anymore. I'm still here fellas (and ladies) updating as often as I can for all of your enjoyment.

Any of you out there who wish to chat it up with ol Ex can do so at:

Songs That SHOULD Be In Guitar Hero/Rock Band -- Volume III
Excremento | 8:40 PM on 11.01.2007 10 comments

I love Guitar Hero, and I'm bound to love Rock Band. I just have one problem, I was brought up with a vast knowledge of music and appreciation for all types of music. Unfortunately for people like me, most rhythm games fail to include some of my favorite songs and or bands.

While I find it very cool that the game designers for both game series are trying to be all-inclusive and bring elements from modern music and music from the past together in one game, they sometimes fall flat on their face trying to meet my expectations and the expectations of people like me.

I know that I am not the only audiophile in the vast sea of Destructiod readers. There will no doubt be those of you who agree with the songs I post here, and a great deal more of you who won't agree or have never heard the songs I list. Let's get started shall we?

Alice In Chains -- Nutshell

Probably one of the saddest songs on the album, Jar of Flies, still hearkens me back to the grand 'ol days of Grunge Rock. I'm not sure about you, but I was more depressed about Layne Staley's passing more than Kurt Cobain. I think that Alice in Chains was one of the best bands to come from the grunge movment. Maybe this song is a bit too depressing for a Guitar simulation game...

Filter -- Hey Man Nice Shot

The first track on Short Bus is worth having in the game purely for the bass intro. This song rocked so fucking hard when it came out. The group would then go on to create a few other albums, but none as heavy as their first.

X-Cops -- Barbells

What do you do when you have to have an opening band but nobody is available to tour with you? You make an alter ego band to open for you, that's precisely what GWAR did when they created the X-Cops. Their first and only album, You Have The Right To Remain Silent, starts hard and ends just as tough as it came in. Covering the gamut of GWAR topics, police brutality, rape, sodomy, crystal meth, bondage, rape, and an awesome cover of Deep Purple's "Highway Star", and a little more rape added in, the band dressed up in cop uniforms while thrashing the stage with their unique metal sound.

God Forbid -- Article I: The Twilight of Civilization, Section I: The End Of The World

I found out about this group through the webcomic Questionable Content. The band was touted by the author of said site to be pretty damn good, and for an indie rock webcomic, I have to take his word for it. The album, IV: Constitution of Treason, tells a foreboding story of a new world order being established in the not too distant future (read that as now). The intro has a lilting couple of notes being played with the galloping of the guitar being slowly faded in, then just hits the ground running when the drums and bass kick in. Give this album a sincere listen.

The Mars Volta -- Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)

I honestly don't have enough time to explain how deep all of the Mars Volta's music is, their debut album Deloused in the Comatorium was a triumphant return for the members of At The Drive-In who had taken a hiatus. A great album, from a great group whose lyrics are nearly as cryptic as those from Coheed & Cambria. The guitar work throughout the album is nothing short of spectacular and this song is a real treat among the others.

I know, I know, I probably didn't include the group/song that you think would be great, but give me some time, this is just the beginning of a series of many blog posts I'll be continuing to post about songs I'd love to see in Guitar Hero / Rock Band. Who knows, maybe next time, your favorite song will be here. Thanks for reading.

Nutshell is great, especially on Unplugged, but Sickman would be a better song for a Guitar Simulator.

Mmm, too many Mars Volta so little time, L'via L'viaquez.

@ Simmons 2pt0

I agree, there are TOO many good Mars Volta songs to have to just single out one song from their whole catalogue. I could honestly put all three albums on repeat and just let it play on and on. I really hope that Rock Band gets more artists than what they already have planned.

Great list in any case, God Forbid would be ridiculous.

Cut that City by the the Mars Volta would be a good GH song, provided they cut out the first 2 minutes of ambient noise.

@ Orcist

Thats the only thing about TMV, they have a ton of ambient noise going on. I would have put Amputecture on the list but there's too many slow parts that would kill the mood of the game.

Roulette dares! I normally dislike the mars volta(love at the drive in though), but that song and a lot of that album is really good.
I have tons of songs id love to see on gh/rockband, but the one that really stands out is slither by velvet revolver. Great guitar the whole way through.

I love playing "Hey Man Nice Shot" on the (real) guitar. It's one of the 1st songs I learned. Yes, yes, and triple yes.

I haven't ever listened to Mars Volta but I've been told that I would love them by several people. I don't know...

Spoonman by Soundgarden. FTW
