I fear the new generation of gamers. It may seem silly, but I feel that we are approaching an interesting crossroads in the culture of video games. On one road you have the older generation like me who have been actively gaming since the Atari and classic PC days, and on the other you have the current generation of gamers who never got into anything older than the original PlayStation. Luckily, there are a myriad of individuals who are enthralled by all that is retro. That is not to say that ‘retro = good’ because we all know that there were far more bad games in the past than there were good. I can literally think of hundreds of games that should never, ever be remade or played by anyone. It’s inevitable though, every generation of console generally has 10% quality games, 50% average games, and 40% crap. You know what? I blame this on each and every one of you (that’s including myself). If you want to find out why and what you can do to fix the problem, keep reading. Blame for the declining amount of fresh content in games can be laid on both the older gamer and the younger gamer, but I honestly think that more blame should be put on the elder gamers like me. Why (you might ask) should we be blamed for the crap that is out right now? It’s simple, because we old-school gamers are elitist pricks when it comes to game content. If it isn’t familiar then it isn’t any good. I know that games that buck the trend are hot right now, but it is also a trend that the same stagnant game ideas that are constantly being rehashed with better graphics are generally the best sellers of any generation. If you need an example, look at the amount of FPS games out there. We tend as a social group to shun all that is new because change is scary. In the case of sharing titles that were great in our times with the younger crowd many of us fail miserably. It is common place for us to laugh at someone who has never played games that we hold sacred, such as Mega Man 2, but it really isn’t their fault unless we as a group take the initiative and teach our gaming inductees some history.
Now for you nuevo gamers that started in the game much later than old bastards like me, it’s your turn. I know many of you want to be in the loop about games and their history and there are a multitude of resources out there for you to use. The best resources are scattered all over the internet on websites like MobyGames , or Wikipedia. Also, I’ve heard many a young gamer say that they are “a hardcore gamer”, yet they haven’t played Game X or Game Y for one reason or another. The main problems being that they thought that either the graphics didn’t look great or that they weren’t aware of its existence. Here’s the thing, those are just excuses. We true gamers know that graphics take a backseat to gameplay every time and that ignorance is never an option. To help remedy these problems, there are a three simple things that we can all do to make the gaming community more cohesive, though I’m sure most of you will disagree with at least one of them.
First and foremost is DON’T BE A DICK. Complete anonymity and the internet go hand in hand and it rarely does anyone any good to be rude. Just realize that people have differing opinions about everything and try to argue your points as best as you can and remember that you will most likely NOT convince someone. Second, give every game an honest attempt before forming your opinions. There is nothing sadder for me than to hear someone say that they’re not going to try a game at all based on someone else’s opinions. There was a time that I thought Pokemon could never be a good game, yet I was proven wrong on every occasion! Finally, realize games are just games. Some are made with you in mind, while a whole mess of other games aren’t even made for your demographic. There is no one person who likes every single game out there. I’m even guilty of it myself when it comes to sports games. I can’t stand them, but I know there are people who do so I wouldn’t be right to comment on them. If everyone followed these simple rules, we would all be better off, there would be much more cohesiveness in the community, and we would see an eventual rise of a gaming utopia. There’s no reason that both groups, young and old can’t benefit from each other. The young can benefit from the experience the old have to offer, and the old can benefit from the imagination of the youth. I hope that this little post can bring a little knowledge and a little acceptance to our fractured community. Now go outside and and give someone a hug! [Via MEGATONik]

Part of the problem with getting the newer/younger gamers to play the old games is that they have been spoiled on the graphics. When we played games, graphics were very simple compared to the games of today, yet we were blown away by them because we had seen nothing like this ever. Young gamers started on the PS1 or PS2(in some cases) so going back and playing some SNES or, God forbid, NES games is like a torture session to them. Without the bump-mapping and pixel-shading etc, young gamers aren't interested. "What? This game is in 2D? Lame." Older gamers appreciate visuals and are more forgiving of them than the newer gamers, because we remember the 16-bit sprites of SNES days. But, older gamers also demand better content in their games than the younger generation. We grew up in the "Golden Days" of the game not for the visuals, but for the content.
Now please remember, I'm making sweeping statements, but I'm talking about groups of gamers as a whole. I know there are always exceptions to the rule so don't jump on my case about that.
I already have a plan laid out for educating my offspring when and if that ever happens
Agreed, everything you said there should be amended into my blog post.
@ Lukich
Me too brother, me too. They don't get to touch a current gen system until they beat all of my NES games and my SNES games. Since they won't know any better, they'll think that its the greatest!
That's a good idea, until Excremento Jr. goes to Billy's house and sees his Virtual Xbox and plays it. Then your plan is knocked to hell.
I think my kid is going to be like me...friendless
Yeah I am starting to feel more and more like a crotchety old man everyday...I didn't expect everyone to like this. Oh well it was an editorial I wrote elsewhere that I wanted to share.
You just made my day. Except that I'd be like old man Herbert. Creepy keeps kids away more than yelling. "I got some popsicles in my basement. You want some popsicles? Mmmm popsicles."
Only thing better is the blowing on cartridge and double cartridge-ing the NES to make it work only to have it glitch right in the middle of the game. I've paid my dues bitches, gimme good games!
The Ultimate History of Video Games. It's actually really, really good. It has alot of quotes, alot of sources.
Now.
It really makes me wonder how many people here have actually played Karnov.
You can't call yourself a SquareSoft fan if you haven't at least heard of it or played it.
Excremento if you haven't played it, I suggest you download the ROM and translation cause it's the only way to play it.
In fact, I'm gonna go find it today I think.
I played it for a bit but there's something really wrong with playing SNES games on a computer using a keyboard...
It does feel weird at first, but how I have my keys set up. I have my movement keys on "WASD" and my button keys on the arrow keys. Which makes things easier if you set it up right.
Sadly, I never played Karnov. But I'm at least working on my retro deficiencies. :)
What is it and what's it for?
Also, you have a PS3 right? You can use the controller on your computer I believe. It would work well for Mana 3
I think it might have something to do with the transition from 2D to 3D that has ruined the so called "charm" of classic games. When you make a game that is primarily fun the graphics can suffer and it will survive, but if you make a great looking game with ok gameplay, it won't last. At least thats my opinion.
@ EDS
Karnov was technically the mascot for the DataEast company, and is probably one of the first side scrolling action platformer I played (besides Black Tiger, Rastan, and Rygar in the arcade) on my NES.
Nowadays though being hardcore seems to be more geared towards people who play FPS's and care more about how a game looks rather than the content or how well it plays. I am definitely one of the old school gamers who doesn't mind playing something because it's fun as opposed to how realistic the sweat on a manboob looks.
We play our 20 plus year old NES way more than any of our current 'gens.
Though, I'd like to point out that I've been playing since the Atari 2600 days and I think games on a whole have only gotten better since then!
It's just the younger whiper-snappers don't appreciate it.
To that, I must say: submit your evidence. Otherwise, it's only your opinion.
That guy always reminded me of The Iron Sheik, you know, the pro wrestler.
I see what you're gettin' at though Ex, and I know what you mean. Us older gamers can be real assholes sometimes when the young'ens don't know what Bionic Commando is.
Maybe you should start a history blog, you know, games the new generation should thank for the games they have now or something like that.
Then we could have PSA's like "Karnov was really fucking hard and the main character was a bald dude that shot fireballs."
Then have 'The More You Know' on the screen at the end.
Also I started playing around the SNES days. Played Nintendo at my friends house then got a Super Nintendo.
